Smallwood Maddox
c.1763 ~ c.1800

Cornelius Maddox married Mary Smallwood in 1683, a hundred years earlier.  Cornelius' and Mary's great nephew, William Smallwood (George's 3rd cousin), became governor of Maryland in 1785.  This same person was the General Smallwood who had been George Sr's commanding officer during the Revolutionary War.  I think General/Governor Smallwood is who George named his son after.

    On December 8, 1797, Smallwood Maddux and George Maddox signed a religious petition next to each other in Fauquier Co., VA.  Look in the second column toward the bottom.

    In the
1799 tax list of Fauquier Co., VA, is Smallwood living next door to George and Baylor Maddox.   I think Smallwood died about the same time as his father, George.

     I believe the information below is actually his son, Samuel Smallwood Maddox, because he is still living in 1860.

===========

     Smallwood married Anna Duncan (b. March 3, 1786 Fauquier Co., VA) on March 4, 1805, in Lincoln Co., KY.  His full name was apparently Samuel Smallwood.

     Joseph Duncan, his brother-in-law, was security for Smallwood Maddox, in Lincoln Co., KY, for 50 pounds, date unknown  The will of Howson Duncan dated January 21, 1814, and proved November 11, included this:

"To Jeremiah Parr, one equal tenth, to Joseph Duncan, one equal tenth, with the addition of fifty pounds in consequence of money paid by Joseph Duncan as security for SMALLWOOD MADDOX, husband to my daughter, Anne ~ but in case said fifty pounds is paid by SMALLWOOD MADDOX to Joseph Duncan on or before the division, then and in that case, my daughter Anne Maddox and her children at the discretion of my Executors one equal tenth in case the above fifty pounds is paid, otherwise the balance to them."

     Smallwood was in the 1830 census of Mercer Co., KY.

     On April 23, 1838, Smallwood Maddox and wife Anna of Anderson Co., KY, sold to William Duncan of Lincoln Co., KY, for $270 1/20 part of a tract conveyed by John Smith to Houson Duncan, father of Anne.

     Smallwood was in the 1840 census of Anderson Co., KY.  He must have lived on the county line or was visiting in Anderson at the time, for in 1850, he was back in the Mercer Co., KY, census.  His was HH 412, wife Anne age 63.  He was age 67 and both were born in VA.

     In the 1860 census of Salvisa, Mercer Co., KY, he was HH 870, age 76, with wife Annie 78, both born in VA.
