Finding Our Roots With Genetic Testing

Researcher: Fred Love

I'm descended from James Love (1764 - 1833) He was living in Campbell County Georgia at the time of his death. At the beginning of 1932, Campbell County became part of Fulton County, to save money during the Great Depression.

Some descendants in this line think that James was born is Edgefield County, South Carolina. This is an assumption based on a census that records a James Love Household with the number of family members with the age to match our James Love family.

Fact is, we do not know where our James was born. My research leads me to believe that he was born in either Burnswick County, Virginia or Cabarrus County, North Carolina. Some things to consider:

  • My Family Tree DNA Test Result is only one marker distance from four members of the Love Surname Group 1 that are descended from James Love Jr. that married Mary Ingram. James Jr. was born about 1745 in Brunswick County, Virginia and died 1821 in Cabarrus County, North Carolina. James and Mary were married about 1765 in Brunswick County, Virginia.

  • There are land records in North Carolina that appear to be our James Love.

  • Ingram Love is the first son named in the will of Our James Love. In 1860 Ingram was living in Sweetwater, Monroe County, Tennessee. The census shows his age as 68 and that he was born in North Carolina. This would mean that he was born in 1792. Ingram married Nancy Sentell and information from the Sentell family is that he was born 7 Jan 1792 in North Carolina.

  • James Love named Stephen James as the Executor of his Estate. Stephen James was born in Craven, North Carolina in 1785. In 1820 Stephen James and James Love were living in Walton County, Georgia. Stephen James died in Cobb County, Georgia which is next to Campbell County where James Love died.

  • Why did James Love choose Stephen James as executor of his estate? I believe it was because of a family relation. His 2nd wife was Elizabeth. Stephen James was married to Mary Mills and Mary's sister was Lydia Mills Magouirk married to Seth Magouirk. I believe Elizabeth was a sister to Seth. Hence, the reason David Magouirk and Lodwick Rollins (he was married to Rachel Magouirk) were chosen to be guardians for Josiah Perry Love and Joseph Crawford Love in Meriwether County. See Court Record in next paragraph.

Children of James and Elizabeth Love.

  1. Josiah Perre Love
  2. Joseph Crafford Love

The 1830 census shows 1 male under 10 and 1 male under 5. This indicates that both sons were born in Georgia, either Walton or Campbell County.

The spelling Perre and Crafford reflects the hand written Will of James Love.
