Surveyed by Howard
Lehman
(Exact date unknown,
sometime late 1970s)
Howard Lehman and
his mother, Sallie Stoner, have been added to this survey
Howard Lehman was
born William Howard Lehman on Sept 1, 1910 in Lafayette, Mississippi. He
tragically lost his life in October of 1993 during a burglary at his home in
Parkin.
The following
information was supplied by Mary Nell Burnett:
Howards mother
was Sallie Orr French. His maternal grandparents William and Frances French. Howards
father worked on the Mississippi River and drowned in a boating accident when
Howard was about 6 years old. After his fathers death, his mother moved to
Parkin where she met and married Frank Stoner on July 20, 1919. Their marriage
is recorded in the Cross County marriage record book N, pg.28.
Frank Stoner
raised both Howard and his brother Hugh, as if they were his own sons. Frank
died on October 4, 1933, and his wife, Sallie French Stoner, never remarried.
She died August 1987 and was buried alongside her husband in Stoner Cemetery.
Frank Stoner's
parents were, Dr. John Stoner and Kate Louisa Huxtable
Stoner. Frank's half-brother was Robley D. Stoner,
who was the great grandfather of Mary Nell Burnett. They are all buried in the
Stoner Cemetery. Dr. John Stoner along with his second wife's family, the Huxtable's, arrived in Cross County in January of 1871.
They had moved from Minonk, Woodford County, Illinois. John Stoner was
born in Franklin Co., Pennsylvania and the Huxtable
family was from England and Canada.
Howard Lehman
never married or had any children of his own. Although he is no longer with us,
his memory will live on through his dedication in preserving the history of the
cemeteries in and around the Parkin area.
