General Maxwell Thurman: Maxwell Thurman, 64, had been diagnosed with leukemia in 1990. Dubbed "Mad Max" and "Maxatollah" by colleagues for his aggressive style, Maxwell Thurman delayed his retirement at the request of the Bush administration so he could spearhead the effort to oust Gen. Manuel Noriega's regime. Gen. John Shalikashvili, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, called Thurman "a remarkable soldier" who loved the Army. "He was a visionary who carved out a path for the Army of today and, by doing so, showed us courage, talent, intelligence and strength of character," Shalikashvili said. Maxwell Thurman was named commander of the U.S. Southern Command, based at Quarry Heights, Panama, in September 1989. Responsible for U.S. forces in South and Central America, Thurman pledged at the time to confront "tyranny in all its insidious forms." He was widely credited with persuading the Pentagon leadership and the Bush administration to use military force against Noriega's regime. Thurman retired in February 1991 after a 37-year career. He had learned he had an aggressive form of leukemia in July 1990. The general made his reputation as an aggressive, take-charge commander -- a man known, in the words of one officer, for "driving his staff crazy because he was a bachelor and the guy never went home." Born Feb. 18, 1931, in High Point, N.C., he was a graduate of North Carolina State University in Raleigh, where he enrolled in ROTC and got his officer's commission. Thurman held a variety of staff and command positions in Europe and the United States, and served in Vietnam, first as a corps intelligence adviser and later as commander of the 2nd Battalion, 35th Field Artillery, during the Tet offensive. That 1968 battle was considered a public disaster for the United States but a tactical victory in the field for U.S. forces. He held numerous key Army posts, including vice chief of staff and commanding general of the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command at Fort Monroe, Va., before taking the top spot at Southern Command. Maxwell Thurman headed the Army's Recruiting Command at Fort Sheridan, Ill., where he worked to develop the service's "Be all that you can be" campaign. It was during these years, in the mid-1980s that Thurman is credited with vastly improving the quality of the average soldier. Under Thurman's guidance, according to an Army release, "the modern professional Army we now possess came into existence." Maxwell Thurman is survived by his brother, retired Army Lt. Gen. John R. Thurman III of Alexandria, Va. He is to be buried Thursday at Arlington National Cemetery.

Samuel Otha Thurmond
The Crittenden Press, Marion, Ky, issue dated 20 Jul 1905:
It has pleased God in his goodness and mercy to remove from the sinfulness of this world another of our loved ones to that Beautiful City, and we have but to say "one the less on earth but one more in heaven."
Last winter Mr. Sam Thurman's health faded him and he decided to go to California in hope's of regaining his health. On the 6th of march he and family left for Pemonia. How wonderful is the wave of Providence! While there he became very low and seemed to fight back against death. When conscience, he asked to be taken back to his own home so that friends and relatives could visit his grave. His loving Father gave him the desire of his heart. He recuperated, came back, stood the trip finely, seemed cheerful and hopeful the day he arrived at Repton, which was the 9th of June. In about two weeks, the 24th, death claimed him as its own. He seemed so glad to get among old friends again and when he was again slowly sinking he said to his wife, "Carrie, I am glad I have got you and the children back among your people. I care not to die but I hate to leave you and the children." Funeral service was conducted by Rev. N. J. Fox, at Repton church, where he was married to Miss Carrie Fritts, Dec. 14, 1894. At 3 o'clock Sunday, June 25th, his remains were interred at Repton graveyard. It being "Children's Day", a very large assembly awaited the funeral procession. It was his fortune to have as many people to pay the last tribute of respect as is ever witnessed in the county. He leaves a wife and five little children, two sisters, two brothers, and a host of relatives and friends to mourn their loss. But our loss is his gain. His sisters, Mesdames Mag Nations, and Leila McColums, were with him in his last hours. His brother John was also at his funeral but his brother Will, who lives in Louisiana, arrived too late. Dear wife, this is the sorest affliction you have ever had to undergo, but remember God hath said in His blessed Word, "I will be a husband unto the widow and a father to the orphan." May you take comfort and courage, your undertaking to fill a father's and mother's place is great, but your heavenly Father is also great - trust Him. To all the bereaved ones we extend our heartfelt sympathy, and may we all so live that we too can say, "I care not to die". Belle Fritts.
Glen's notes: This is Samuel Otha Thurmond, son of William Richard Thurmond and grandson of James Phillip Thurmond and great-grandson of Bennett Thurmond. Even though the obit spells his name "Thurman" his descendants use the Thurmond spelling. The Pemonia location in CA is actually Pomona, which is adjacent to where Samuel's uncle, Ervin E Thurmond, had relocated.
