Descendants of Eliza M. Fellows
and Horace Johnson
13.8.6 Eliza M. Fellows, was born on 16 June 1843 and died on 16 May 1914 in Bremerton, Washington. She married Horace M. Johnson on 18 October 1858 in Central Point, Goodhue, Minnesota (marriage certificate), the son of Henry Johnson and Wolata Peckham. He was born on 25 December 1821 in Lancaster, Erie County, New York, and died on 9 December 1909 in Blue Hill Township, Sherburn County, Princeton, Minnesota. From his pension records, Horace served in Company H of the 1st Minnesota Infantry and Company G of the 1st Minnesota Mounted Rangers during the Civil War. After Eliza's death, her daughter Myrtle (Johnson) Stangler filed additional papers pertaining to the pension on behalf of her deceased mother.
The Johnson's were living in New Hartford Township, Winona County, Minnesota in the 1870 Federal Census. Their household consisted of Horace M. Johnson, age 43, occupation "farming", birthplace New York; Eliza, age 24, birthplace Michigan; Frank N., age 11, Lillian N., age 7; and Kate age 4, all of the children were born in Minnesota.
The 1880 Federal Census of Mankato Township, Blue Earth County, Minnesota, ED# 6, sheet 302D, enumerated on the 5th of June listed household #60 of 60: Horace M. Johnson, age 59, occupation farmer, birthplace New York, he listed his parents birthplace as Vermont. Eliza M., was age 36, born in Michigan, father's birthplace listed as Pennsylvania, and her mother's birthplace listed as Ohio. Their children living at home were: Lillian B., age 15, born in Minnesota; Catherine, age 12, born in Minnesota; and Bessie C., age 5 born in Minnesota.
Twenty Years later in the 1900 Federal Census of the City of Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, ED# 86, sheet 10B, enumerated on the 5th and 6th of June, the Johnson household listed (Eliza and Horace both stated that they had been married for 25 years; Eliza stated that she had given birth to 6 children 5 of whom were still living; Kate and Fred both stated that they had been married for 15 years; Kate also stated that she had given birth to 4 children 3 of whom were still living):

13.8.6.1 Frank W. Johnson, was born in about 1859 (birth listed as April 1860 according to the 1900 data census below) in Minnesota. By 1900 Frank was married and enumerated in New Hartford Township, Winona County, Minnesota, ED# 184, sheet 5A, recorded on the 8th of June (Frank and Marian both stated that they had been married for 13 years; Marian stated that she had given birth to 6 living children):#92 94 Johnson, Frank Head Apr 1860 40 Minnesota New York Michigan Farm Laborer
Frank and Marian added two more children to the family by 1910 when they were recorded living in Pleasant Hill Township, Winona County, Minnesota, ED# 184, sheet 7B, on the 30th of April. Frank was age 51, Marian age, 43, they both stated that they had been married for 23 years; Marian stated that all eight of her children were still living. The children listed in the 1910 household were: Mervin, age 14; Addie, age 11; Harold, age 7 and Lillian, age 4. Frank listed his occupation as a farm laborer. The Harold "Jim" Johnson Family: standing are Loretta, Kermit, and Gerald; seated are: Thomas, Jim, Sandra, Helen and Russell. Photo submitted by Dottie Goodwin.By 1920 Marian was widowed, and living in Grant County, Monroe Township, Wisconsin. There is a Frank Johnson listed in the Minnesota Death Index, in Winona County, date of death listed as 2 July 1914 (--unconfirmed, if this is the correct Frank Johnson, but the place and date would match). Their two sons, Otis and Wesley were both married and enumerated on the same sheet as their mother in 1920 (Grant Township, Monroe County, Wisconsin, ED# 126, sheet 5A). Mervin was married and still living in Pleasant Hill, Winona County, Minnesota in 1920. Their eight children were:
13.8.6.1.1 Olive Johnson, was born in May 1887 in Minnesota.
13.8.6.1.2 Wesley Johnson, was born in November 1888 in Minnesota.
13.8.6.1.3 Otis Johnson, was born in March 1890 in Minnesota.
13.8.6.1.4 Edward Johnson was born October 1892 in Minnesota.
13.8.6.1.5 Mervin Johnson, was born in February 1896 in Minnesota.
13.8.6.1.6 Irene Addie Johnson, was born in May 1899 in Minnesota.

13.8.6.1.7 Harold Johnson, was born in about 1903 in Minnesota.
13.8.6.1.8 Lillian Johnson, was born in about 1906 in Minnesota.
13.8.6.2 Lillian B. Johnson, was born on 12 April 1864.
13.8.6.3 Katheryn Johnson, born on 17 January 1868 in Minnesota. "Kate" may have fudged her age a little in the 1900 census she was age 12 in the 1880 census. Kate married Fred Vaughn in about 1885 (see the 1900 census data above). After Judy Howard sent Bessie (Johnson) Borneke's obituary, I located Kathryn Townsend in Montana. Her marriage to Fred Vaughn must have ended in a divorce or he abandoned the family, she had remarried by 1910 and her children were recorded with the last name "Townsend". From the 1910 Federal Census of Great Falls, Cascade County, Montana, ED# 35, sheet 2B (Charles stated that this was his first marriage, both Charles and Katherine stated that they had been married for 24 years--which could not be possible since she was still married to Fred Vaughn in the 1900 census; Kathryn stated that this was her second marriage and she had given birth to 4 children 3 of whom were still living):
Ten years later in the 1920 Federal Census of Great Falls, Cascade County, ED# 27, sheet 21B, Charles was now age 55, he listed his occupation as a "Contractor" "painter"; "Katherine", listed her age as 49, sons Harry W., age 32, single, occupation "Cigar Maker"; and Clarence E., age 24, single, occupation listed as a "Stationary Engineer" were still living at home.In the 1930 Federal Census of Great Falls, Cascade County, Montana, ED# 10, sheet 32A, Charles was now 66, and listed his occupation as "painter" "house", he also stated that he was married at age 43, "Kathryn" was finally a little more honest and listed her age as 61 years old, she stated that she was first married at age 17, also listed in their household was their son, Harry W., age 44, divorced, occupation laborer [unreadable word], and "Laverine" [probably Laverne], a granddaughter, age 4 years and 11 months, born in Montana.
Several of the Townsend's are listed in the Cemetery Index of Cascade County, Montana burial listed in New Highland Cemetery. Katheryn's date of death is listed as 1940, Harry W.'s date of death is shown as 1963, Robert H.'s date of death is shown as 1981. There is also a Charles M. Townsend listed with a date of death of 1954, which if it is him, would mean that he would have lived to be about 90 years old. Additional information from cemetery records was provided by a volunteer from Cascade County, Montana:

13.8.6.3.1 Harry, was born in September 1886 in Minnesota. Harry W. and his brothers must have been adopted by Charles Townsend after Kate remarried. Harry W. Townsend did marry and divorced sometime between 1920 and 1930. He and his daughter were both living with his mother and stepfather in the 1930 census. His daughter was:13.8.6.3.1.1 Laverne Townsend, was born on 26 July 1925 (SSN# Death Index). Laverne or LaVerne as it is spelled in her husband's obituary, married Kenneth Saubak on 19 September 1948, in Great Falls, Montana. She died 5 May 1998, in Great Falls, Montana. Kenneth's obituary appeared online in the Great Falls Tribune on 30 October 2002:"World War II Army Air Force veteran Kenneth Saubak, 85, 2605 8th Ave. N., a retired bowling alley mechanic, died Tuesday at a local hospital of natural causes.

He worked at the Corral, the Paris of Montana, Town and Ranch Furniture, Andy's Tire Co. and Little's Lanes Bowling Alley, where he retired after 20 years as their mechanic and ball driller. While at Little's, he taught his son, David, who works there now, everything he knew, and even after retiring, he still spent time there and called the place home.
He was a member of Moose Lodge No. 532. He was a handyman of all trades and if it was broke, he would fix it. He enjoyed helping people, especially his friends, and loved spending time with his grandchildren."
13.8.6.3.2 Clarence, was born in April 1893 in Minnesota. Clarence Townsend did marry and later moved west, I located living in Multnomah, Multnomah County, Oregon, ED# 261, sheet 2B, in the 1930 Federal Census:

Fred was age 56, born in Germany and gave the year of his immigration to the U.S. as 1876. His occupation in 1920 was a "farmer". Bessie gave her age as 46 and birthplace as Minnesota. Also of note in the 1920 census were Otto and Katy Borneke living on the opposite side of Arthur's household: Otto was 78 years old, born in Germany and also gave the year of his immigration to the U.S. as 1876. Bessie and Fred's children were:

13.8.6.5 James N. Johnson, was born after 1880 and died in February 1945, in St. Cloud, Minnesota (his obituary). His obituary stated the his was 67 in 1945--however he does not appear in the 1880 household. James married Maime J. Howard on 30 June 1910 in Princeton, Minnesota. Their wedding took place in the home of her parents, Anson Howard and Emma Stadden. Maime was born in 1889 in Princeton, Minnesota and graduated from Princeton High School in 1909. In the 1910 Federal Census of Princeton Township, Mille Lacs County, Minnesota, ED# 112, sheet 4A, enumerated on the 18th of April, she was still listed in the household of her parents, at age 19. She died suddenly on 14 December 1918 of influenza and pneumonia, the funeral was held at the family residence in Princeton, Rev. Milne, from the Congregational Church presided over the funeral services. Burial was at Oak Knoll Cemetery, in Princeton, Minnesota. She was survived by her husband and 2 sons aged 7 and 5 (Howard and Burton).
James Johnson did not remarry after Maime's death and was listed as widowed in both the 1920 and 1930 Federal Censuses of Princeton Township, Mille Lacs County, Minnesota. In 1920 he listed his age as 40 years old, his occupation was shown as a "janitor" at a "schoolhouse". In the 1930 Federal Census of Princeton, Mille Lacs County, Minnesota, ED# 23, sheet 5B, he was again shown with his two sons: Howard D., age 16 and Burton L., age 15. James stated that his father's birthplace was New York and his mother's place of birth was Michigan. His occupation was listed as an "electrician" "general work". Their two sons were:

13.8.6.6 Myrtle Johnson, was born on 22 May 1887, and died before 1930. Myrtle married Joseph Stangler in about 1903--(see also the link above under her mother). Joseph and Myrtle were living exactly where she stated they lived in the papers she filed after the death of her mother. 1910 Federal Census of Bremerton, Kitsap County, Washington, ED# 227, sheet 8B, address listed as 1048 Broadway (both Joseph and Myrtle stated that this was their first marriage and they had been married for 7 years, Myrtle stated that she had given birth to 3 living children):
The Stangler's were again enumerated in Bremerton, Kitsap County, Washington ED# 53, sheet 2B, in the 1920 Federal Census. Joe Stangler was age 43, working as a cement contractor. Myrtle gave her age as 36. the two children in their 1920 household were: Joe M., age 18, occupation listed as a cement helper and Myrtle, age 12.Myrtle may have died before 1930, in the 1930 Federal Census of Bremerton, Kitsap County, Washington, ED# 8, sheet 9A (the image is very difficult to read--), Joseph was age 55, widowed, living with his daughter, Myrtle, who was now married to Russell Gotthardt. Also in the household was Joseph Stangler, his son, now age 26, also married, his wife Edna, age 24 and sons Joseph M. Stangler, age 5, and Russell Stangler age 3 11/12.
Even though it doesn't mention his family, I believe that Joseph Stangler was interviewed as part of the WPA, Western Work gangs Project in 1939. He sounds like an very interesting character.... Joseph Stangler is listed in the Oregon Death Index, date of death listed as 20 February 1958, place of death listed as Multnomah County, Oregon, spouse listed as "Myrtle". A volunteer sent the following information from a local newspaper:
