Descendants of William Harrison and Susannah Mace/Mays The following information pertaining to the descendants of William Harrison and Susannah Mace/Mays was complied from several sources.  A very big thank you to C.R. "Bob" Harrison of Jefferson County, Iowa for his patience and assistance with this line and thanks also to Paul and Valona Aspy.  Shadrack Harrison was the son of William and Worlenda (Davis) HarrisonWilliam Harrison was Shadrack Harrison's son.    Subsequent generations can be viewed by clicking on the individuals name--

Descendants of William Harrison and Susannah Mays

14.2.1 Robert Harrison    was born in about 1842 in Iowa (the family data sheet from Jefferson County lists his birth as 1843; the 1860 census indicates that he was born in about 1842).  Robert died on 25 September 1899 in Jefferson County, Iowa and is buried in the Old Fairfield Public Cemetery.  He was married (1st) to Mary Ann Kirk; they divorced on 5 September 1866.  Robert married (2nd) Henrietta D. Miller, the daughter of Wm. Fred Miller and Dorothy Adler.  Henrietta was born on 8 June 1848 (1870 Census shows her birth in "DC") and died on 3 March 1922 in Wapello County, Iowa according to the Jefferson County death index.  Robert was a veteran of the Civil War and served in Co. E 30th Iowa Volunteer Infantry and Co. K 6th Iowa Volunteer Infantry.

In the 1880 Federal Census of Penn Township, Jefferson County, Iowa, page 320A, Robert and Henrietta, were living next door to his younger brother Benjamin, and his father William.

After Robert's death in 1899, I did finally locate Henrietta in the 1900 Federal Census of Trenton Township, Grundy County, Missouri, ED# 60, sheet 5A, enumerated on the 5th and 6th of June (Henrietta stated that she was widowed and had given birth to 10 children, 9 of whom were still living):

#108 118    Harrison, Henrietta    Head  June 1845  54  Maryland  Germany  Germany  War Pensioner
Arthur    Son    Feb  1879  21  Iowa        Iowa       Maryland  Salesman (Racket)
Gertrude  Daughter  Sept 1881  18  Iowa        Iowa       Maryland  Day laborer

Evelena  Daughter  Oct  1886  13   Iowa        Iowa      Maryland

Henrietta was again enumerated living in Trenton City, 4th Ward, Grundy County, Missouri, ED# 61, sheet 4B in the 1910 Federal Census (Henrietta stated that she had given birth to 10 children, 8 of whom were still living; Evelena stated that she had been married for 3 years and given birth to 1 living child):

#102 104  Harrison, Henrietta   Head  62  Wd   Washington D.C. Ger German  Ger German        Own income
Dilley, Evelena     Daughter  23   M    Iowa                 Iowa            Washington D.C. Laundress
Florence M.  Grand Daughter   3         Missouri            Missouri        Iowa

In the 1920 Federal Census, Henrietta had moved with her daughter, Evelena back to Iowa (see data under her daughter Evelena's name, linked from Robert Harrison's name above).

14.2.2 William H. Harrison, was born in about 1845 in Iowa, note that on the 1860 Census he is listed as "deaf and dumb".  in 1880, there is a "Henry Harrison", age 35, born in Iowa, father born in Pennsylvania, mother born in Iowa and wife, Mary Louisa, age 27 born in NY, living next door to William and Susannah Harrison, in Penn Township, on page 320A.  Both Henry and his wife Mary Louisa were listed as "deaf and dumb" on the 1880 Census.  Not located in the 1900 census.

14.2.3 Shadrack Harrison, was born in about 1849 in Iowa.  Shadrack married Margaret Ade Horrocks on 9 January 9 1877 in Ringgold County, Iowa.  Margaret was the daughter of William and Elizabeth Horrocks, their 1870 household in Lotts Creek Township, Ringgold County, Iowa listed:

#27 27    Horrocks, William    46    m    Farmer                Canada
Elizabeth    44     f     Keeping house     Ohio
William    20    m     Broom Maker        Illinois      Blind

Percifield, Martin    24    m    none                    Missouri    Insane
After their marriage in 1877, Shadrack and Margaret were listed in the 1880 Federal Census of Caledonia Village, Ringgold County, Iowa, page 112D:
#21  21    Harrison, Shederic    m    31                Farmer                  Iowa
Margaret    f     17      Wife    Keeping house       Iowa
                            William     m      2      Son                                Iowa
                            Clyde        m    1/12   Son                                 Iowa
In the 1900 Federal Census of Des Moines Township, Van Buren County, Iowa, ED# 94, sheet 6A, his household listed (this looks to be a second marriage for Shadrack, they both stated that they had been married for 6 years (in about 1894); Levi his step-son was widowed):
#120 119    Harrison, Shedrick    Head  Jan  1849   51  Iowa  Ohio    Tennessee    Farmer
Eliza         Wife   Jun  1851   49  Ohio   Pennsylvania    Pennsylvania
Skinner, Levi    Step Son  Feb  1873   27  Iowa  Ohio    Ohio    day laborer
Harry  Grand Son  Aug  1885    4  Iowa  Iowa    Iowa
In the 1910 Federal Census, Shadrack's age was listed as 62 and he was living in the Henry County Home, in Center Township, Henry County, Iowa, ED# 30, sheet 2B.

Margaret also remarried and there is evidence that she and Shadrack had another son before their divorce.  From the 1900 Federal Census of Columbia Township, Kingfisher County, Oklahoma, ED# 106, sheets 5B and 6A (Frank and Margaret both stated that they had been married for 4 years; Margaret stated that she had given birth to 4 children, 3 of whom were still living--Frank also stated that he immigrated to the U.S. in 1880):

#108 109    Engle, Frank    Head     Dec    1863    36    Germany    Germany    Germany    Farmer
Margaret    Wife      Sept  1863     37    Iowa         Canada      Germany
Harison, Alley H.  Step Son  Oct    1884     15    Iowa         Iowa         Iowa
Ten years later in the 1910 Federal Census of Oklahoma City, 3rd Ward, Oklahoma County, Oklahoma, ED# 216, sheet 1B, address 305 W. Washington St., enumerated on the 15th of April their household listed (Frank and Margaret both stated that they were married for 12 years; there were no notations as to how many children she had given birth to or the number of children that were still living--both were blank):

#25 21    Engles, Frank   Head   42  Ger German  Ger German  Ger German  1882  Keeper Boarding House
Margaret   Wife    42  Iowa           Canada         Pennsylvania        none

There were two boarders also listed in the 1910 household.  Margaret's son Alley Harrison was a patient in the Oklahoma Sanitarium, Hospital for the Insane, in Norman Township, Cleveland County, Oklahoma, ED# 32, sheet 6B, enumerated on the 6th of May.  Alley's age was listed as 25, his birthplace was listed as unknown, parents birthplace also listed as unknown.  Frank and Margaret were enumerated for the last time before their deaths in the 1920 Federal Census of Columbia Township, Kingfisher County, Oklahoma, ED# 224, sheet 7A, enumerated on the 20th and 21st of January:

#89 90    Engles, Frank   Head   56  1882 n/a 1891  W. Prussia   Prussia   Prussia  Enginer  Farmer
Margurite   Wife    57                        Iowa           Canada   Pennsylvania
Which means that Frank gave the year of his immigration as 1882 and the year of his naturalization as a U.S. citizen as 1891.  From the funeral home memorial record:
"Frank Engels born in Germany passed away at Sentinel, OK on Sept 12, 1927
64 years old."

"Mrs. Margaret Horrocks Engels, birthplace Iowa passed away at Carter, OK on
December 30, 1929, Age 67 years 2 months and 17 days"

The known children of Shadrack Harrison and his (1st) wife Margaret Ade Horrocks were:
14.2.3.1 William Harrison, was born in about 1878 in Iowa.
14.2.3.2 Clyde Harrison, was born in about 1879 in Iowa.
14.2.3.3 Alley Harrison, was born in October 1884 in Iowa.
Margaret Ade Horrocks family data contributed by Myra Watkins.

14.2.4 Emeline Harrison, was born in April 1852 in Iowa (1900 census) and died in 1916.  She married Frederick Henry Edler, he was born in November 1852 in Iowa (1900 census).  I have not located the Edler's in 1880.  The 1895 Iowa State census listed:

Henry F. Edler 41  Jefferson Co Iowa  W  Jefferson  Walnut
Emeline Edler 39  Jefferson Co Iowa  W  Jefferson  Walnut
Susanna Edler 17  Jefferson Co Iowa  W  Jefferson  Walnut
William Frederick Edler 14  Jefferson Co Iowa  W  Jefferson  Walnut
In the 1900 Federal census they were recorded on the second of June, living in Walnut Township, Jefferson County, Iowa, ED# 54, sheet 1A (both Henry and Emeline stated that they had been married for 23 years; Emeline stated that she had given birth to 4 children, 2 of whom were still living; their incorrectly listed ages look to be a mistake by the enumerator who added wrong; Fred's age was recorded incorrectly as 20, the enumerator then crossed out 20 and wrote 19 above it):
#2  2  Edler, Henry  Head  Nov  1852  57  Iowa  Germany  Ohio  Farmer
Emeline   Wife  Apr   1852  58  Iowa  Michigan  Iowa

In 1910 they were recorded in Trenton Township, Henry County, Iowa, ED# 41, sheet 7A (both Frederick and Emeline stated that this was their first marriage and that they had been married for 39 years [which doesn't match the 1900 census]; Emeline again stated that she had given birth to 4 children, 2 of whom were still living):

In 1920, 4 years after Emeline's death, "F.H." Edler was living in Phelps County, South Dillon Township, Missouri, ED# 70, sheet 5A:
#98  Edler, F.H.  Head  69  Iowa        U.S.  U.S.  Farmer  General

Their two known children were:
14.2.4.1 Susannah Ellen Edler, was born on 22 November 1877 in Iowa and died on 1 December 1949 in Davenport, Iowa.  She married Alva Hill on 21 September 1897, he was born on 15 April 1877 in Guernsey County, Ohio and died on 5 April 1958 in Davenport, Iowa.  In the 1900 Federal Census the Hill's were recorded on the 12th of June, living in Clay Township, Washington County, Iowa, ED# 108, sheet 4A (both Alva and Susannah stated that they had been married for 2 years; Susannah stated that she had given birth to 1 living child):

Susannah and Alva divorced sometime after 1920 and before 1930.  Alva married Velma (Chapman) and in the 1930 Federal Census they were recorded in Richland Township, Keokuk County, Iowa (his son "Leroy" was living in the adjacent household, see below).  I have not located Susannah in 1930.  Their children through 1920 were:

14.2.4.1.1 Clarence Leroy Hill, was born in September 1898 in Iowa.  "Roy" was married by 1930 and was enumerated living next door to his father and step-mother in Richland Township, Keokuk County, Iowa, ED# 21, sheet 1B:

14.2.5 Nancy Harrison, was born in about 1854 in Iowa.

14.2.6 Phebe J. Harrison, was born in about 1855 in Iowa.

14.2.7 Benjamin Harrison, was born in about 1859 in Iowa.  In the 1880 Federal Census of Penn Township, Jefferson County, Iowa, page 320A, he was living next door to his parents:

14.2.8 Joseph Harrison, the 1870 Census of Penn Township, Jefferson County, Iowa, page 16, shows his birth in about 1862 in Iowa.  The 1900 census data below shows he was born in May 1861.  In the 1880 Federal Census, "Joe Harrison", age 19, born in Iowa, was living and working just across the Iowa border, in Terre Haute, Henderson County, Illinois, on the Joe and Louiza Johnson farm.

In the 1900 Federal Census of Scott Township, Henry County, Iowa, ED# 37, sheet 11A, his household listed (Joseph and Isabell both stated that they had been married for 8 years; Isabell stated that she had given birth to 3 children, 2 of whom were still living):
