THE BEATTIE AND MCNAUGHER FAMILIES
OF BURT PARISH, DRUMHAGGART, CO. DONEGAL

WITH NOTES ON THE WYLIE AND CONNOR NAMES

RUINS OF BURT CASTLE, BUILT IN THE 1500's

WHY McNAUGHER IS REALLY McCONNOR

This is explained in a more scholarly way in a link on our index page. The explanation is that when English clerks heard the Gaelic version of McCONNOR spoken, they spelt it McNAUGHER or one of many different variations such as McNocker, McNogher - my list goes up to about 50 variants. Martin (a cousin from Derry) has been of great help with the two names. It was apparently the practice during the famine times  for people to be offered land if they changed their religion. It would appear that Martin's family stayed Roman Catholic while mine became Presbyterian. From then on the Presbyterian branch seemed to use McNaugher and the Catholic families Connor. Martin's great great grandmother was Eleanor Connor (who variously used McNaugher, Connor and McNocker). She  was the daughter of Henry McNocker/Connor and Margaret Crumlish. (Henry is the Henry CONNOR on the 1857 Griffiths Valuation below).

Allowing for the various spellings of the name I have compiled what could be my family. Until we get to the 1800's no connections have been proven, but extensive research has been done and there is a very good chance that I am on the right track. If anyone can clarfiy any details at all I would be most appreciative.

I have colour coded the generations to make it a little easier to follow. However for a direct descent lineage to to this page.

In 1740 on a Protestant Householders' List for Derry is:

Hu McNAGH of Ballyrashane, Coleraine. Also on this list is Hu McCONNOR of Loughinshillin. I have Hu McNAGH as the father of Hugh McCONNOR.

Children of Hu McCONNOR and Unknown UNKNOWN:

Margaret McCONNOR born circa 1748 married James HUNTER in 1768. This information was obtained from the Derry Registry of Births and Marriages.

Hu McCONNOR also known as CONNOR b.c. 1750 married Nancy ARBUTHNOT born circa 1755  married about 1775. This couple belonged to the Presbyterian Congregation of Maghera,Townland of  Dunglady at the time of the marriage of their son James CONNOR also known as MacNOGHER (Bann Valley Church Records).

Henry McCONNA born circa 1754 (on the Flax Entitlement List of Maghera 1795). Nothing further known.

Children of Hu McCONNOR/CONNOR and Nancy ARBUTHNOT

Michael (Mickey) MYNOGHER born circa 1776 of Ballyagan, Desertoghill. Derry (Sources: Bann Valley Church Records, 1796 Flax Entitlement List, 1822 and 1831 Tithes. 1818 and 1825 Presbyterian Chuch Visitation Lists). Sources. Michael married Rebecca CASKEY born circa 1793. Rebecca had been married previously to a James LOGAN (1809 Derry Registry). She had two sons John LOGAN born 1811 and Daniel LOGAN born 1813 (living with Michael and Rebecca and their children in 1818 and 1825 (Visitation Lists). Michael and Rebecca  were married circa 1815.

Children of Michael MYNOGHER and Rebecca CASKEY

James MYNOGHER born before 1818 (Visitation Lists 1818 and 1825).

Mary MYNOGHER born before 1818 (Visitation Lists 1818, 1825 and 1840). Married James WILSON  18 April 1845. (Bann Valley Church Records) or Mariah CONNOR married James DRIPPS 1852 (Derry Registry). Mary/Mariah would have been at least aged 34 in 1852 so the James WILSON marriage is more likely. However her sister Peggy Ellen CONNOR born 1829 married Joseph DRIPPS and James and Joseph appear to be brothers.

Andrew MYNOGHER born 13.01.1824 of Ballyagan, Desertoghill, Derry (Bann Valley Church Records). Visitation Lists 1825 and 1840.

Joseph MYNOGHER born 12 October 1826 of Ballyagan, Desertoghill, Derry (Bann Valley Church Records). Visitation Lists 1825 and 1840. A Joseph CONNOR married Rebecca KINCAID 1847 and a Joseph CONNOR married Matilda STEELE 1847 (Derry Registry). The Matilda STEELE marriage is interesting in that Michael's brother James had a son James whose son was Samuel McNAUGHER. Samuel married Jane STEELE (born circa 1832 in Ireland) in the 1850's.

Peggy Ann CONNOR born 16.07.1829 Ballyagan, Desertoghill, Derry married Joseph DRIPPS in 1859 (Derry Registry).

Rebecca MYNOGHER born 15.091831 Ballyagan, Desertoghill, Derry.

Children of Hu McCONNOR/CONNOR and Nancy ARBUTHNOT (continued)

Robert McCONNOR born circa 1778 married Sarah KING 1801 (Derry Registry).

James McNAUGHER born circa 1810 died Drumhaggart, Parish of Burt, Co. Donegal area in 1892 married Elizabeth UNKNOWN born circa 1810 died Drumhaggart area 1871.

Joseph McNAUGHER born circa 1812 possibly the Blacksmith Joseph McNAUGHT in Ballinacor, Co. Donegal in 1843, later Farmer of Drumhaggart, Parish of Burt, Co. Donegal. Known as Joseph McNAUGHER, McNAGHTER and CONNOR. He married firstly Unknown UNKNOWN, secondly Rachel DUNCAN in 1869 (Derry Registry).  Rachel was born in 1830 and married Samuel STERRETT a Widower     2 November 1854 at St Columb's Church of Ireland, Derry (IGI, Derry Registry and World Families,  Rootsweb). Two known children - Fanny STARRETT born 14 September 1865 Glendermot, Derry and Elizabeth STARRETT born 17 May 1868 Rosemount, Derry. Elizabeth married Andrew James  CRESWELL born 3 July 1867 son of Andrew James CRESWELL Farmer of Sappagh, Parish of Muff and Martha KERR.  Elizabeth and Andrew had thirteen children born in Derry.

Joseph was renting land from Isaac CRAWFORD and the Marquis of Donegal in 1857 in Drumhaggart. In 1901 Rachel McNAUGHER was living in Drumhaggart described as a Widow.

Joseph McNOGHER also known as McNAUGHER, McNAUGHT and CONNOR. He was a Farmer at Drumhaggart, Parish of Burt in Donegal. He was born circa 1840 and married Margaret ANDERSON born circa 1834 married 25 November 1859. Joseph married as Joseph CONNOR. Margaret died 21 October 1886 (Death Certificate extract of  Margaret McNAUGHER (nee ANDERSON) of Drumacross near Drumhaggart, Farmer's wife died 21 October 1886 aged 52. Elizabeth KEES, her niece, present at her death.)  This Elizabeth KEES married William John BARNETT. Elizabeth's mother was Catherine ANDERSON who married William KEES, two more of Margaret's sisters married KEES, Sarah ANDERSON married Thomas KEES and Jane ANDERSON married Robert KEES. It appears that the         KEE boys were brothers. Another sister Isabell ANDERSON born circa 1840 married Isaac WILEY. So at last I have a WYLIE connection of which there are many more I am sure.

Joseph McNAUGHER  was living with his son-in-law William DINSMORE, also a Widower in 1901 in Drumhaggart. Joseph McNAUGHER died 29 November 1905. His estate was valued at 208 pounds  It was administered by his son Thomas McNAUGHER described as a Factory Manager. Joseph was described as a Retired Farmer of Drumacross, Co. Donegal. Joseph McNAUGHER and Margaret ANDERSON were my great great grandparents.

CHILDREN OF JOSEPH McNAUGHER and MARGARET ANDERSON
(from IGI and other sources). Surnames spelt as they appear on Registry.

Joseph NcNAUGHER born 19 August 1860 baptised 7 October 1860 Knowhead Presbyterian, Muff Parish, died 1883 aged 22 years.

Catherine (Cassie) McNAUGHER (my great grandmother) born 16 April 1862 baptised 1 June 1862 Knowhead Presbyterian, Muff Parish married John BEATTIE 2 November 1886. Both John and Cassie had died before 1901 in sad circumstances. Cassie died either in childbirth or shortly after. John committed suicide. He was found hanging by his 10 year old son Andrew BEATTIE who cut him down. This would have been in 1900 or 1901.

A John BEATTY and Mary KENNY of Drumhaggart had two children baptised at Knowhead Presbyterian Church, Parish of Muff - Mary BEATTY born 13 April 1842 and Andrew BEATTY born 1 April 1849. A John BEATTY is recorded as having been born 1856 (Derry Registry). On the Marriage Entry for John BEATTIE and Catherine McNAUGHER John's father is recorded as John BEATTY of Drumhaggart, Farmer. Witnesses were Thomas McNAUGHER (brother of Cassie) and Margaret Jane McNAUGHER (sister or cousin of Cassie's). John is described as a Bachelor of Full Age. Joseph McNAUGHER (Cassie's father was described as a Farmer of Drumacross near Drumhaggart. They were married in the Presbyterian Church at Knowhead, Muff Parish by Rev. John Camac.

In a list of landowners in Donegal in the 1870's are Messrs BEATTY and BROWN of Drumhaggart owning 52 acres.  William BEATTY and John BEATTY each rented a house and outbuildings from the Marquis of Donegal and shared 52 acres of land.In 1857  John BEATTY owned 56 acres at Kineeley, Co. Donegal. Family lore has it that John BEATTY  bred horses for the English gentry. John and Cassie had either 11 or 13 children.

Here are the ones we know about, Mary Elizabeth (my grandmother) being the only girl. The children I have knowledge of so far:

Joseph  BEATTY born 1887. In the 1901 Census Joseph aged 14  was living at No. 14  in nearby Muff village with a MOODY family. He is described as a servant. This information is from the 1857 Griffiths Valuation so it is outside the timeframe above, but in 1857 there was a Hugh MOODY in the townland of Elaghbeg in Burt. In 1901 at No 15 Muff Village was a James McNAUGHER, a National School Teacher with his wife Eva Mary and their daughter Loretta Jane. I have no further knowledge of this James McNAUGHER.

William John BEATTY born circa 1888. In the 1901 Census William, James and possibly Thomas (see below) were living with James McNAUGHER (William's great uncle) in Drumhaggart. William is described as a Farm Servant aged 12.

In 1911 William John BEATTY was a farm servant in the household of Sarah Ann DICKSON (nee  WILEY) daughter of  Richard WILEY. She was the widow of Joseph DICKSON (son o f John DICKSON). They were married Muff Parish, Donegal in 1873. In 1901 she was a widow aged 50 with a son John Wiley DICKSON aged 20 and daughter       Sarah J DICKSON aged 18.with two farm servants and a general servant in the household at Craig Townland in the Parish of Muff. The family was Presbyterian. In 1911 John is still in residence as is Jeannie (both single). I presume Jeannie  was Sarah's second name and three servants. This Census describes Sarah Ann DICKSON as having  been married 11 years,  so Joseph must have died about 1884. From the IGI they also had Ann Mary DICKSON  born 20 May 1874, Muff and William James DICKSON born 8 December 1875.   As a matter of interest  there is an  entry for a WILEY/DICKSON marriage  29 January 1846 by the Rev. Richard DILL of Knowhead, Mr Moses WILEY, Merchant of the City of Derry to Mary Jane DIXON eldest daughter of the late Mr John DIXON of Craig, Parish of Muff. They were Moses WILEY married  Mary Jane DICKSON 29 January 1846. There is a Moses WILEY living at Drumhaggart on the 1857 Griffiths Valuation.

William BEATTY of Craig Townland, Muff Parish signed the Ulster Declaration in 1912.  However a William BEATTIE residing  at 15 Fountain Place, Londonderry  with a Lena BEATTIE and Mary Elizabeth BEATTIE also signed the Declaration.  Could this be a case of  a younger child of the family living with an elder married brother? This second scenario seems a little far-fetched as Mary Elizabeth would have only been 6 or 7 years - probably too young to sign the Declaration.

I have received the1901 census details from two sources (see below). One has Thomas BEATTY, Orphan and the other James BEATTY, Orphan both aged 7 years. John and Cassie were reputed to have had two sets of twins. I  suspect Thomas was also living with his Great Uncle James at this time. and have entered him with the Census Details. Thomas Alexander BEATTY was born to John BEATTY and Cassie McNAUGHER 31 January 1894 and baptised 17 March 1894 at Knowhead Presbyterian Church.

John BEATTY born 17 October 1889 baptised Knowhead Presbyterian Church in the Parish of Muff on 19 December 1889.

Andrew BEATTY born 27 September 1891 baptised 15 November 1891 Knowhead Presbyterian Church.  In 1901 Andrew was living with a HUNTER family at No. 5 Townland of Drumhaggart. From the Knowhead Presbyterian Church, Parish of Muff records we have Andrew BEATTY married to Letitia DINSMORE daughter of John DINSMORE Farmer of Gortcormican, Parish of Muff and Margaret GALLAGHER having a son Robert Dinsmore BEATTY born 31 March 1917 baptised 23 April 1917.  In 1912 a Letty DINSMORE signed the Ulster Declaration. She was accompanied by a Mary E DINSMORE. Both were from Gortcormican in the Knowhead and Muff District. On the same page as their signatures were other related names - Jeannie and Mary WYLIE of Drumhaggart, Catherine and Rebecca BELL of Gortnaskea and Catherine BROWN of Culmore. I have been in contact with Andrew's grandaughter, but have had a computer meltdown and have lost details of the rest of the family of Andrew and Letitia. Will update this section when I recover these.

These are the only HUNTER connections I can find in the Burt area. In 1857 there was a John HUNTER at Toulett in Burt, a Richard HUNTER at Drumhaggart, Burt and Samuel HUNTER also of Drumhaggart. A Robert BEATTY married Fanny Ann HUNTER in 1863. This is a Civil Registration so we don't know where this marriage took place.   Edward HUNTER born 1864, Parish of Burt, son of John HUNTER and Matilda McDONNELL. Mary HUNTER born 1865, Parish of Burt, daughter of Robert HUNTER and Mary Ann CAMPBELL.

James BEATTY born circa 1894.

Thomas Alexander BEATTY born 31 April 1894 baptised 17 March 1894 at Knowhead Pesbyterian Church in the Parish of Muff. Family lore says that Thomas died of a heart attack in his early 20's.

Mary Elizabeth BEATTIE born 8 March 1895 baptised 17 March 1895 at Knowhead Presbyterian Church in the Parish of Muff She was my grandmother. On  the 1901 Census she was living with George DONAGHY aged 35 born Co. Tyrone, his wife Margaret DONAGHY aged 28 also born Co. Tyrone and their daughter Eveline DONAGHY aged 6 years. They were living at No. 9 Townland of  Drumhaggart. In the 1857 Griffiths Valuation, Moses WYLEY occupied 9a, William WYLEY 9c, Joseph McNAGHTER 9f and  Robert McNAGHTER 9k. A George DONAGHEY was born in 1870 at Plumbridge, Tyrone. His parents were George DONAGHEY and Mary McALEER.

Family lore is that Mary had been raised by an Aunt surnamed WILEY, but we have since found the above information. Perhaps when she got older she lived with Wiley's. Possibly this is Isabella WILEY daughter of David WILEY and her husband Thomas WYLIE son of Richard WYLIE of Derryvane, Parish of Muff. The search continues.  A daughter of Thomas and Isabella - Eliza Jane WYLIE married William McNAUGHER who was a first cousin of my great grandmother Cassie McNAUGHERMary Elizabeth is thought to have had two brothers killed in WW1 and she also lost a fiance. Any ideas or suggestions would be most welcome. She emigrated to New Zealand after WW1, sometime before 1923 and married Timothy Desmond HERLIHY, from Killorglin in Co. Kerry. Details of their family can be found here).

NOTE: Ages given in Census Returns were often incorrect.

In 1912 George and Margaret DONAGHY were living at Ballyclose, Limavady, Derry. They also signed the Ulster Covenant and Declaration. (Note: Men signed the Covenant and Women the Declaration).

Children of John BEATTY and Catherine McNAUGHER continued

Robert BEATTIE born 29 August 1896 baptised 5 October 1896 Knowhead Presbyterian Church. Possibly killed WW1.

Children of Joseph McNAUGHER and Margaret ANDERSON continued

Margaret McNAUGHER born 1 January 1863. Married James LYNCH. Nothing further known.

Thomas McNAUGHER/McNOCKER/McNAUGHTON born 25 November 1865. Thomas married Martha ORR daughter of Alexander ORR and Sarah MULHERIN of Sappagh, Parish of Muff 30 June 1892 at the Presbyterian Church at Ballyarnett. He is described as being of Drumhaggart and Martha of Sappagh. Witnesses were  their fathers - Alexander ORR and Joseph McNAUGHER. Martha was  born in 1864 Sappagh, Muff and died 1942 Winnipeg, Canada. Thomas McNAUGHER aka McNOCKER is the same person known as Thomas McNAUGHTON who was living in Derry in the 1920's. He was a witness at John BEATTY and Catherine McNAUGHER's marriage. Thomas (now known as McNAUGHTON) and his family were at 13 Barry Street, Derry City at the time of the Ulster Covenant Declaration 1912.  On the day of the Covenant signing, the  Barry Street household consisted of Thomas MCNAUGHTON Snr, Martha, their son Thomas Jnr and younger siblings of Martha - Joseph ORR, Ruth ORR and Maggie Porter ORR together with another Maggie ORR (this could be Maggie ORR (nee BEATTIE) wife of Martha's brother George Henry ORR).Thomas Snr and Martha resided in Princess Street, Derry City.  Members of the family say they cannot recall Thomas and Martha residing at Barry Street, so maybe they had gathered there on the day of the signing of the Covenant. Thomas McNAUGHER aka McNAUGHTON Snr was killed in a motor accident in Derry in the late 1920's - sometime before 1928. From information received from  Bob ORR (who has researched the Orr family) Martha and her daughters (see below) emigrated to Canada on the "Athenia" arriving in Halifax, Nova Scotia  on 3 November 1928.

Children of Thomas McNAUGHER and Martha ORR

James Alexander McNAUGHER born 3 May 1893 Sappagh, Muff Parish.

Thomas McNAUGHER Jnr was probably born in Sappagh too. He was born circa 1898.He had married Margaret COLE circa 1925. They lived at Sappagh, Muff. I have found a Thomas McNAUGHER married to Margaret COLE living in Sappagh in the Parish of Muff. Two children were born there

Children of Thomas McNAUGHER Jnr and Margaret COLE

James McNAUGHER born 18 June 1927
Sarah Ann McNAUGHER born 21 December 1928.

Thomas went with his mother and sisters to assist them in settling in their new country. Family lore says that he went to England where he was living at the  the time of his mother Martha's death in Canada in 1942 (which is confirmed by an obituary for Martha).

Children of Thomas McNAUGHER and Martha ORR continued

John McNAUGHER born 4 April 1899 Sappagh, Muff Parish

Jean
McNAUGHTON born circa 1900 Derry died May 1945 may have preceded her mother to Canada with her husband John (Jack) Hamilton CRAIG. Jack was born in Ireland, fought with  the Canadian Forces in WW1.

The following children went to Canada with their mother Martha after Thomas Snr's death.

Annie McNAUGHTON  (aged 27 in 1928) born circa 1901 never married. She lived with her sister Charlotte and disappears after Charlotte's death on 22 January 1952. No further knowledge of her.

Charlotte McNAUGHTON born 26 December 1905 married John Hugh JOHNSTON also from Ireland. He came to Canada in 1927 and died December 1947  born 1904.

Children of Joseph McNAUGHER and Margaret ANDERSON continued.

Eliza Ann McNAUGHER born 12 March 1869 died 1898 aged 30 years.

Mary  Elizabeth McNAUGHER born 12 March 1869 baptised 23 April 1869 died 1898. Mary married William DINSMORE 1891 (Derry Registry)

Children of Mary Elizabeth McNAUGHER and William DINSMORE

    James Alexander DINSMORE born 1893
    Joseph McNaugher DINSMORE born 1895

NOTES - Mary Elizabeth and Eliza McNAUGHER born 12 March 1869

Unless there is an amazing coincidence here Eliza McNAUGHER and Mary Elizabeth McNAUGHER (below) were one and the same person. My grandmother was named Mary Elizabeth BEATTIE (probably after Cassie's sister) so I would assume that was the name she was known as within the family. Why her death entry has Eliza McNAUGHER I can only wonder, also her registration of birth Eliza McNAUGHER and her baptism Mary Elizabeth McNAUGHER. Her marriage entry gives her name as Mary Elizabeth McNAUGHER.

Children of Joseph McNAUGHER and Margaret ANDERSON continued

James Anderson McNAUGHER born 1885 (Derry Registry). Margaret died in 1886 aged 54 years of age. Perhaps the birth of James 15 years after her last child caused an illness from which she eventually died. A James McNAUGHER was living with William and Elizabeth BELL in St Johnston Town, Taughboyne in 1901. William BELL was a Boot Merchant and James was described as a "Boarder" and "Apprentice Shoemaker". It is interesting that William was a Catholic and his wife Elizabeth Presbyterian. James is listed as a Presbyterian also.

James McNOGHER also known as McNAUGHER born 1840 (Derry Registry) Farmer of Drumhaggart, Parish of Burt. James married Margaret WYLIE 1865 (Derry Registry). From her death entry "Margaret (WYLIE) McNAUGHER of Drumhaggart, Farmer's wife, died 7 July 1880 aged 43 years. Isabelle McNAUGHER present at her death". Probably her daughter.

Children of James McNAUGHER and MARGARET WILEY
(from IGI and other sources)

Isabella McNAUGHER born 12 June 1866 baptised Knowhead Presbyterian Church 6 November 1866 to the USA 1894 married Robert J CONNOR (who was probably born in Ireland) married at Ann Arbor, Washentaw, Michigan, USA in 1899. The Census below  for 1920 for 103 Grove Street, Windsor Locks,  Hartford, Connecticutt shows Robert and Isabella's first child born in 1897 and the IGI gives the marriage             date as 1899. This may be right, but I suspect the researcher who submitted the information to the IGI has taken a guess and the marriage date may not be correct.  Also ages on Census forms are notoriously  inaccurate.

DONEGAL CASTLE

The families below fit into my family somewhere - either as cousins or siblings. Nothing more to go on at the moment.

HENRY McNOCKER/CONNOR of Inch Island born circa 1820 Co. Donegal. Henry married Margaret CRUMLISH. On the 1857 Griffiths Valuations he is described as being of Monreagh,  died Monreagh 1870. Margaret came from Gortnaskea, Upper Fahan. This couple are  the great, great, great grandparents of Martin who gave me this information.  This family and their descendants are Roman Catholics. It appears that about the mid 1860's the families who remained Catholic settled on the CONNOR version of their surname whilst the ones who had adopted Presbyterianism became McNAUGHER.

HENRY McNOCKER aka CONNOR and MARGARET CRUMLISH's children:

Eleanor (Ellen) McNAUGHER aka CONNOR aka McNOCKER born 1846 married William DEEHAN and lived at Rosemount, Derry City.

    Their children:

Maggie DEEHAN  married Unknown McCALLION.  Lived in Osbourne Street, Derry City from 1880 to 1890.

Thomas (Tom) DEEHAN  lived in Artizan Street, Derry City.

Peter DEEHAN 1901 Census (may not be a son)

Joseph McNOCKER born circa 1840 married Bridget GALLAGHER. One recorded child:

Bridget McNOCKER born 1865 - birth registered Kilderry Registration District

Nothing further known of this family, Joseph is not necessarily the son of Henry CONNOR and Margaret CRUMLISH

Alexander CONNOR  (Martin had knowledge of an Alexander CONNOR who moved to Derry from Donegal. I am almost sure the details below pertain to this Alexander.)

Alexander McNOGHER/McNAUGHER  married  Mary McCORKINDALL  two  known daughters

Mary Jane McNAUGHER born 1871 in Bushmills, Antrim and married William John McCONAGHY 31 Mary 1909 in Coleraine, Derry. Mary Jane died 13 March 1953 Bushmills, Antrim.
William McCONAGHY's parents were Alexander McCONAGHY and Catherine MILLER. Known children of Mary Jane and William McCONAGHY

Alexander McCONAGHY born 10 July 1910 and died 26 May 1940 (both events Bushmills, Antrim).

Catherine McCONAGHY born 6 January 1912 in Bushmills, Antrim, married Lewis Francis THOMPSON and died 8 February 1973 in             Coleraine, Derry. Lewis was born Bushmills, Antrim in 1906 and died in Coleraine, Derry on 25 March 1973.

Second daughter of Alexander McNOGHER/McNAUGHER and Mary McCORKINDALL

Margaret McNOGHER born 16 August 1880, Ireland. She died in the Drumhaggart area, Parish of Burt in 1899.

MARTIN
MAY (Martin's Mother)

I hope the above data may give someone some help with their research in Donegal. Thanks to Martin for his contribution. It has progressed this family at an amazing rate. I hope there is someone out there who can progress it even further for David, Martin, Steve and of course, my sake. (Link to David and Steve's families). A very special thanks to Mags in Leeds, Yorkshire for bringing myself and Julie in California  together and for the wonderful friendship that has developed between the three of us. Also all Mags' detective work in unearthing all these new twigs in our trees.

I would like to put some information on the history and geography of Burt Parish at some time. Co. Donegal seems to be one of the overlooked Counties but it has a wealth of history.

Except for my family, I have no knowledge of the other names mentioned above. If anyone can flesh them out, I would be pleased to add the information here.

The spelling of the various names is how they were spelt on the documents involved. McNaugher has about 50 variations (that's the count so far).

Thanks to Lindel for her help and advice. Lindel's wonderful Donegal Genealogy site is on our home page as a link.

Also David. It would be great if we could tie up these connections.

If you think you have any connection or can offer any advice, could you please contact me.
