James Madison Hinkle Sr. was born January 4, 1831 in Buncombe County, {now Raleigh} North Carolina. Died July 20, 1909 at home on Piney Grove Road, Whitley County,Kentucky. Laid to rest at The Piney Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Whitley county, Kentucky.

On June 26, 1850 in Knox County,Kentucky James married Delia "Dilley" Davis daughter of Job Broughton Davis & Unknown (1st wife). Delia was born May 24, 1833 in Cherokee Indiana Reservation in Buncombe County, {now Raleigh} North Carolina. Died April 7, 1888 at home on Piney Grove Road, Whitley County,Kentucky, Delia contacted a disease.

James served in the The Civil War Co.E 32 Kentucky Vol. Infantry Regiment December 24, 1862 to August 12, 1863. Pvt. James Madison Sr. Hinkle was a musician and played the flute while serving in the Army. James and his 2nd wife Mary "Polly" Taylor Hinkle donated some of their land, for the "Piney Grove Baptist Church Cemetery" and as of November 25, 2004 Church services & Cemetery burial still in process.

Pvt. James Madsion Sr. Hinkle's parent was William Hinkle & Susannah Treadway,& Grandson of Michael Hinkle Jr. & Nancy Haggins, GG Grandson of Michael Hinkle Sr. Hinkle & Rebecca "Sprugin" Hinkle & 3rd Great Grandson of Anthony Jacob Hinkle & Anna Maragret Whitthaus and 4th Grandson of Rev. Anthony Jacob Hinkle & Marie Elizabeth Dentzer
