1728 Caroline County formed from Essex, King William, King & Queen. St. Margaret's Parish in Caroline County.

Source "Colonial Caroline"
The chief merchant in Caroline with whom they did business was George Tilley, who prior to the first entry in the oldest Order Book, had set up a wharf and warehouse on the south side of the Rappahannock at a site near Conway's warehouse, marked on old maps as Heard's or Hoard's landing. Tilley not only supplied the larger planters but also retail stores scattered through the county; THOMAS MAULDIN and Samuel Garlick at Chesterfield, Benjamin Rennolds and Samuel Coleman at the Court House, Charles Dick in upper St. Margaret's Parish, Josiah Baker near Conway's warehouse and Humphrey Bell's outlet in lower Drysdale.

Richard Mauldin was a St Margaret's Parish merchant. Evidence points to location of his business establishment at Chesterfield. It is recorded that Richard Mauldin was in partnership with Thomas Mallory. The above listing possibly shows that Richard Mauldin was actually Thomas Richard Mauldin

1731 Caroline County VA -"Colonial Caroline" In 1731, the traders at Chesterfield, who suffered from loss of trade due to the fact that since the organization of Caroline the planters of St. Margaret's no longer traveled the Ridge Road to reach the courthouse at King William, petioned the magistrates to authorize the construction of a rolling road leading from Chesterfield to the Rappahannock, in hopes of bringing back traffic and reviving their businesses. when the planters of mid-Drysdale joined in this request the only practical Tidewater terminus of the route became Roy's warehouse. Francis Conway and his relatives on the court, opposed this road but since some of the most powerful men in the country, Walter Chiles, Thomas Carr, Thomas Mauldin, and Robert Woolfolk, who were already magistrates, and Robert Parish, Robert Fleming, George Hoomes and John Baylor, who were to become magistrates, lived on or close by the proposed route, they were unable to halt construction.
Richard Mauldin and Francis Conway derived the major portion of their income sources other than agriculture.
