William Macfie

William Macfie was born in the house on New Street, Greenock, that was located in the back of the Great Tennament built by William Alexander. He was only 7 years old when his father Robert bought a building on the opposite side (1783), the west side of the newly named William Street and opened up a grocery store in the lower (street level) portion of the building establishing McFie & Co. at Civic numer 15 William St.
William would have been apprenticed by then as he would certainly have been of age , after which he may have become involved in his father's own grocery business. At the age of 26 William and his father had begun a new enterprise , that of sugar refining , establishing thier business on Bogle Street, Greenock, which became the strucural spinal core of the family's affairs until the location was finlally liquidated in 1856.
Unfortunately, due to a lack of records, we are unable to determine when Willam moved from the building on Wiliam St, however we must assume he did so either just before his marriage to Jessie Johnston, or the newlyweds moved into thier own home at the time of thier marriage. The earliest record is the 1815 Greenock postal directory which places him at number 2 Regent St, which is almost midway between the Sugar refactory, and the Grocer location no doubt allowing him to have a hand in the daily operations of both.

William Johnstone Macfie, had been sent to the West Indies, in 1830 for sake of his health, apparently without benefit. When he embarked on the ' West Indian ' on his homeward voyage he was so ill that it was not expected he would live to see England. He in fact died at sea on the 30 of May 1831, near Plymouth and his body was landed at that port. He was buried in Plymouth., he was 22 years old. A tablet to his memory was placed in the St Andrew's Church in Plymouth England.

Dr Laurie seems to have been a rather unorthodox practitioner, and had been dubbed "Bob Sawyer" by the wits of Greenock, partly because he favoured Sawyer's ointment, but more especially because at his dispensary he announced " Advice given fratis to the poor" which, it was thought, was very much the Bob Sawyer fashion.

Duncan Alexander Campbell's second marriage was to Margaret Macfie , his first was to Sarah McFarlane, in 1835.
This first union produced two daughters Ann Barr Campbell (27-10-1837) and Sarah Jane Christian Campbell ( 23-12-1838) .
The date of the death of Sarah McFarlane is not known at this time.

Mrs Claud Macfie,Gogarburn

It is with much regret we intimate the death of Mrs Macfie, wife of Claud Macfie, of Gogarburn, Midlothian. Which occurred on the 16th instant. Mrs Macfie had been ailing for some time, but was thought to be recovering, and no danger was apprehended until the day on which she died. So recently as the 4th of this month, she had remitted to the secretary of the League Mr Macfie�s annual subscription and her own, and payment for the Advisers and other periodicals which her husband and herself sent to a number of schools in different parts of Scotland for free distribution among the scholars. The deceased lady was of exceedingly amiable disposition, distinguished by an inborn courtesy and sensitive consideration for all around her, and was thus much loved by a large circle of friends, who will deeply mourn her departure. Endowed wit ha deeply sympathetic nature , and inspired with the spirit of Him who went about doing good, Mrs Macfie was profoundly interested in all philanthropic and Christian agencies which seek to promote the well being of the community. In various associations in and around Edinburgh she was a highly-valued and zealous worker, and gave liberally of her means for their support. Many among the poor in her own immediate neighbourhood will sadly miss her kindly presence and sympathising words, which enhanced the value of the benefactions she was ever ready cheerfully to bestow. Mrs Macfie was early identified with the temperance movement.

For about forty years she was a warmly-attached member of the Scottish Temperance League and a most generous subscriber to its funds. By various methods and in a most liberal spirit, she sought to advance the total abstinence cause. The great reform that Mr. And Mrs. Macfie originated in the island of Islay affords a striking illustration of meritorious and successful work.

For about five years, from 1857 to 1861, Mr and Mrs Macfie resided in Islay House, which became the centre of a most remarkable total abstinence movement, which extended over the entire island, and embraced a large proportion of its inhabitants. Mr. And Mrs. Macfie engaged agents of the Scottish Temperance League who addressed large meeting in the different localities with wonderful effect. Clergymen, teachers, farmers, and other came forward and took the pledge, total abstinence societies were formed, the children marched in procession from the schools to the place of meeting , and large additions were made night after night to the ranks of abstainers. The temperance advocates were hospitably entertained by Mr. And Mrs. Macfie at Islay House and were conveyed by them to the different villages and clachans to address the people on, to them, the novel doctrine of abstinence from alcoholic liquors.

The Beneficent work thus initiated by Mr. And Mrs. Macfie in those bygone years took firm root and bears visible fruit to this day, there being many staunch and zealous temperance reformers in the island.
The efforts of Mr and Mrs Macfie for the good of the inhabitants were not restricted to the promotion of the abstinence cause. The also manifested the liveliest interest in the schools in Islay, and monthly supplies of the Adviser and other temperance publications were and are still sent for free distribution among the children. The older inhabitants cherish grateful memories of the considerate kindness of Mrs Macfie during the years of her sojourn among them. Many a public cause in Scotland and elsewhere will suffer by her death, and in private circles more especially, she will be sorrowfully missed.

Mrs Macfie was a sister of Mr Alexander Allan, of the Allan Line, and the fact that Mr and Mrs Allan are now abroad imparts a peculiar feeling of sadness to the melancholy event. With Mr Macfie and the wide circle of relatives we deeply sympathise in the sore bereavement they have sustained in the death of one so much esteemed and loved.

Claud William was a Captain, and served in the German War 1914, he was killed in action 1915, 23 years old ,
he is buried along with his Father and Margaret Allan at the Gogar Kirk Cemetery

Born in Edinburgh the son of Major J. R. Peploe of the Highland Light Infantry.
I read his date of entry into Britannia as September, 1904, passing out on 15 January, 1906 when he was appointed to King Alfred.

Peploe was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1911.
Peploe was appointed Lieutenant in Command of the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 36 on 8 December, 1914.
Peploe was appointed to the battlecruiser Lion on 10 February, 1916 and likely was in her at the Battle of Jutland. He was to leave her on 14 May, 1917 and was presently sent to Vernon for a Torpedo Control Course.
Peploe was appointed in command of the destroyer Westcott on 19 March, 1918.

Post-War

When in command of Westcott on 21 June, 1919, his destroyer was one of just two left to watch over the interned German fleet in Scapa Flow, sitting with ready steam in Gutter Sound the great German scuttle operation began. His executive officer recorded the moment of this sad discovery.
The officers were all gathered in the ward room having a gun before lunch when a sub-lieutenant officer of the watch one the quarter deck shouted through the ward room hatch, "There's a German destroyer sinking." Lieutenant-Commander Peploe, the skipper, answered, "Don't talk such tripe." But they all hurried on deck and saw that every German ship had hoisted its flag and that ladders were being got out and boats lowered. A signal was at once sent to the Vice-Admiral who was at sea.

Peploe was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 December, 1919.
Peploe was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1925.
Peploe was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1932.
Having recently suffered a bout of influenza, Peploe reported that he was to undergo surgery in a private nursing home to have his gall bladder removed on 8 February, 1933.
He died that same day and was buried in Haslar Cemetery

Their son David perished in the German bombing of the RN Engineering College Keyham associated wit the naval base HMS Drake, in 1941,
he was 19 years old , a midshipman - he is buried at Weston Mill Plymouth
