Finding Our Roots With Genetic Testing

Researcher: Terijo Love

There were two John Loves living in what is now Ashe County, NC prior to 1820. One could sign his name, the other could not. The other has a good deal of research on his descent. The one who could write his name should have written it more often, he has been hard to track down. He married someone and fathered at least one child, our William Love b. NC 1776. I believe this because there is some mention of William LOVE, son of John LOVE who married Patience Perry, daughter of John Perry in this area at the right time. There is some reason to suspect he came down from Love's Run Maryland with a group of immigrants who came at about the same time he showed up. As far as I know none of these Loves has been tested.

William Love, b. 1776 NC. He married Patience Perry, daughter to John Perry, in the area which is now Ashe County, NC. We know this only because they are named in this John Perry's will and did in fact relocate from Grayson County, VA to live on this bequest of land he left them at that time. Their children were Lydia (m. Bluford Hawkins of Grayson County, VA), Mille (m. George Ellers, Grayson County, VA, did live some in Ashe County, NC.), and Alecy (m. widower John Phelps and relocated with him & his children to Laurel County, KY. And the baby Caleb Love b. 1818 VA.

Caleb Love, b. 1818 VA. m. Jane Eldredge, probably of Grayson County, VA. They had several children. They started out in VA, raised all but John Thomas to adulthood in KY then, with him, came 'home' to Ashe County, NC. Probably inherited land there. William's last place of residence was with daughter Alecy Love Phelps in Laurel County, NC, aged 74. (Says 72 on the census but it's wrong!) Other children were Byron or Bryan, Stephen, William, Alcy, John Thomas Love , b. 1854 KY being the baby.

John Thomas b. 1854 KY m. Mary Ham Wagoner, a widow 20 years older than himself. They had two children, only, Wagoner Columbus Love b. 1873, NC and Virginia C. Love, b. 1875. John Thomas raised at least Columbus aka CW aka WC aka LUM to adulthood before he went back to Laurel County and married a childhood sweetheart and had several other children, namely one George LOVE and at least two or three daughters with one Miranda .... Miranda was clearly of Indian descent and he told his children (who told theirs...) that his own grandmother was Indian, too. This would likely have been Patience Perry but not necessarily. Or he could have been making up stories for his kids. At least two of the wives in this era had Indian blood of one kind or another.

Wagoner Columbus Love b. 1873, NC m. Rebecca Ham of Ashe County, NC. They raised their kids there. Harley, Pearl, Mary, Lee (died young), Rosnetta and Treely Vester aka Lester b. 1899. He actually did marry a second time with at least one child. One Sibbie Wyatt, of Ashe County (think), they had one son Walter and the whole group is found in Washington County, VA in a single census.

Treely Vester (aka Lester) Love b. 1899, NC m. Emma Ortiz Blevins and promptly moved with her to Raleigh County, WV to work in a coal mine. They had four daughters and one son, several still living.

The son married my husband's mother and they had three sons, one being Michael Ray LOVE.

Thus far we have had a single LOVE DNA match - finally!!!!! - however it looks like the connection is back in 'the old country' and not in this one. Still, something to look forward to tracking down!
