Catherine Maddox
1849 ~ ?

Catherine Maddox was born December 1849 in Bracken Co., KY.  She was named after her grandmother ~ Catharine Brandenburg ~ who was widowed at the time and living with her Maddox daughter and family.  They were all in the 1850 census, household #723.  She was called Kate.

Two years later, tragedy hit the family.  Catherine's grandmother died in the spring, and her mother in the summer ~ both of cholera.  Little Catherine was so young she would never be able to remember her mother.

In the mid 1850s, her father, William, moved the family to Coles/Douglas Co., IL.  Catherine is in the 1860 census, age 10, living with her father, siblings, step-mother, step-siblings, and half-siblings in household #487.   She was still at home in 1870, age 20, in household #210.

In 1880, Kate was living next door to her father in the household of Meder Pugh, 54, and wife Mary E, household 40-41.  Kate was now 30, still single, and identified as Meder's sister-in-law.

How were they related?  Catherine's sister, Sophrona, had married Larkin Humble, son of Squire Humble, in 1854. Squire's mother was Mary Humble, Larkin's grandmother.  Mary married William Pugh in 1816 KY ~ Larkin's grandfather.  So actually, Catherine was a first cousin-in-law once removed of Meder Pugh.  But saying sister-in-law was easier.

Some time after this, Kate married a man named Seaney.  Kate Seaney, b. KY,  age 33, is in the 1880 census of Moultrie Co., IL, living on Harrison St. in Sullivan City, HH 81, next door to a physician.  Husband is William, age 33, blacksmith.  Apparently the informant did not know where her mother was born, and thought her father was born in England.  But I still think this is likely our Catherine.  The boarders were Charles Welch, 23, groom[sman], b. IN (parents b. KY) and Lewis Granvill, 53, groom[sman], b. KY (parents b. KY).

I do not know what happened to Catherine after this.  I cannot find her anywhere.  I wish I could find her in the 1890 census.
