Lucius Bingham Kinne was born on 5 August 1850, in New York the son of Elias G. and and Amanda (Alvord) Kinne (his biography).  According to Family Bible records, Elias and Amanda were married on 4 November 1849, probably in Livingston County, New York (see the 1850 census data for Elias below).  Amanda was born on 29 May 1826 and died on 28 February 1855.  Elias G. Kinne was was born on 20 January 1818, probably in Pennsylvania, and died on 1 June 1882.  The record of Elias Kinne's death, from Kalamazoo County, Michigan shows:

"Date of death: 15-Jun-1882

News of his death appeared in the Kalamazoo Gazette, dated 18 June 1882:

Family bible records also show that Elias and Amanda Kinne had other children: Frank E. Kinne, born on 7 August 1852 and died on 28 July 1898; and a set of twins, Elias G. Kinne, Jr. and Amanda Alvord Kinne, born on 7 August 1854, the twins both died on 11 August 1854.

Elias G. Kinne, age 32, born in New York, was living with his first wife, Amanda, age 26, also born in New York, no children listed, in the household of Phineas and Rachel Alvord in the 1850 Federal Census of Mount Morris Township, Livingston, County, New York.  Elias listed his occupation as a "merchant", his personal worth was shown as "$ 6000".  Ten years later, in 1860, Elias G. Kinne was living alone in a Hotel in Paw Paw Village, Layfayette Township, in Van Buren County, Michigan:

In 1860, his two sons, Lucius B. "Kiny", age 9 and Frank, age 8, both born in New York, were still living with Phineas and Rachel Alvord, in Mount Morris Township, Livingston County, New York.  Lucius B. Kinne later gives his birthplace as "Michigan" in the 1870 census, but later censuses show his birthplace as New York.  His father also alternates from Pennsylvania on his death record and the 1880 census to New York in the 1850, 1860 and 1870 censuses.  Ten years later, in 1870, L.B.'s father, Elias G. Kinne, is living in the household of David Brown, with his second wife, Ella A. Royal.  Bible records show they were married on 18 December 1863, a newspaper clipping gave the location (Geauga County, Ohio):

"KINNIE - Married in East Claridon, December 14, 1863, E. G. KINNIE of Lake Mill, Michigan, and Ella A. ROYAL of East Claridon." [Jeffersonian Democrat, December 25, 1863]
Prior to their marriage in 1863, Ella or Ellen was living in the household of David Brown, in the 1860 Federal Census of Claridon Township, Geauga County, Ohio:

In the 1870 Federal Census of Michigan of Texas Township, Kalamazoo County, Lucius Kinne was living in the home of his uncle, Allison Kinne:

In 1870, Frank Kinne, age 17, born in New York, Lucius B. Kinne's younger brother, is living with and working on the farm of of Henry and Harriet Brooks in Portage Township (Allison Kinne and the Brooks family were neighbors in the 1850 Census).  Coincidentally, my great great grandfather, John Shirley, Ida F. (Shirley) Harrison's father, also lived and worked on the Allison Kinne farm.  John Shirley is shown living with the Kinne Family in the 1860 census, just prior to his marriage to Hannah Russell in 1861.  Allison Kinne's death (his last name, as well as his father's, is misspelled as "Kuine") was recorded as 16 June 1873:

"Date of death: 16-Jun-1873

From the Kalamazoo Gazette, dated 20 June 1873:
The death of Allison Kinne, of Texas Township was reported last Tuesday.  His age was near 70.  He came to this county in 1831.  Another respected citizen has gone to his fathers."
Family Bible records show Ellen's birth as 3 November 1833 and her death as 1878.  Elias and Ella Kinne were both living with David Brown in 1870, in Antwerp Township, Van Buren County, page 216R:
#225 213  Brown, David    51    m    Physician              17500    2500    Penn

There were other Royal families in Antwerp Township, in 1870, including Melvin Royal, now married, who appeared in David Brown's household in 1860.  In the 1870 census Esther Harrison was living in the home of her parents, John and "Eliza" Harrison in Prairie Ronde.

In the 1880 Federal Census, Frank E. Kinne, unmarried, is shown as a "boarder", age 27, living in the household of William and Maggie Harrison (William was Esther Harrison's older brother).  Also living in Texas Township in 1880, were Allison and Lydia Kinne's son, Henry, with wife Media Kinne, son Allison, age 9, daughter Jamie, age 8, and Henry's, mother, Lydia Kinne, age 64.  Family Bible records that Frank Kinne was married on 6 June 1886 to Minnie Wyckoff, Minnie's birth was listed as 21 June 1868.  Frank and Minnie had two children: Glenn Royal Kinne, born on 11 March 1888; Genevieve Marie Kinne, born on 11 October 1891 (the 1900 census listed her birth as Oct 1892).

After Frank Kinne's death in 1898, Minnie and her two children were enumerated in Marmaton Township, Allen County, Kansas, ED# 12, sheet 1B.  Minnie stated that she was born in June 1867 in Illinois.  In the 1910 Federal Census they were living in 2nd Ward, Lawrence City, Douglas County, Kansas, ED# 66, sheet 8A.  Minnie listed her occupation as running a boarding house, both Glenn and Genevieve were still listed in the 1910 household.

Glenn Kinne also made his way to Seattle and also pursued a career in the pharmaceutical business.  In the 1920 Federal Census of Seattle, ED# 252, King County, Washington:

#[unreadble] 222   Kinne, Glenn  head   m   31  Kansas  druggist drug store
Eva       wife       f     31    Canada    none
Minnie     mother   f     52    Illinois     none
Glenn and Eva Kinne later moved on to Oklahoma where they were located in the 1930 Federal Census of Washington County, Bartlesville, Oklahoma, ED# 2, sheet 8A, enumerated on 9 April, their household listed: Glenn, age 41, occupation, "merchant",  "drug store", birthplace Kansas; and Eva, age 41, birthplace Canada, occupation "partner", "drug store" (Glenn and Eva both stated that they were married at age 30).

Esther and "L.B." were also living in Texas Township in 1880 and according to her obituary moved west to Kansas in 1881 (this would have been after their Lou Kinne's birth in September) and finally to Seattle, Washington in about 1906.  In the 1880 Federal Census of Texas Township, Kalamazoo County Esther and L.B.'s household listed:

#81 84 Kinne, Luciles B.     m     28                     Grocer               New York
Esther          f      26      Wife        keeping house    Mich
                     Clare           m      2       Son                                 Mich
                     Pearl            f      6/12   Daughter                          Mich
Living alone in the 1880 Federal Census, Elias G. Kinne, lived just two households away from his son in Texas Township.  Under the column showing sickness or disability, is written an unreadable phrase, he listed his father's birthplace as "Conn", and his mother's as "Enn":
#87    Kinne, Elias G.    m    62    Grocer    Penn
I then located Esther and Lucius Kinne in the 1895 Kansas State Census online.  They were living in Moran City, Allen County, Kansas, recorded in Volume 4, page 5 .  Their household consisted of:
Kinne LB                        44    m    New York
Kinne, Esther Harrison      40    f     Michigan
Kinne, Clare B.                18    m    Michigan
Kinne, Lulu F.                  14    f     Michigan
Kinne, Bessie P.                9    f     Kansas
Kinne, Verle                      5    f     Kansas
Five years later in 1900, the Kinne family was living on Franklin St. in Marmaten Township, Allen County, Kansas:

    #111 111    Kinne, Lucius B.    head        m    49    New York    Druggist
                               Esther H.   wife          f     46    Michigan

Bessie       daughter    f     14    Kansas      at school
Verle         daughter    f       9    Kansas      at school

L.B. and his son Clare B. Kinne continued their work in the pharmaceutical trade, in Esther's obituary it stated that L.B. was the "proprietor of the University Pharmacy" (the University of Washington).  After Esther's death in 1916, the Kinne household consisted of the following family members in the 1920 Federal Census of Seattle, 15th Street N.E., Enumeration District #73, King County, Washington:

#4522 182 147   Kinne, Lucius, B.  head  67  wd New York   druggist

In the 1930 Federal Census of Seattle, King County, Washington, ED# 67, enumerated on 16 April, Lucius B. Kinne was living at 2807 11th Ave. North, in the household of his son-in-law, Albert J. Stratton, along with his daughter Verle and their son Robert Y. Stratton.  Lucius Kinne gave his age as 79 years old.  He died five years later on 10 August 1935.

I thought that was the end of the L.B. Kinne story--however, I had still not located his son, Clare B. Kinne, in the 1930 census, and there was still no explanation for L.B.'s his missing marker in Evergreen-Washelli Cemetery, next to his wife Esther.  After the 1930 Federal Census of California was indexed; I did finally locate Clare and his wife, Frances, living in Los Angeles, Los Angeles City, in the unincorporated place of Hollywood, ED# 59, sheet, 7A, enumerated on 12 April--what I did not expect to find was L.B. Kinne recorded as the head of the household!  L.B. was recorded in the California census as the head of household on the 12th of April and then must have traveled to Seattle to visit his daughter where he was recorded in the 1930 census for the second time, four days later on the 16th of April.

Martin Cassidy solved the rest of the riddle, by obtaining a copy of L.B. Kinne’s burial certificate from Evergreen-Washelli Cemetery.  Clare Kinne made the burial arrangements for his father, and stated that his father died in California, L.B.'s funeral was held on Wednesday, 14 August, 1935 at 4 p.m.

The children of Esther M. Harrison and Lucius Bingham Kinne:

13.14.5.1 Clare Bernard Kinne, was born on 7 October 1877 in Kalamazoo County, Michigan.  Clare married Frances Curl, Frances was born on 5 November 1880.  Clare pursued a career in the pharmaceutical trade, following in his father's footsteps.  Clare and Frances appeared in the 1930 Federal Census with his father in Los Angeles, California.  After his father's death in 1935, Clare may have moved back to Smith Center, Kansas, however, Clare did die in California and is listed in the California Death Index 1940-1997:

Name:  Clare Bernard Kinne
DOB: 7 October 1877 in Michigan
DOD: 19 June 1958 in Riverside, California
Father's last name: Kinne
Mother's maiden name: Harrison

I finally located the Hawes family in the 1930 Federal Census of Marietta, Washington County, Ohio, ED# 20, sheet 13A, address 219 Fourth St., enumerated on 16 April (Edward stated that he was age 27 at the time of his marriage, Lou stated that she was age 29):

"Kinne M. Hawes passed away unexpectedly but peacefully at his Mercer Island home Sunday morning, April 30, 1995. He will be remembered for the love, quiet warmth, and humor he gave to those who knew him. He loved sports, first as a participant, and later as a spectator, avidly and proudly following the exploits of his sons and grandchildren.

Kinne was born on February 1, 1913, in Everett. After four years at the UW, Kinne entered the produce business with Pacific Fruit & Produce Co. He later joined F. X. Bloxom Co., a produce brokerage in Seattle. Following military service in Europe under Patton during World War II, he returned to the brokerage as a partner, where he continued his career there until his retirement in 1984. He was well respected in the industry for his fairness and honesty, and was often called upon by colleagues for advice and direction. During retirement he enjoyed gardening, especially working with roses. He made many good and close friends through his business and his church, Emmanuel Episcopal on Mercer Island, and greatly valued those relationships throughout his life.

Kinne is survived by Ann, his wife of 56 years; his brother, Nat, of Lacey, WA; three sons and daughters-in-law, Kinne F. and Cori, Steve and Janise, and Jeff and Lisa. He was also the beloved grandfather of Kristin, 21; Laura, 17; Jennifer, 15; Ellis, 13; Spencer, 7; and Kaila, 4. He is and will be missed by all who knew him.
