As the Marquis family is so intertiwned with the various relations of those families interconnected with the Macfie, it was decided that they deserved a page of thier own. Derek Marquis with whom I have corresponded over the years has provided the bulk of the information on this site. In 2001, he and his wife, had turned 81 , he wrote me indicating that he did not think he would be getting into the computer age any time soon , and while his children were well conversed in the matter of this electronic age, they were far too busy to be too interested in genealogy. So for Derek Marquis, and perhaps one day for his children, or his children's children this web page is dedicated to all Derek's hard work and love for his family and his interest in genealogy.

John Marquis (ii) 1805-1864
| Married October 6, 1840 South Leith, Scotland
| Robina Macfie 1814-1873
|
In May, of 1840, John Marquis of Greenock very correctly approached John Macfie to enquire if he might "pay his addresses " to Robina. He had been an admirer of her he said since 1834, and his sister subsequantly divulged the fact that two years previously he had named on of his ships after her. He was the only son of John Marquis, a shipmaster of Huguenot descent. He was well liked in the family, " a great crony of John Graham and was engaged with his partner James Denniston , in a grain and corn business in Greenock and Limerick. They were married on the 6 October , and after a short honeymoon spent partly in the Lake District, they returned to Greenock and settled down at Brookfield, "a very sweet place" with a cheeful view of the river and of the vessels moving to and fro.
In 1847 John Marquis experienced a particular commercial crisis, the grain business which he and his partner James Denniston ,carried on was largely an Irish one, and the state of Ireland was deplorable. At the end of August the y found themselves in difficulties. John Marquis on goin to Limerick found matter worse that he had anticipated, and failure seemed unavoidable. After long negotiations, however John arranged to carry on the business, promising to manage the mill in Ireland himself. He and his family there left Greenock at the end of the year of O'Brien's Bridge, castle Connell Joint sureties for the reconstructioon were John Macfie his father in law and James Fairrie , uncle of James Denniston.
By 1848 John and his family had settled confortably in Ireland, Robina wrote home stating that her house was cheerful and that Limerick was a bustling town with crowds of country folk, and " plenty of soldier marching with music" Her husband was looking forward to re establishing his business and was well satisfied with his prospect. However in June of the same year the mill had caught fire and had been burned down. This was a great disappointment to John. and he therefore decided to discontinue business in Ireland. He settled his affiars by the autumn and at the beginning of October his wife and children left for Liverpool, to take possession of at #30 Percy Street, which his mother in law Mrs John Macfie had made ready for them.
John Marquis himself remained in Ireland a week or two longer to make some final arrangements before joining his family. He seems to have made up his mind to give up the corn business, and at once set about enquiring for some new opening.which did not take too long to come about.
In January 1849, with the assistance of John Macfie ( his father in law) he arranged a partnership in a General brokers business with Archibald Baxter, and was soon doing well.
John Marquis and his family liked Liverpool, his boys were getting on famously at Mr Thomson's school. Once evening little John was sent out with a message and failed to reach his destination. The alarm was given, serach parties sallied forth, the police and the bell-man were informaed. An Advertisment was set for insertion in the Liverpool Times and actually appeared on the following morning. In the neamtime however, the child had been found, fast asleep on the sofa in the sitting room. - he had never gone out at all.

Derek provided information that linked the Scott family to the Galt family, his Scott relative's sister according to his searching would have married John Galt's brother James. However now that it easier to trace throught the IGI records via the internet system we find that Derek may have interpertered his information incorrectly. His Margaret Scott was born in 1762, James Galt, brother to John the Novelist was born in 1783, and died at the age of 15 in 1798 according to the IGI records.
It is possible however that the Marquis, through the Scott may be indeed related to the novelist John Galt , not through a borther to John, but through an Uncle, brother to John's father John senior the dates would support this idea of a match rather than a match to a young lad born in 1783.

Another possibility is that the families are related through the Thomson relation, as John Galt married in Irvine, which itself is not that far from Glasgow. I shall leave this puzzle to the Marquis family. They can always claim a relationship to John Galt through the Macfie line if they desire.
In the book by H B Timothy " The Galts" He has written in reference to the Galt family as a whole " James Galt, sith, was made a burgess that same year (1667), and it would seem, was appointed by the town council to " dress the town knock" ( clock) in the befry beneath the Tolbooth steeple, and each day except sunday to ring the bell in the morning, when the ports or town gates were opened, and at curfew, according to ancient custom. There is alos mention of the sub leasing to James Galt sometime after 1645 of the Howe or Holme or Hair Mill ( one of the burgh mils for grinding corn or other grain) and of a John Galt, merchant and a William Galt Skipper in 1732, while from 1743-1745 a Jame Galt was apparently burgh mason, for his name occurs in connection with the prcuring of building material for work done on the prison, the bell house and the school."
In further notes from Derck Marquis (2003) it appears that when old Mrs Galt died some part of James Galt's property was to come to Mrs R. A. Macfie ( Agnes Galt sister to John Galt the Novelist) this mention of property is found in notes of William Macfie dated Sept 25th 1854, and again a few days later when William goes on to write " I am glad to say with a little management between our friends, Mrs Macfie and Mr Marquis all matters are now settled with regard to the succession of Mrs Galt's ( Jean Scott ???? ) property and all are quite amicably. Mrs Macfie ( Agnes Galt ) is to get one half of all that was left at the time of her Uncle's death in 1830, of which one half goes to her brother John 's children. Mr Marquis ( John Marquis) and sisters get the other half and also some sums of Mrs Galt's own. It will be very soon settled."
In verifying the IGI records following receipt of Dereck's latest letter (Nov 27 2003) it was noted that an additional girl Jean (Oct 3rd 1760) is shown as being born into this Scott family. Futher searching shows that a James Galt married a Jean Scott Oct 24 1801 in Greenock. This may be the connection to the Galt relation that Marquis requires. Unfortunately no James shows up listed as brother to John Galt (Nov 1750) who was the father of John Galt the Novelist ( brother to Mrs R A Macfie) but since the records of the times may not have been exact, we could rightly assume this is the correct route to look at in determining the Marquis- Galt connection.
