Lewis Maddox
1807 ~ aft.1850

The family Bible says Lewis was born August 14, 1807.  But he said in the 1850 census of Clark Co., IL, that he was born in 1810.  I believe Elizabeth was given this Bible in her old age and did the best she could remembering dates.  I have found several instances where she was off slightly from census records, death certificates and tombstones.

The first we hear of Lewis is as a newly wed in Clermont Co., OH, 1830,
five years after his father's death.  In Batavia Twp., Pg. 178 are his mother Betsey Mattox, his brother Thomas Mattox, and between them is young Lewis and his new wife Ellizabeth Hewitt.  In the same county and township nearby was brother William Mattox on page 182.  In Williamsburg Twp, same county, were sisters Rachael Maddox Griffith and Elizabeth Maddox Sweet.

About 1837, Lewis moved his young family to Clark Co., IL.  He bought huge parcels of land totalling 16,163 acres.

1837:  July 18, Lewis bought 4,055 acres in Sec. 6, Twp. 9N, Range 12W, Meridian 2
1837:  July 31, Lewis bought 4,076 acres in Sec. 31, Twp. 10N, Range 12W, Meridian 2
1839:  July 19, Lewis bought 4032 acres in Sec. 6, Twp. 9N, Range 12W, Meridian 2
1839:  Nov. 12, Lewis bought 4,000 acres in Sec. 31, Twp. 10N, Range 12W, Meridian 2

Lewis is in the 1840 census of Clark Co., IL, with sons William and John.  There is another grown female in the house, probably Lewis' sister, Fanny, or a maid.  By this time Lewis was becoming quite wealthy.

His sister, Rachael Griffith, arrived in Clark Co. about 1842.  Sister Elizabeth Sweet went to Vermilion Co., IL, then moved to Clark Co. some time in the early 1840s.  His mother seems to be in Clinton Co., IL, which was formed from Crawford Co.  Brother Thomas moved to Crawford.  So Lewis's entire family was still near each other except for brother William who went back to Kentucky, and brother Benjamin who went to Pickaway Co., OH.  In the 1850s, William and Benjamin would move to Illinois also ~ Douglas Co.

In 1850, Lewis is still in Clark Co., IL, Melrose Precinct pg. 245a, household #1447, age 40, a landlord, along with wife Elizabeth b. Ohio (probably Clermont Co.).  William and John are teenagers.

I have not found Lewis anywhere after this.  Where did he go?
