John Martin was involved with the surgar refining industry in Greenock, associated with the firm Hoyle, Martin & Co.. He became involved in municipale affairs which lead to being elected as Provost of Greeock in 1852. His election was protested by another candidate and resulted in a chalege before the courts. After several court presantations he was affirmed as Provost , holding this position until his death.
