John Strange Harrison and Mariah Louisa Baker The following information was compiled on the John Strange and Mariah (Baker) Harrison family (John was the youngest son of Bazel Harrison and Martha Stillwell) by Scott Duncan, with contributions from Justin Herbst, Pat Goth, Cathy Gowdy, Jan Getz, Marie Mackey, Martin Cassidy, Kinne and Jeff Hawes and Judy Taylor Graham.  Mariah was the daughter of James and Nancy (Stillwell) Baker.  I have included references throughout, data that appears in italics has been transcribed from newspaper articles, county histories and other sources and should be verified.

John Strange Harrison and his wife Mariah "Eliza" Louisa (Baker) Harrison, original portraits are in the possession of Bill and Joan Harrison.

After their marriage on November 22nd 1842,  John and Louisa first appeared in the 1850 Federal Census of Prairie Ronde Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, enumerated on the 8th of August, living between his parents and his sister Worlender and James Fellows:
#1125 1139    John S. Harrison    30    m    " [Farm]    O.
                    Louisa       "          23    f                     "

                    Jonathan   "           11    m                   "
                    Emeline    "             9     f                    "
The Baker children were Louisa's siblings, her mother Nancy Baker, died in 1847 and John and Louisa were taking care of the younger children.

In the 1860 Federal Census of Prairie Ronde Township, Post Office Schoolcraft, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, enumerated on the 30th of June, their household listed:

#506 506    John S. Harrison    40    m    Farmer    7,600    1510    Ohio
                 Maria L.      "        33     f                                           "

                 George        "        18    m                                        Michigan
I cannot account for George, age 18, listed in the 1860 census above.  Also missing from the 1860 census was their daughter Esther, born in 1854 (I believe she was living in the household, just missed by the enumerator).  William, Martha and "Elen" had all attended school within the last year.  John's notable neighbors in the 1860 census were Hector Wagar, Preston J. McCreary, Zachariah Fletcher, Edward Longwell and his older brother Bazel Harrison, Jr.

In the 1870 Federal Census of Prairie Ronde Township, Post Office Schoolcraft, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, enumerated on the 1st of July, their household listed:

#167 180    Harrison, John Jr.    50    m    Farmer                13,000    3,000    Ohio

Neighbors noted in the 1870 census were his older brother Bazel, Jr., Preston McCreary, Zachariah Fletcher, Erastus Williams and his cousin, Frederick Harrison, son of his brother Elias Stillwell Harrison.  "John Sen.", was his father, Bazel Harrison, who would live 4 more years, he died in 1874.

In the 1880 Federal Census, John and Mariah were again enumerated living in Prairie Ronde Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, ED# 139, sheet 281B, enumerated on the 15th of June:

#215 228  Harrison, John S.   m   60             Farmer              Ohio       Maryland  Penn

By 1880 all their children except for Owen and Sarah were married on living on their own.  John and Mariah were recorded in the last census before their deaths in the 1900 Federal Census of Schoolcraft Village, Schoolcraft Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, ED# 131, sheet 5A, enumerated on the 7th and 8th of June (John and Eliza both stated that they had been married for 58 years; Eliza stated that she had given birth to 10 children, 7 of whom were still living):

In the 1920 Federal Census of Elba Township, Gratiot County, Michigan, she is living with her daughter Cora Pearl Meade, at age 71.  William C. Wooley was the son of John K. Shirley, on 20 December 1893 (Kalamazoo County Marriages, Book 5, page 238, # 2548).  Ida was the daughter of John Shirley and Hannah M. Russell (Owen and Ida's wedding announcement from the Schoolcraft Express).  Owen died on 31 December 1935 (obituary).

Ida F. Ida F. (Shirley) Harrison

After Ida's death, Owen was remarried to Iva V. Woodley, I have not located their marriage record.  In the 1910 Federal Census of Fairplain Township, ED# 152, Montcalm County, Iva was living in the household of her (1st) husband, James W. Woodley, they had no children and stated that they had been married for 3 years (~1907).  In the 1920 Federal Census of Greenville, Montcalm County, Michigan, James and Iva's household listed:

Ten years later in the 1930 Federal Census of Fairplain Township, ED# 16, Montcalm County, Michigan, James Woodley was working on the George F. Iva's son, Claude Albert Woodley who was also mentioned in Owen's obituary, was born on 2 November 1910 and died on 1 April 1977.  Claude's obituary dated 2 April 1977, from the Greenville Daily News:

Claude Woodley is listed in the transcription of East Montcalm Cemetery, Montcalm Township, Montcalm County, Michigan.  After Owen's death Iva Harrison apparently moved back to Montcalm County.  She did remarry after Owen's death, Montcalm County Marriages, Book E, page 230, lists a marriage between Iva Harrison and Milo Larsen, in 1937.  There is a Iva V. Larsen buried in East Moncalm Cemetery, her inscription gives her birth as 1883 and her death as 1966.  Her birth date from the SSN# death index (last name recorded as "Larson") is given as 17 October 1883, her death as October 1966.

Harrison Homestead as it appeared in the 1910 Atlas of Kalamazoo County

There were some unanswered questions involving the loss of Bazel and Martha (Stillwell) Harrison's original old “homestead” after Owen's death.  The Harrison Farm had been passed from Bazel and Martha to their youngest son John S. Harrison, who later passed ownership of the farm to his youngest son Owen W. Harrison.  It was thought that perhaps Iva gained possession of the “homestead” upon Owen’s death in 1936.  However, the probate record of the Owen W. Harrison Estate clearly shows what actually occurred. The first will of Owen W. Harrison, signed 6 August 1931, written after the death of his first wife Ida F. (Shirley) Harrison, revealed that Clare Harrison had obviously lost favor with his father, Owen had left him only $10.00, and the remainder of his estate to his sister Emma (Harrison) Longwell..  The first will was never executed, but it was included in the probate record.    Interestingly, he appointed his lawyer, John W. Adams as his executor. The second will of Owen W. Harrison was drafted and signed about three months prior to his death, in September 1935, after his second marriage to Iva Woodley.

In his second and final will, Owen W. Harrison again named his lawyer as the executor of his will.  In the probate of his estate Mr. Weston determined that the income produced by the Harrison Farm was insufficient to pay the debts and expenses accumulated by Owen W. Harrison, and ordered that the contents of the estate be sold.  In June of 1936, Bazel and Martha Harrison’s original “homestead”, along Harrison Lake, was sold to Harry C. and Maude Bradford for $7700, along with a ten-acre parcel sold to Vern J. and Clara L. Gilbert for $500.  The Harrison “homestead” settled in November of 1828, and in the same family through three generations for a period of almost 108 years, had been sold.

Mr. Weston divided the remainder of the estate equally between Clare S. Harrison and Iva (Woodley) Harrison.  Clare and Iva received $684.13, after all accounts and debts were paid.  Clare and Elsie Harrison then rented the farm from Harry C. Bradford until about 1946 or 1947.  Clare S. Harrison would have had to buy farm implements and all those farming tools necessary to work the farm and feed his young family, since everything had been sold as part of his father’s estate.
