George B. Maddox
c.1765 ~ 1838

George B. Maddox, named after his father, was born in Charles Co., MD, since his father was in the Revolutionary War while living there, and did not appear in Fauquier Co., VA, until 1785.

George Jr. first showed up in the 1790 tax list of Fauquier Co., VA, as follows:

1790 PERSONAL TAX LIST B
George Mattox, pg. 29
John Mattox, pg. 29
Nathon Mattox, pg. 28
Nathaniel Mattox, pg. 10

1790 PERSONAL TAX LIST C
George Maddox, pg. 16
Baylor Maddox, pg. 16
Smallwood Maddox, pg. 16
Lazarus Maddox, pg. 15
Thomas Maddox, pg. 15

George had two white males over 21 in his household and was also responsible for the taxes of Baylor Maddox.  Smallwood Maddox was living next door.  I think the three plus John and Nathon/Nathaniel on PersonalTax List C were brothers.  Lazarus and Thomas were unrelated descendants of Alexander.

George Jr. married on January 16, 1795, to Judith Neale, daughter of Joseph and Mary Neale.  There were a lot of Neals associating with Maddoxes up in Charles Co., MD.

On December 20, 1797, George Maddox Junr signed a
petition to the Virginia General Assembly requesting part of the church lands be sold to relieve their levies to help the poor.  Remember, back in those days, church and state were not separate; members of the General Assembly had to be members of the Church of England, and the king of England was (still is) its head.

Also in this list (it is several pages long) is Dennis Griffiths whose father, Evan Griffith, immigrated from Wales.  Evan had another son, Willoughby b. 1766 Fauquier Co, VA, and d. 1841 Fleming Co, KY.  I believe Hezekiah Griffith who married Rachael Maddox (George's brother John's dtr.) was grandson of Willoughby.

     In the
1799 tax list of Fauquier Co., VA, was George Maddox responsible for himself and Baylor Maddox.  Next door was Smallwood Maddox.  However, this may have been George Sr.

On December 8, 1801, there was another religious petition.  Once again,
George Maddux Junr signed it [Image 1].  And on page [Image] 3 is his father George Maddox, and I think another son, Smallwood.

Then George and his brother John moved to Fleming Co., KY.  George Jr. next showed up in 1802, Fleming Co., KY, tax list for 50 acres on Johnson Creek, Crag Patent with 1 white male over 21.  The tax list for 1803 was the same.

On August 11, 1803, papers were filed at the Fleming County courthouse explaining that George's father-in-law (wife, Judith Neale Maddox's father), Joseph Neale, had previously patented 1000 acres in Bullitt Co., KY.  He gave 250 acres to the surveyor, leaving 750 acres.  The rest was equally divided upon his death between his daughters at 150 acres each.  Judith's husband, George, sold 100 acres of her 150 acres.  On this date in 1803, Joseph Neale's only son ~ Benjamin of Hampshire Co., [W]VA, bought out his sisters.  Apparently Judith Neale Maddox and Joanna Neale Foster had both moved to Fleming Co., for they both signed the deed along with their husbands.  I have a copy of this deed.

On September 6 of the same year, George Mattox purchased the 50 acres on Johnston Fork he'd already been taxed on.  He had apparently been renting it before, or making mortgage payments on it, or perhaps the previous owner finally got around to filing the deed.

George was taxed the same in 1804 ~ 1809 as he had in previous years.

The 1810 census of Fleming Co., KY, page 865, shows George and Judith over age 45 with children the right ages to be Tarpley, Thomas, Richard, William, Lewis, Theophilus, Mary, Elizabeth, Margaret, Athella, and Joannah.  On page 860 is John Mahett/Makett, 45+ with wife, 3 sons and 5 dtrs.  On page 896 is John Matocks and wife 45+ with five sons and 3 dtrs ~ George's brother.  Taxes in 1810 remained the same as before.

In August 1811, George went to the county commissioners about being over taxed.  Order Book C, pg. 270 says, "Ordered that George B. Maddox have a credit for Two dollars the Tax on one stud horse improperly charted to him in 1810 & that the same be certified by the Auditor of Public accounts."

Taxes for 1811 and 1812 remained the same.  Then on June 1, 1812, George B. and Judith his wife mortgaged their 50 acres for 5 shillings.  The tax list gave his 50 acres differently after that, now being on Fleming Creek.  In 1813 it listed Dixon Patent and after that it was listed as Allison Patent.  Perhaps there was a resurvey and they found out his was on a different patent and creek.

In 1816, George's wife, Judith, hung herself.  There was an inquest and found to be self-inflicted.  The inquest and information about her heirs is in Fleming Co., KY, Order Bk. C, pages 270 and 454.

About 1817, George B. Maddox was sued by Joseph C. Bell for $212.50 that he owed him.  It may have been settled out of court.

Did George buy the 50 acres of brother John Maddox?  John's 50 acres was on Allison's Patent between 1808 and 1817.  Beginning 1817, George was taxed for 100 acres on Fleming Creek, Allison Patent.  This continued the same until 1824 when he was taxed for 105 acres instead.

On February 10, 1818, George B. Maddox married Sally Green, 20 years his junior.

In September 1826, the State of Kentucky fined G. B. Maddox, Carpenter, Wallace, Noresez(?) and Henry for failing to show up as jurors.  This must have been a protest on their part.

In 1830, George was the only adult Maddox left in Fleming Co., KY.  John had gone across the county line to Lewis Co.  The 1830 census shows George 50-60, wife Sally 30-39, and children Tapley, a possible grandson, Thomas, Richard, a possible son-in-law, Nancy, Amanda, Margaret, Oletha, and an older dtr. or dtr-in-law.

In 1835, George B. Maddux purchased a bond (mortgage?) of $1000 for "three Several adjoining tracts of land in the State of Illinois [Peoria Co.] totaling 90 acres."  George sold the land, but did not pay off the earlier creditors.

In 1836, George Maddux filed his will and named all his children.  About the same time he sold to his son, George W. Maddox, 49 acres on Fleming Creek for $500.

In probably early January, George Maddox died.  He was buried in the Maysville Cemetery, Mason Co., KY, now taken care of by the Mason Co. Historical Society.  In 1839 his personal estate was inventoried and sold, and his will settled.

In 1840, children Tarpley, Thomas and Nancy chose Edward D. Maddux as their guardian (older brother).  In April 1841, dtr. Amanda chose Simon Carpenter her guardian.  Interestingly, back in 1815, brother John Maddox purchased land next to Simon Carpenter and had dealings with him until close to his death in 1825.

A proven descendant of George B. is an exact match to a descendant of brother John.
