Martha Harrison
The following information concerning the life of Martha Harrison and William A. Bishop, Martha was the daughter of Bazel and Martha (Stillwell) Harrison.

Martha Harrison and William A. Bishop
Martha was unmarried according to Stone's biography of her father, Bazel Harrison when the family set out from Clark County, Ohio in 1828.  I have found no record of their marriage, Martha and William's oldest daughter was born in August 1834 in Michigan, so they were probably married sometime between 1832 and 1833 in Michigan.  In the 1840 Federal Census William A. Bishop was enumerated in Leroy Township, Calhoun County, Michigan.  His household was recorded adjacent to the household of Martha's older brother, Ephraim Harrison.  The 1840 Bishop household consisted of:

Head of Household
males under 5
males 20 & under 30
females under 5
females 20 & under 30

Martha (Harrison Bishop was still living in the 1900 Federal census (see the 1900 census data under her daughter Amanda's name below).

The children of Martha Harrison and William A. Bishop were:

13.11.1 Amanda M. Bishop, was born in Michigan in August 1834 (1900 census).  The Pedrick Genealogy Notebooks at the Ripon Library, in Ripon, Wisconsin, list her date of birth as 23 August 1834 in "Prairie Round".  It also states that Amanda was married at age 19 in 1853 to Ezra G. Carpenter who 15 years later became a "Cong'l minister" preaching in Iowa and Wisconsin.  He died on 25 August 1879, the Pedrick notes state that "their ch. all died".

They must have also lived in Minnesota for a short period, Amanda's daughter, Hattie, was born there in about 1865.  In the 1860 Federal Census, Amanda and her husband Ezra Carpenter were living in Wellington Township, Post Office Wilton, Monroe County, Wisconsin, enumerated on the 20th of July:

#1408 1390    Ezra J. Carpenter     30    m    Physician    1000  500    NY.
                    Amanda     "            27    f                                       Mich

Ten years later in the 1870 Federal Census of 2nd Ward, City of Grand Rapids, Wood County, Wisconsin, page 5, enumerated on 15 July, their household listed (notice that the census enumerator had mixed up the places of birth for the family; Nancy Whipple also stated that her father and mother were of foreign birth):

#38 36    Carpenter, Ezra    40    m    Clergyman          Michigan
Amanda    37     f     Keeping House   Minnesota
                        Hattie        5     f                             New York
Whipple, Nancy   52    f     Domestic Help    Wisconsin
                Osterman, Etta  17    f           "         "       New York

Amanda is listed as a widow in the 1880 Federal Census of Ripon, 1st Ward, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, ED# 55, page 422D, enumerated on 7 June:

#75 76    Carpenter, Amanda M.    F    45    wd    Keeping House    Michigan    Penn       Ohio
                               Hattie L.     F    15      s                              Minnesota  New York    Michigan

The Pedrick notes also state that she married (2nd) "AB Pratt on Apr. 20, 1895".  In the 1900 Federal Census of Ripon City, 4th Ward, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, ED# 42, sheet 13B, enumerated on 15 June (nothing was listed for Amanda in the columns for childbirth):

#269 283    Pratt, Amasa    H    Mch    1817    83    Mass        Mass        Mass    [none listed]
Amanda    W   Aug    1834    65    Michigan   Mich         Ohio
Bishop, Martha    Mother in law  June   1814    85    Ohio        Maryland   Va [or Pa]
The Pedrick notes state that Amanda is interred on the Carpenter lot in Hillside Cemetery in Ripon.  Her known daughter was:
13.11.1.1 Hattie L. Carpenter, was born in 1865 in Minnesota and died in 1893.

13.11.2 Henry M. Bishop, was born sometime between 1834 and 1836 in Michigan and probably died before 1880.  He married Charlotte Sykes, Charlotte she was born on 4 March 1842 and died on 16 April 1892 at age 50, they are both listed in the inscription of Fairwater Cemetery in the Village of Fairwater, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin (also see the linked biography of her brother Gustavus Sykes above).

They were married after 1860, Charlotte Sykes was recorded twice in the 1860 Federal Census of Dayton, Green Lake County, Wisconsin.  In both instances her age was listed as 21, her birthplace was listed first as Michigan and second as New York.  She was listed as servant in the household of Asa and Augusta Langley and again as a servant in the household of Farnum and Sarah Chickering (August Sykes, age 17, born in "N.Y." was also listed in the Chickering household).  The 1870 census data for Henry and Charlotte is listed above, I do not believe that Rose, listed as age 12 in 1870 was their daughter.

Another researcher provided the following information about Charlotte Sykes, taken from The Descendants of Richard Butler of Hartford, Connecticut, compiled by the late Walter Percy Butler (1856-1939) of Milwaukee and edited by Kathryn Morris Wilkinson.  Charlotte's parents are listed as William E. Sykes, Jr. and Huldah Thayer, page 180:

"...the 2nd of 3 ch. She m. 1st Feb. 22, 1861, Grand
Prairie, Wis., Henry Bishop, son of William Amos and Martha
(Harrison) Bishop. When Grandma Sykes died the children lived for
several years with other relatives. When Charlotte m. they moved to
a farm near Fairwater, Wis. to remain until 1873/74. (Henry) was in
the livery business until his death in 1877. His wife remained
there until 1880 when she moved to Milwaukee where she died. There
were two Bishop children....

"William [sic, Henry] was descended from a pioneer Michigan family. His
grandfather was the 1st white settler in Kalamazoo Co. and a cousin
of Pres. William Henry Harrison. The family was a long lived,
sturdy race on both sides. The mother Martha Harrison lived beyond
the age of 82, the father William A. d. in Feb. 1894, aged 86. The
grandmother Harrison lived to be within 3 mo. of 100 years and the
grandfather Harrison died at age 103 years 6 mo."

Their known children from the 1870 census above were:
13.11.2.1 Sophronia Bishop, born in about 1863 in Wisconsin.  Again from the The Descendants of Richard Butler of Hartford, Connecticut:
"...b. July 26, 1863 on a farm 2 miles from Fairwater; living in 1898 in Milwaukee, where she was employed as a stenographer; m. July 17, 1882, Milwaukee, to John Edward Jones who was b. in Dodge Co., Wis.  She separated from her husband prior to the birth of her child.  She never liked her given name and always was known as "Frona."
I have not located Charlotte or her daughter, Sophronia in the 1880 census.  In the 1900 Federal Census of Milwaukee, she was boarding and recorded as Fannie Jones, age 35, birth listed as July 1864 in Wisconsin, parents place of birth listed as Michigan.  She listed her marital status as widowed and also stated that she had given birth to 1 living child.  Occupation was listed as a stenographer in a real estate business.  Her son, Frank was listed as an inmate in the Wisconsin Industrial School for Boys, in Waukesha, Wisconsin.  Frank Roy Jones was listed as born in June 1883.

In 1910 Frona (her name is indexed as Veona) was living in the 1st Ward of Milwaukee, age 45, marital status listed as married (her first) and that she had been married for 18 years.  She listed her place of birth as Wisconsin, her father's place as Michigan and her mother's place of birth as New York.  She listed her occupation as a stenographer in a law office.  I did not locate her son, Frank in the 1910 census.  I did not locate Frona in 1920, her son Frank was living in Milwaukee (see below).  In the 1930 census they were living together in California.  Her son was:

13.11.2.1.1 Frank Roy Jones "b. June 9, 1883 Milwaukee."

In the 1920 Federal Census of Milwaukee, 19th Ward, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, ED# 231, sheet 9B Frank's household listed (street address 458 52nd Street):

#187  221  Jones, Frank R.  Head  37  Wisconsin  Wisconsin  Michigan  Salesman  Securities
Gertrude   Wife  35  Wisconsin  Vermont    New York
Celest  Daughter  6  Wisconsin  Wisconsin  Wisconsin
Francis    Son  2 4/12  Wisconsin  Wisconsin  Wisconsin
Alice  Daughter  5/12  Wisconsin  Wisconsin  Wisconsin

In the 1930 Federal Census of Compton Township, Los Angeles County, California, ED# 878, sheet 2A, his household listed (frank listed his marital status as divorced, Frona listed her marital status as widowed):

#42 34 Jones, Frank R. Head 46 Wisconsin Wisconsin Wisconsin Advertising Manager Collection Office
Frona  B.  Mother  66  Wisconsin  Michigan  Michigan  None
Francis R.  Son 12  Wisconsin  Wisconsin  Wisconsin
Edith C.  Daughter  10  Wisconsin  Wisconsin  Wisconsin
Marjorie  Daughter    3 11/12 California  Wisconsin  Wisconsin

13.11.2.2 Dean William Bishop  born in about 1866 in Wisconsin.  From The Descendants of Richard Butler of Hartford, Connecticut:

"Dean William Bishop b. July 17, 1866, Fairwater, Wis. Unwed.  He left home at 18 and went to N. Y. state where he learned the trade of painting and paperhanging, later returning to Wis. to work, part of the time as a brakeman.  In 1894 he moved to Louisiana and became overseer of a large rice plantation.  No other data."
Dean Bishop was enumerated as a Private, serving with A Company, 40th Infantry USV (United States Volunteers) in the Philippine Islands.  Dean listed his residence as 14th Street, #126, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, month and year of birth as July 1865 and his age as 34.  Place of birth listed as Wisconsin, parents place of birth listed as Ohio.

Dean's military service record from the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) shows that he enlisted in the 40th U.S. Volunteer Infantry, in Muskogee, Indian Territory (later Oklahoma) on 2 September 1899.  Dean served until 30 June 1901, his character was described as “very good” and physical condition as “good”, at discharge.  His next of kin on all documents in his service record was listed as Fannie Jones of Milwaukee.  Without going into details, he wasn't exactly a model soldier; however, he did serve his country faithfully.

I have never located Dean after 1900, place and date of death unknown.

13.11.3 Hannah M. Bishop, was born in 1850 in Michigan.  She may have been the "Mrs. Nickey" residing in Cal. in 1906, listed in the Pedrick notes.

13.11.4 Unnamed Bishop, a son who lived two days.  He is also listed in the inscription of Fairwater Cemetery in the Village of Fairwater, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin.
