Hawley Family

The
HAWLEY
family of
Clarenceville, Quebec

The Hawley family is well know in the Clarenceville area, as the most prominent Loyalist family to arrive during the American Revolution. The first family arrived with the Roger's Rangers militia group. They established themselves on land in what was called Caldwell's Manor at that time (1774). Presently there is an American Family group that has managed to trace this line back to Joseph Hawley, of Parwich, Derbyshire England. This page however is designed to take the Hawley from the point that is common to Clarenceville and in relation to the Macfie family and proceed from there.

From this particular Hawley line we can trace the connection to the Macfie family of Clarenceville, for whom this web page was constructed.

The Macfie's are not the only Clarenceville family to intermarry with the Hawley and it would not be altogether inaccurate to state that at least 85% of the families originating from the Clarenceville area have Hawley blood lines. Today however there are no Hawley's left in this area, most of them returned to the United States to seek their future and few have ever returned other than to do genealogy work. Many of the Hawley males went to western Canada, where land was being offered by the gouvernment The Hawley Home was sold to outsiders after the death of the last Hawley, Clarence who died in 1985. The Hawley cemetery, which is located on a piece of farm land adjacent to the Hawley Home on South Beech Ridge, and became the resting place for the family and many of their neighbors.

As to the Macfie, well two of Alexander Macfie's children married thier counter parts from the Hawley family . The eldest son Robert married Sarah Eliza Hawley, and his eldest sister married Herman Allen Hawley. Through this Hawley line the Macfie family has the privilege of being able to claim United Empire Loyalist connections, and proudly display U.E.L. after their family name.

As the children of these families grew up, we find that many of the Hawley moved as did the Macfie into the same areas of both developing countries ( Canada & the USA) where they worked together in many concerns. William Alexander Hawley was a mining supervisor in Grass Valley where John Macfie his uncle was located, and Eugene Creller also. Marshall Peter Hawley moved out west to Assiniboia with Claude Robert Macfie where they continued to farm.

For a more complete viewing of the Hawley family itself we suggest that you take the time to review their home page

THE LATE GEORGE C HAWLEY

The death of George C  Hawley which occurred at his homes at Lamont Iowa on Tuesday morning March 3rd 1910 removes another of the sturdy pioneers and breaks another link in the chain of earthly ties forged by the men who made the prairies of Iowa blossom as the rose and reared homes on the frontier. The death of this exemplary citizen was as peaceful as his life which crowns his years with the sunset that casts its golden tints over his pathway. His monument has  been reared in the hearts of those who knew him and have learned to love his honest and noble purposes his unerring loyalty as a citizen and his Christian manhood. His life has been devoted to home and its environments which is greater than kingly possessions.

George Cook Hawley was born April 25 1826 near Clarenceville Qc just across the line of the United States. when a young man he came to Kane County Ill near St. Charles in the year 1850 he was one of a party from that vicinity to cross the plains in search of gold . Wm. Smith of Manchester  was one of the same party. The return trip was made by steamer to the Isthmus of Panama which they crossed on Mules and from there by steamer to New York making one of the remarkable voyages at that time in ocean travel. In 1854 he came to Iowa and entered 200 acres of what is still the Hawley farm, receiving the patent from the gouvernment. To this he added 240 acres where he made a home. February 6 1855 he married Amelia Lake of Kane County Ill

Six children were born three of whom died in early years. The three living are Frank  Hawley of this city C C Hawley of Cape Girardeau Mo. and Mrs. Frank Vanderhoof of Wasco Ill  These were all present at his death. Mr. Hawley was a member of the Free Baptist Church while the organization was at Campton With his wife he retired from the active duties of farm life the spring of 1900 and moved to Lamont where the family have since resided.

The funeral was held Saturday at 10:30 o'clock from the M E Church services being conducted by Rev C H True of Edge wood who paid a fitting tribute to his old friend and to the memory of a noble citizen The burial was in the family lot in Oak Hill Cemetery.

THE LATE GEORGE HAWLEY

George Hawley son of the late Peter Hawley and  brother of Mr. Stoddard Hawley and Mrs. Robert Macfie died on March 3 1910 in Lamont Iowa after only one week's illness of paralysis in his 84th year. Mr. Hawley was born in the Parish of Clarenceville near Nutt's corners and his many friends join his family in mourning for one so highly esteemed both at home and abroad.

Notes taken from  undated newspaper article glued into Wessy Macfie's scrap book

Mr Smith was born and reared on a farm in Mississquoi  County Quebec. Leaving home at the age of 21, he was engaged for several years in the hardware and cycle business in Toronto. Returning to Quebec, he was appointed assistant manager of the Montreal branch of the Frost & Wood Co., a position which he occupied until 1904. In that year he resigned and assumed the management in the Province of Quebec of the  Wm. Gray, Sons Co., the well-known vehicle concern. When in 1910 , that company amalgamated with the Manson  Campbell Co, under the name of Wm Gray, Sos- Campbell, Mr. Smith continued as manager of the Montreal branch of the new organization, the business in Qebec easily keeping pace with the rapid growth of the parent house and factories at Chatham Ont..

In February of this year Mr Smith resigned at Montreal and was appointed General Manager of Gray-Campbell Limited, with headquarters in Moose Jaw. This origanization is one of the largest carriage distributors in the West, javing branches at Winnipeg, Brandon, Saskatoon, Edmonton and Calgary. Mr Smith is also sales manager of the Gray Dort Motors Ltd, fo Saskatchewan and Alberta, this automobile concern being a subsidiary ofthe Gray campbell organization. He has been for some years interested in the development of Western  Canada, being a member of an eastern syndicate that owns a large tract of land in Alberta.

Essentially a lover of farming, Mr Smith at present operates a farm and ranch in the Vermilion district. In a recent interview, he voiced his enthusiam over the future of the Canadian West  ' Bussiness promises to be good for our company during 1916 '
said he. ' All signs indicate that the slight shaking down of the last two years has placed business in the West on a more substantial basis. We are now entering an era of prosperity that should satisfy even the unbounded optimism of the Westerner '
With his wide experience and maked executive ability , we are confident that Mr Smith will be a caluable adjunct to his company in his responsible position as Wester general manager.
