Finding Our Roots With Genetic Testing

Researcher: James David Love

I am a descendant of Harry Francis Love b: 1901 (my grandfather). Our family descends from James Love b: 1799 in Ireland.

Now, I guess I should backtrack a bit and explain why I am involved (main proponent) in the testing of 4 individuals. I suspect that our James Love had 4 other brothers:

  1. Samuel Love b. abt 1797
  2. Alexander Love b. abt 1800
  3. Thomas Love b. abt 1810
  4. John Love b. abt 1818

A book published around 1904 in Picton On., Canada titled ‘Pioneer Life in the Bay of Quinte’ states the following regarding the Love family:

This family has been closely identified with the life and interests of South Marysburg ever since its pioneer, Samuel Love, emigrated from Ireland. He was born in 1797, and in 1825, being desirous of a kindlier fortune in life and in search of a new home, he left his beloved country with the ebb and flow of that tide of Irish emigrants who, in the early years of the last century, turned their thoughts towards the Western world.

A man of fine physique, and blessed with the shrewdness and pertinacity which are characteristic traits of the North of Ireland men, Samuel Love had not been in Canada long before he made his way to Prince Edward County. Ever mindful of the essential needs, and like a good pioneer, he soon had his log cabin built on the property now owned by George A. Welbanks in South Marysburg.

William, Thomas and John, sons of the pioneer, sought their fortunes in California, going by way of Cape Horn. With the exception of one visit he paid to the old homestead in 1887, William spent his life in California. Thomas spent his time between the home of his birth and the land of his adoption, and undertook the journey eight times in all; and John died in Oregon. Thomas Love, notwithstanding all his travels and the many adventures incidental to the time and country, never tasted intoxicating liquor or used tobacco in any form.

The records of the Love family show that four brothers of the pioneer left about the same time as he did for Canada, to wit: John, James, Thomas and Alex. Belle, the daughter of Thomas, was adopted by Samuel Love, the pioneer, and subsequently married Hiram Seeds.

I suspect the other 3 testing candidates that I am involved with are descendants of Samuel, Alexander and Thomas Love and are linked to the above mentioned publication. All of these brothers settled Hastings and Prince Edward counties of Ontario (near Belleville On.), Canada circa 1825 to 1850. Tying the five males together either here or back in Ireland is proving to be a HUGE problem.

The main objective here is to determine/confirm that all of these testing candidates are from a common ancestor – so we are linking the correct families. We feel that this step is important because we want to further our research in Ireland. The work in Ireland is tedious and quite expensive so we want to make sure we have all of our facts together before we pursue Ireland further. If we can confirm the association of these test candidates, then we really have all of the descendants history and need to work exclusively on the Irish connection.

Now, further to this, I suspect that the Love’s we descend from in Ireland were originally from Scotland. I would be interested in corresponding with other members of the Love surname project once we get our test results back – perhaps there are some matches to our group???

We expect to have our test results about 15 May 2009.

I would be most interested in learning about the other Love’s in this group. To contact me by email Click Here.
