With the gracious help of Mic Andrus of the USA, who contacted me just after I had begun sorting things out , and with the generous aid of Mary E. Mayo , Attorney at Law at the firm Mayo and Mayo, California, I have been able to bring this branch of my mother`s wonderful Laing family up to date as of the last day of December 2010 (my Aunt Jessie Laing Smith bless her soul would have been very pleased with all that has now been completed)

CEMETERY INFORMATION says age 41. HEADSTONE has Mason marker. OBITUARY Iron River Reporter March 11 1930 "E. Leslie Laing Laid To Rest By Masonic Order" Funeral services under the auspices of the Knights Templars, were held yesterday at 2 p.m. from the home of E. Leslie Laing, 40, president of the First National bank of Iron River, and widely known consulting engineer. William Olin, of Iron Mountain, was in charge of the Masonic rites and the Rev. N.U. McConaughy, of Iron Mountain, formerly pastor of the Christ Presbyterian church, of Stambaugh, read the sermon. Burial was in the Stambaugh cemetery. A large crowd of friends gathered to pay their last respects. The First National bank of Iron River, of which Mr. Laing was president, was closed all of yesterday afternoon, while the Miner's State bank closed during the hours of the services. Pallbearers were Russell Wortley, of Wakefield, Orr Hamilton, of Duluth, Stephen Quayle, Bjarne Knudsen, Frank Smith, and O.G. Groeschel. Mr. Hamilton was formerly a partner of Mr. Laing's when he first established offices in Iron River. BORN IN GLADSTONE Edmund Leslie Laing was born in Gladstone, Mich., May 27, 1889 and there completed his early education. He enrolled in the Michigan College of Mines and Technology at Houghton, and after two years spent there came to Iron River, where he worked under G.L. Woodworth, of the Monroe Mining company. Later he returned to Houghton and there completed his course, securing a degree in mining engineering and surveying in 1911. Upon his graduation he came to Iron River and became associated with O. Ross Hamilton, consulting engineer. A short time later Mr. Hamilton became affiliated with the Oliver Mining company and Mr. Laing took over the office alone. October 8, 1912, he married Miss Helen Moriette, of Milwaukee. ADVISER At the time of his death Mr. Laing acted as adviser and engineer for many fee owners, including the late W.H. Selden, Sr., and the late N.E. Fisher, former president of the First National bank here. It is probable that Mr. Laing knew more about the mineral and mining possibilities of this district than any other man. During recent years he had played an important part in iron ore explorations and had held the confidence of many of the officials of large mining companies, frequently being called into consultation by them. Last year he made a brief survey for gold and silver in Ontario, Canada, being engaged by a group of Marquette and Cleveland financiers. Mr. Laing was elected president of the First National bank here shortly after the death of N.E. Fisher last November and a month ago was re-elected. He was the second president of the institution to die within the last four months. Mr. Laing was also president of the Commercial club of Stambaugh, having been elected to that post in December. He was a member of the Lake Superior Mining institute, the American Institute of Mining Engineers, the Knights Templars, and the Marquette shrine. SURVIVORS Mr. Laing is survived by his widow, Helen, and three children, Kent, a student at the Shattuck Military academy in Minnesota, and Jean Helen and Ned at home, his mother, Mrs. H.B. Laing, and a sister Miss Hazel Laing, both of Gladstone. Out of town persons who attended the funeral yesterday were O. Ross Hamilton, of Duluth, M.J. Murphy, Ely, Minn., G.H. Good, Duluth, John J. Gleason, St. Paul, Mr. and Mrs. John Erickson, Escanaba, Mr. and Mrs. N.J. LaPine, Mr. and Mrs. F. Miller, E.J. Noveans, Edward Jurnstrum, all of Gladstone, C.J. Stakel and E.R. Laing and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Lindsey of Escanaba, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Laing, of Iron Mountain, Dr. Grant Laing, Chicago, James D. Laing, Ely, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. H.B. Knowlton, of Milwaukee, and Mrs. E. Moriette, of Milwaukee. 1913 IRON RIVER CITY DIRECTORY says wife Helen, mining engineer, resided S Carnegie Avenue, business address 113 W Genesee. OBITUARY of Helen Laing 1968 says she married E. Leslie on Oct 12 1912 and they lived in Iron River from then until 1930, when Mr. Laing died.
