Emma B. Maddox
1863 ~ 1887

Emma B. Maddox was born in Pendleton Co., KY, to Sanford and Mary Fryer Maddox.   She was in the 1870 census of Pendleton Co., age 7, and the 1880 census of Hamilton Co., IL, age 17.

Her family moved to Hamilton Co., IL, to take advantage of a land deal her father couldn't refuse.  There she met George Shields, born and raised there in Shelton Precinct/Township.  On September 4, 1881, they were married.  She was 18 and he was 20.

In 1885, her grandfather, William Maddox, died in Douglas Co., IL, nearby.  Two years later, Emma died.  She was only 24 years old.  She was buried in the Preston Cemetery down the road just a little way.  On one side of the tombstone is the identifier for her brother, William, who had died 5 years earlier.  On the other side was her identifier.  Later her parents would be buried there.

She left behind a husband and one child ~ Cora b. 1882 who grew up to marry Ransom Tolley.  Cora was listed as an heir of her grandfather, Sanford Maddox, in his estate papers in Hamiton Co, 1919.  Cora was in Springfield, Brown Co., Minnesota, at that time.  She may have died there.
