Notley Maddox
1738 ~ 1801?

While many people believe this is Notley Warren Maddox, I believe that Notley Warren was son of Notley and Mary Warren Maddox of St. Mary's Co., MD (descendant of Samuel), married Frances Dillard, and died in Wilson Co., TN.  DNA of Notley Warren Maddox does not match DNA of Notley's brother, George.  I believe our the  Notley related below was brother of our George who went to Fauquier Co., VA, and that both this Notley and his nephews George Jr. and John all went to Mason Co., KY. where this Notley died in 1801.

Notley Maddox was the first-born of Notley & Elizabeth Martin Maddox in Charles Co., MD.  Younger siblings were James, Henry and George.

He married either Violetta Boswell or Violetta Tarvin.  There were many Boswells in Charles Co., MD.

The first record I see of him is that he fought in the Revolutionary War in Virginia and on August 1, 1783 was granted 200 acres in Kentucky for his service as a private on the Continental Line.  (Some men served in a state militia, not the Continental Army led by George Washington.)  This is probably the land in Campbell Co., KY.  [Source:  VA/KY Warrant #1460]

On November 2, 1785 Notley Matox signed a religious petition in Culpeper Co., VA, requesting that church land be sold to help the needy rather than raising taxes.  A similar petition was signed by brother George in Fauquier, one county over [Citation:  http://rs6.10c.gov/ammem/relpetdateindex.html], and George's sons George Jr. and John.

In 1800, Notley Maddox was on the tax list of Mason Co., KY, with 2 white males over 21.  The next year he was taxed for 4 horses and 125 acres on the Licking River, Campbell Co., KY adjoining Mason Co.

In January 1801, Notley wrote his will, and it was recorded on January 14 (Source:  Mason Co., KY, Will Bk. B, pg. 78]

On June 22, 1801 at the Mason Co., KY, Circuit Court, Notley Maddox's will was proven and approved for inventory.  [Source:  Mason Co., KY, Order Bk. D, pg. 109-111, and Will Bk. B, pg. 109]

That same year there was a new road built in Mason Co. which went past "Worhington Plantation where Notley Maddox formerly lived."  Worthington was one of the witnesses to Notley's will.  [Source:  Mason Co., KY, Order Bk. D, pg. 1681]  The road was to intersect at Germantown which is on the border of Mason and Bracken Counties.

     In 1967, I received a
letter from Grant Maddox, 8414 Dixie Hwy, Florence, KY, talking about his ancestors Hezekiah and Notley Maddox and referring to a family Bible dating back to 1738.  His Notley was not our Notley.

Many people try to say that Notley's first name was William but that he went by his middle name.  If that were the case, he would have used William as his first name on legal documents.  The reason people do this is in order to make him fit a book about Simon Kenton saying William Maddox arrived in Mason Co. around 1795.  A William Maddox did receive 100 acres in 1785 [Source:  Warrant #3958].  As stated above, Notley received his warrant of land under his name, Notley, not William.

Since there were so many Notleys, more proven descendants of the various Notleys are urged to join the
Maddox DNA Project.  This should provide definitive evidence as to which line (Samuel's or Cornelius') their Notley descends from.
