John and Sally (Harrison) Barber Listed below are the descendants of John and Sally (Harrison) Barber.  Sally is listed in James H. Stone's "A Biographical Sketch of Judge Bazel Harrison The First White Settler of Kalamazoo County", published in 1874, as a daughter of Bazel and Martha Harrison.  However, Mr. Stone stated that Sally was born in Pennsylvania before Bazel and Martha departed Washington County.  Sally is also listed in the Ross Coller Notes as a daughter of Bazel and Martha (Stillwell) Harrison.

Although I am not certain that Sally Harrison was their daughter--I am certain that the Sally Harrison and John Barber who were married by J.P. McCreary, on on 6 July 1840 in Kalamazoo County, witnessed by Bazel and Martha Harrison, are the same Sally (Harrison) and John Barber listed below.

The names of her sons and the birthplace of her parents as Sally stated in the 1880 census, tends to indicate that Sally may have been the daughter of Bazel and Martha's son, Nathan Harrison and his wife Anna Botkin.  She certainly fits in the family, and would have left Michigan about the same time that Nathan and Anna Harrison also moved west.

Throughout the Barber family pages are references to "The Todd County Histories", transcribed by Janet Warner, a Todd County, Minnesota volunteer who graciously provided information on the Barber family.

After their marriage in Kalamazoo in July 1840, John and Sally moved west after 1841.  Their son, James M. Barber, was their only child born in Michigan in about 1841.  Charles, their second son was born in Wisconsin in about 1842.  In 1850 they were living in Pleasant Valley Township, Marquette County, Wisconsin:

                 Martin L. "        1     m                               " "
                 Jane Keeler     12      f                               Michigan
Jane Keeler, listed above, was the future wife of John Strange Harrison, son of Ephraim Harrison.  I can only guess that Jane was helping Sally take care of the Barber boys (Jane was enumerated twice in the 1850 census).  In 1860 John and Sally were living in Gilford Township, Post Office Bear Valley, Wabasha County, Minnesota:
#735 692    John Barber     46     m     Farmer     1500 500     Vermont
                 Sally    "          38     f                                      Ohio

In the 1870 Federal Census, the Barber's were still living in Gilford Township, Post Office Lincoln:

In 1880 Sally was widowed, and the family had moved from Wabasha County to Burnhamville Township, Todd County, Minnesota.  The Todd County Histories give John Barber's date of death as 1872.Sally listed her age as 58, her father's place of birth was listed as Pennsylvania, and her mother's place of birth was shown as Ohio.  Her household consisted of unmarried sons, George, age 28 and Nathan, age 21.  Also living in Burnhamville Township were her married sons, James, Francis and Amos (their 1880 households are listed under each of their names below).  The Todd County Histories give Sally (Harrison) Barber's date of death as 21 March 1894.  A lookup volunteer from Todd County provided the last chapter in Sally's life--
Todd County, Minnesota Deaths, Book B,  Page 44, Line 5:

Sally Barber Died 24 March 1894 in Burnhamville from cancer.  She was born in Ohio, was a widow, age 72 years, 0 months, and 19 days old. Her parents were listed as Ben Harrison and Martha.

The children of Sally Harrison and John Barber were:

(1) James Madison Barber    was born in about 1841 in Kalamazoo, Michigan and died on 19 May 1890 in Minnesota.  James married Ora E. McIvor, The Todd County Histories show her name as Ora Elizabeth McIvor, born on 4 April 1850 in Wisconsin.  It also states that their date of marriage was 13 August 1867.  Her death was recorded in Todd County:

"Ora Elizabeth Barber   Book E, Page 6, Line 5--Died a widow on 25 Sept 1911, at the age of 61y. 6m., 21 d., cause was Brights Disease.  She was born on 4 April 1850 in WI. No parents were listed."
The Todd County Histories also mention that James served in Company G, 3rd Minnesota Infantry Regiment.  Madison Barber" is listed in the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System, in Company G, his name is also listed as "James M. Barber".  He was mustered in as a private on 3 October 1861 at age 21, listed his birthplace as Michigan, his residence as Wabasha and was mustered out as a corporal (no date listed, however it does show that he re-enlisted on 1 January 1864).

(2) Charles Barber, was born in about 1842 in Wisconsin and died before 1860.  The Todd County Histories stated that Charles died young from a ruptured blood vessel.

(3) Amos E. Barber  was born in about 1844 in Wisconsin.  From the Todd County Histories:
"Amos E. Barber, son of John and Sallie Barber, was born in Wisconsin in 1843, but removed with his parents to Minnesota in 1856.  As a youth, he enlisted in 1861 in the Fifth Minnesota Regiment of Infantry.  His regiment was sent south immediately and saw some of the hardest fighting of the war.  His regiment arrived at Shiloh, Miss., just at the close of the battle.  He was sent at once to Corinth and there the helped defend against the attacks of the Confederate generals, Price and Van Dorn, in which the enemy was defeated with heavy losses.  The following spring he was with General Grant at the capture of Vicksburg and Mr. Barber was one of the first Union men to enter the city.  He was with General Banks in the expedition up the Red river and at the end of the campaign , was sent into southern Mississippi, where he was at the end of the war.  With a fine record as a soldier, he was mustered out of the service in 1865, and returned to Minnesota.  He came to Todd county in 1878 and for many years was in the employ of the government as a driver of the mail wagon in Minnesota.  On coming to Todd county he settled first at Burnhamville, but removed with his family to Long Prairie about 1895.

At Waterloo, Iowa, Mr. Barber married Mrs. Susan Jenkinson and to this marriage were born the following named children: Eva, who married J.H. Perkins, and resides in Long Prairie; Harry, who has for a number of years been a soldier in the regular army of the United States; Nathan C., who married Miss Estella E. Hurd, and resided in Hudson Wisconsin.

Amos Barber passed away while visiting at the home of his stepson, J.R. Jenkins, and was brought to Long Prairie for burial.  Mrs. Barber died on February 9, 1916."

In the 1880 Federal Census of Burnhamville Township, Todd County, Minnesota, page 327D, he was living near his mother:

I did not locate Amos and Susan in the 1900 census, however, they were living in Long Prairie Village, Todd County, Minnesota, ED# 181, sheet 10B, in the 1910 Federal Census.  Amos listed his age as 66, birthplace shown as Wisconsin, occupation listed as Mail Carrier, R.F.D.  Susan was age 66, born in New York, they both stated that they had been married for 48 years, Susan also stated that she had given birth to 3 living children.  Their children were:

Barber  was born in about 1874 in Iowa.  In the 1900 census he was widowed and living with his uncle Martin or Luther Barber (see below).  His father's biography stated that Harry served for a number of years in the Army.  I could not find Harry in the 1910 census, however I did locate him in the 1920 Federal Census of San Diego, San Diego County, Camp Kearny, California, ED# 230, sheet 15B.  Sergeant First Class Harry E. Barber, single, age 46, marital staus single, was listed as a clerk for the 354th Truck Company.  He listed his place of birth as Iowa, his father's place of birth as New York and his mother's place of birth as Michigan.  Harry retired from the Army sometime before 1930, he was enumerated in the 1930 Federal Census of Coronado Township, San Diego County, California, ED# 35, sheet 14A.  Harry was now age 57, he stated that he was married at age 45, his occupation was listed as a laborer for "Ad management".  His wife, (whose name is very difficult to make out) Lea [?] was age 41, stated that she was married at age 33, making their date of marriage in about 1922.  She listed her birthplace as Iowa, her father's birthplace as New York and her mother's place of birth as Missouri.  Her occupation was listed as proprietor of a "hand laundry".  Also listed in their household was a nephew, Howard Needham, age 20 born in Colorado, Howard listed his occupation as a filling station laborer.
