The following details were received by "Snail Mail" on Monday 27th. October
1997 as a consequence of my having forwarded a message two weeks ago, via
Internet E-Mail, for inclusion in the "Letters to the Editor" section of
the Westmeath Examiner

Dear Matt,
There are nine letters in this week's "Westmeath Examiner"
seeking ancestors, Monaghan, Murtagh, (3 separate queries), Moore,
McCormack and Mahady - all "M" - and from North Westmeath.
I have a very amateur interest in local history,concentrating on
Castlepollard Parish, and I now send you all the references I have
to Mahady. I fear they will not be much use to you, except perhaps
to eliminate most of them from your research.
However, you will note from my message that WILLIAM MAHADY and his
wife living at Carlanstown in 1901, both being born in Co.Longford.
Perhaps they moved to Carlanstown with their family,I do feel that
Thomas in Finea may be his son?. Your William, born 1872 also fits
the time frame.
There are two MAHADY headstones in Russagh Churchyard - about ten
miles from here, and another in Coolamber, about 6 miles away - as
per details enclosed.
When you have separated the wheat from the chaff, and if you do not
get more definite information from other readers, please write me
with your "Wants List" - I can then look at the books in Coole Parish,
and perhaps Boherquill and Rathowen. - I am only an amateur researcher,
and make absolutely no charges for time or postage.

Other Inscriptions for the names Hart,Harte,Malone and Meehan were
received but not copied to these sheets as they were not considered,
at this stage,to be associated with the Mahady Family. Retained on
file for future research.

** The foregoing information, on initial analysis, would seem to
indicate that these are my direct family members with William and
Anne Mahady,my Great Grandparents, residing at Carlanstown during
the Castlepollard Census on 31st.March 1901.
My Thomas Mahady was born on 23rd. March 1867 which would approximate
the 32 years old of Thomas Mahady,Farm servant, at Thomas Keogh's Farm
during the 1901 Census. This being the accepted case then Thomas would
have married Ann Thompson, probably between 1901 and 1904 with their
daughter Mary A. Mahady being born 1905.
According to these records Mary A. Mahady then probably married George
Murray around about 1924,when she would have been 19 years of age and
then had four children between 1925 and 1934.
At this stage, all of the above stated theories are accepted on the
basis that further research will be carried out to prove that William,
Anne and Thomas Mahady are my direct relations, whether by further
correspondence to Castlepollard or by the purcbase of the various
certificates from Dublin Registrars Office.
The excitement I feel at the moment, in relation to these latest records,
which have been so graciously forwarded to my home by Michael Conlon has
to be seen to be believed, but I must gain control of myself and allow
time to provide the answers.
This is not the END but only the BEGINNING.

Dear Michael,
the mere expression "Thankyou" is really insufficient to
indicate the great delight that your letter brought to me when it was
delivered by post to my home on Monday 27th. October 1997, as it was
so unexpected, due to the fact that I had more hope than certainty as
to the connection between my William Mahady and Castlepollard.
Before I go any further, I must advise that this will only be a short
reply, in this instance,as I am busy packing my bags in preparation for
a two week first class holiday in the Queensland Tropical North and will
send this letter off as I proceed on my way to join the other members
of the Tour Group.
I have so much to say in response to your wonderful letter that I will
leave such response until I return home on,or about, the 16th.November
1997,at which time I will provide you with as much relevant details as
I have to hand regarding my Westmeath Mahady Family,however,I must also
advise that you have revitalised my search as, until receipt of your
letter,I had "lost" my Great Grand Parents William and Anne Mahady.
A letter from the British War Graves Commission, in response
to my enquiry regarding family details etc.of my grandfather's brother,
William Mahady, indicated that the only personal information they had
on their records was his registered place of birth,this being shown as
Castlepollard,when he enlisted at Woolwich,London and that he had been
killed in action at Flanders,France on 4th. April 1918,during the War.
My records indicated that he had been born in Granard, Co. Longford,in
October 1872 and consequently did not attach too much significance to
the new location of birth now named as being Castlepollard,Co.Westmeath.
By the way Michael,I classify myself as a Scottish, Irish, Australian
of 62 years, having been born in Scotland in 1935, and then moved out
here to Australia in 1958. I am proud of my Scottish upbringing, love
Australia and my heart is still with Ireland, so what else could this
retired pensioner hope for as he sits here in front of his old Computer
typing out a gracious letter of thanks to a complete stranger who has
opened up new vistas of enquiry and perhaps provide fulfillment to my
years of research.
I will now draw to a close but be rest assured that you will be hearing
from me again, on my return from holiday, and once again Michael -

Dear Michael,
hello there again,says he,as it has been almost a month
since I have returned from my wonderful two week holiday in the Far
North of Australia,and we, my wife and I that is,thoroughly enjoyed
every minute of it.
Anyway,Michael,please accept my sincerest apology for this delay in
responding to your letter,even though I did drop you a line during
October,posted on the day of my trip, to let you know of my pending
holiday and the unavoidable delay this would cause
My troubles and problems commenced the week I returned home,to find
that,even though I had cancelled most of my mailing lists from the
Newsgroups I have been involved with,I did not anticipate that one
of my American contacts would send me a message,comprising of 120
pages of a newsletter he had been distributing to a few other members
of his own Family Group since 1985.
Now this,together with the Newsgroups I had not cancelled,meant that
my four year old Computer eventually froze,and then crashed,causing
me to lose quite a large amount of my files and a couple of programs
I had been working on prior to my holidays and which I had neither
saved on backup diskettes nor retained a Master Copy as they had been
Freeware from other sources. I should have known better!!!
As a Director on the Board and Committee Member at my local Lawn Bowls
Club,all voluntary & unpaid,of course,I had been storing a number of
Reports from some of the sub-Committees and unfortunately these were
the first to go, as I had instructed the Computer Technician that my
Genealogical Research Records were my priority as these had all been
gathered over almost a ten year period,including trips to Irieland
(1990 and 1995),and probably my last, and at this stage irreplaceable
as I would not be able to obtain the same quality of research as I had
carried out personally.
The final chapter in this Soap Opera type drama is that I have restored
as much as was humanly possible and my Genealogical Research Data is now
back on line,hopefully, and I am able to send you some of the copies of
my records pertaining to County Westmeath and including Coole,Boherquille
and Rathowen,amongst others.
Having only been instructed in 1996,that being my 61st. year,on all of
the wonders of the Computer World and then being self - taught during the
early part of 1997,prior to my then gaining my Cyberspace Pilot Licence to
cruise the NET from 27th. May 1997,I have thoroughly enjoyed this new and
exciting venture and look forward to new horizons
Michael,the enclosed listings will give you some idea as to the extent of
detail I have managed to gather,over the last few years,and I decided to
send them to you because of your kind offer to assist,where possible,as
you mentioned in your letter dated 17th. October 1997. I do hope you manage
to understand the format as the printout is vastly different from how the
programme actually shows up on the screen and I have added a portion to the
end of this letter hoping to try and explain what is actually missing from
my printout listings.
It would seem that the Computer is unable to transfer the wording from the
original programme sheet and will only subtract the details which I have
added,afterwards, during the entering of my research details,however,the
additional portion,at the end,should resolve any such problems you may
encounter.
