(1812-1899)
(1802-1900)

Robert, was born in Greenock, Scotland, second son of William and his first wife Jessie (Johnston). In typical Scottish fashion he was named Robert after his father's father, Robert of Langhouse, Inverkip. His older brother William having been named after his father himself.
Robert was born in to a well to do family of sugar refiners, who had successful sugar boiling operations in Greenock, and Leith producing for not only the local markets, but those in foreign lands , Russia, Sweden and Canada. The family operated a grocery business in Greenock and had investments in several other industrial undertakings such a coal, railways and sailing vessels.

Robert Macfie, was the first Macfie to seek a family Coat of Arms, and did on the twenteth day of November 1863, becoming recognized as Robert Macfie of Langhouse, Renfrewshire , Airds ,Oban and Glenshelleck , Argyllshire on the eighteenth day of November 1864.

While his grandfather Robert Macfie, was the first to have taken possession of the superiority of Langhouse, and William his father, was the one who castleized the original building , both gentlemen were known as Macfie of Langhouse, but this was not the official nor registered designation which is today as being the origins of the symbols used by Clan Macfie.
Only in 1864 did the symbols of the Macfie become recognized as official and this was a direct result of young Robert's desire to portray himself as part of the establishment of that time.

In 1867, following Robert Macfie of Langhouse, Airds , Oban and Glenshellack's notoriety, his cousin Robert Andrew Macfie, who had by then purchased the estate of Dreghorn, just out side of Leith, and who had become involved in politics, decided that he also should be possessed of a personal Coat of Arms. The arms of Macfie of Dreghorn, were then granted by the Court of the Lord Lyons of Scotland, based on the first recorded Macfie arms in Scotland ( those of Robert Macfie of Langhouse - 1864)

The original Macfie of Langhouse Arms , now belong to Robert James Macfie of Luton Park, England. he being a direct male descendant of Robert Macfie.
The orignial Macfie of Dreghorn Arms being now exthinguished, as there are no longer any male members of that family living, and none any of the male family members descended on the female line have attempted to transfer his arms to any of thier offspring.

The photo while showing a hand written note of 1800's whould have been taken in the later years of the century

Edith Jane Wood
1883-1913

Edith Jane was the youngest daughter of Edmund Wood, a Retailer of beer, and his wife Fanny, she was born in Sussex, East Grinstead England

Thomas Fairrie Macfie first came to Canada in 1902 , he had applied for a land grant, which the Government of Canada was offering free land to any perosn willing to come and establish a homestead in the western provinces. It appears that Thomas received land near the twon of Nokomis , located in northeren Saskatchewan.

1906 Saskatchewan census

Returning to England he married Eidth Wood and they both departed on May 28 1908 sailing to Montreal from liverpool on the SS Tunisian, and Allan Line vessel.

1911 Saskatchewan Census

Unfortunately Edith Jane died in 1913 and was buried in the Nokomis Cemetery

1916 Saskatchewan Census

Thomas Farrie Macfie enlisted in 1915, and was attached to the 10th Canadian Mounted Rifles, Regina Saskatchewan. For what every the reason the canadaian records indicate Thomas deserted, however it is believed , once his family in Scotland found out he had enrolled, they suggested he return to England and re-register in the Imperial forces where a commission of Leiutenat could be purchased for him. Thomas served his country with hounor, rising to the rank of Major before mustering out.

He returned to Canada, where while he has not been located on the census records, he has been located on the street directory of Saskatoon Sask. It has to be noted that his Canadain cousin Claud Robert Macfie was living on the same street at one time only a few houses in distance. Whether or not they knew of each other's existance or thier family connenction remains unknown.

Thomas left Canada some time after 1921 returning to his origins, where in 1926 he died while in Dumfries Scotland. His body was returned to Canada where he was interred along with his wife in the Nokomis Cemetery

Most of the information on Thomas was kindly provided to me by Soosi Monahan of British Columbia, without her kindness I would have had very little to write about Thomas, it is nice to know that there are people out there and outside the family realm who offer thier help freely, I for one am very greatfull.
