Elias Stillwell Harrison Listed below is information pertaining to the life of Elias Stillwell Harrison and his descendants.  Elias was the son of Bazel and Martha (Stillwell) Harrison.  His first wife Mary Elizabeth Sager, was the daughter of Hannah (Harrison) and Frederick Sager (Hannah was the daughter of Joseph and Bathsheba (Oglesby) Harrison) which also made Elias and Mary Elizabeth first cousins, which is why their children are numbered twice.  Elias was married a second time to Maria or Mariah Gardner, his children with his second wife are also listed.  Much of this family data was contributed and researched by Justin Herbst, Cathy Gowdy, Marie Mackey, Gerald Marose, Robert Aurandt and Skipper Beers.  Gerald contributed the great photos of the Harrison family plot in Lakewood Cemetery, Lake City, Wabasha County, Minnesota.

Elias Stillwell Harrison
Elias S. Harrison first appeared in the 1840 Federal Census of Prairie Ronde Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan.  He lived three households away from his father, Bazel Harrison, and next door to his in-laws, Fred and Hannah Sager.  Elias' surname was later recorded as "Stilwell" in the 1850 Federal Census of Metomen Township, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, page 336.  In a study of the 1850 Federal Census of Fairwater, Wisconsin, his age was also incorrectly interpreted as "71", it actually read 41:

Ten years later, in the 1860 Federal Census of Central Point, Goodhue County, Minnesota, Elias S. Harrison was enumerated on page 112, recorded on 27 July 1860:

#996 922     Elias S. Harrison     52     m     Farming        3600 300     O.

All the children, including William, had attended school in the last year.  There are references to Elias running a hotel.  Living next door in the 1860 census was Albert Taicy, age 24, born in Michigan, and Harriet P. Taicy, age 26, born in N.Y., family.  Albert's occupation is shown as a "Hotel Keeper".  So Elias did at least live near a hotel, perhaps in the next few years, before his death, he assisted with running it.

Elias filed at least two requests for bounty land in Wisconsin and Minnesota.  In 1868 a Bounty Land Claim was filed by Maria Doane, his widow, who was remarried to Charles Doane and was the guardian of their two youngest children, James and Martha Harrison (Maria was living in Florence, Goodhue County, Minnesota in the 1870 census--see below under her granddaughter Augusta Chapman).  From the 1880 Federal Census of Maxville, Buffalo County, Wisconsin, ED# 88, page 228C:

#54  54    Doane, Charles A.    m    49                 Farmer                New York
                                Maria     f     51    wife       Keeping house           "
Gussie     f     11    adopted  going to school    Minesota [sic]
Cadoo, Harmon T.    m    26    servant   farm laborer        New York

Living next door to the Charles and Maria Doane family in 1880, was the Thomas and Irena June Cadoo family, relationship undetermined to Harmon.  Harmon (or Herman) later became the third husband of Martha (Harrison) Vining, according to information submitted by Gerry Marose and Robert Aurandt (see below).

Elias' son, Frederick Harrison, stated that his father Elias was born in 1807, and his mother, Mary Elizabeth, died in childbirth, and shortly thereafter his father married the family hired girl, Maria Gardner.  He said his parents homesteaded on Section 2 in Kalamazoo County, Michigan in April 1830, registered stock in Brady Township, in March 1831, and from there acquired 80 acres in Prairie Ronde in 1833.  Frederick also stated his father explored Prairie City, Iowa (a Sager-Harrison settlement in eastern Iowa in 1846) returned to Michigan, and shortly thereafter moved to Fairwater, Wisconsin in the fall of 1848.  They resided their until 1853, at which time the family moved back to Kalamazoo County, Michigan.  Frederick said he remained in Michigan, however, his brothers and father went to Harrisonville, Iowa, and from their on to Minnesota, where Elias died unexpectedly of a heart attack after a day of clearing the woods with his axe.

The children of Elias Stillwell Harrison and Mary Elizabeth Sager:

(15.1.1.1)(13.7.1) Frederick Sager Harrison, was born in about December 1829, in Kalamazoo County, Michigan and died in Geneva Township, Van Buren County, on 15 May 1885 (Book B, page 230 #173, Van Buren County Deaths, registered June 5, 1886) his death certificate shows his age as 57y, 5m, 9d.  Frederick is buried in Chambers Cemetery in Geneva Township, Van Buren County, Michigan.  He married Celestine Butler (her name is also shown as "Christine" on her death record) in about 1853.  Celestine was born on 29 June 1837, in Ohio, the daughter of Dolly (Webster) Butler and (unknown) Butler, and died in 1899, in Kalamazoo (according to the Kalamazoo City directory of that year--she resided alone at 133 East Ransom St.).  She was later taken to Kibbie for burial (Kibbie is about 15 miles due East of South Haven, right on the border of Allegan and Van Buren Counties in the township of Geneva).  Dolly Butler, Celestine's mother, later married Coral Byington in Kalamazoo.  Frederick Sager Harrison was raised in Michigan, and went with his father, Elias and family to Iowa, and Wisconsin in the late 1840s.  He returned to Kalamazoo County, in about 1853, and married Celestine.  They had six sons and one daughter.  Celestine's obituary states that Frederick was sick a few months and proceeded her in death 15 years earlier, and from that time on she spent her time living with her children, in particular her son, C.F. Harrison (of Kibbie).  It also mentions that the family was extremely active in the Methodist Church.  Frederick Sager Harrison (Frederick's notes were sent to Keg Harrison in 1879) stated that his father and family were extremely close to the Sager-Harrison side of the family (note--Webb, Lon and Chart Harrison lived and worked in Harrisonville, Iowa settlement).  Prior to their marriage Celestine was living in the home of her stepfather and mother, from the 1850 Federal Census of Ross Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan:

# 2203  2219  Byington, Coral   m      40     farmer       NH
                                   Dolly   f       41                     Vt
                               Julian H.  f       11                     Mich

                  Margaret       “       f       11                     Ohio
                  Solomon       “      m       10                     Ohio
The obituary of Benjamin Butler, Celestine's older brother, from Ionia, Michigan, dated 1914, gives great information on the early Butler family, however, it does not identify their father by name.  In the 1870 Federal Census of Prairie Ronde Township, Kalamazoo County, Frederick and Celestine's household included : Webster, age 14; Alonzo, age 12; Charles age 9; Frederick age 3; and Harriet age 2 (all children were born in Michigan).  In the 1880 Federal Census of Climax, Kalamazoo County, listed Frederick and Celestine, ages 45 and 42 respectively; son, Freddy B., age 14; daughter, Harriet, age 12; Celestine's step-father, Coral Byington, age 69, born in Connecticut; and her step-brother, Israel Byington, age 29, born in Michigan.

(15.1.1.2)(13.7.2) Asia Stillwell Harrison, an infant son, born about 1831, in Brady Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan and died about 1833, in Kalamazoo County, Michigan. He is buried in unmarked grave in Harrison Cemetery, Prairie Ronde Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan (this is the only mention of Asia Stillwell Harrison, obtained from the notes of his brother Frederick Harrison).

(15.1.1.4)(13.7.3) Lavinia or Laura America Harrison, born in about 1836, in Climax Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan (on Alex I's farm; she lived to adulthood, married and had a family).

(15.1.1.4)(13.7.4) William Frances Harrison, born in about 1839, in Kalamazoo County, Michigan.  William married Janette (Unknown).

(15.1.1.5)(13.7.5) Baker Harrison  was born on 4 September 1841, however, his obituary gives his year of birth as 1839.  Baker's biography appears in the "History of Wabasha County", 1920 Version, on page 513, transcribed by Barbara Timm, which includes photos of Baker and his 2nd wife, Mary C. Merrill.  Baker married (1st) Arzilla or "Zilla" Munger, she was born on 20 November 1845 and died on 6 February 1870.  Baker and Zilla had no children.  Baker Harrison does not appear on the 1850 census living with the family, however, he is found in the 1860 Federal Census of Goodhue County, Minnesota living near his father, Elias, in the Samuel Cory household:
Saml. Cory, farmer, 58, Vt.
Sarah, 52, N.Y.
Jacob C., 23, farmer, Mich.
O. S., 21, farmer, Mich.
Laura, 19, Mich
B. Harrison, 20, m, farmer, Mich

Census data contributed by Cathy Gowdy.

Baker Harrison served in G Company, 8th Minnesota Infantry Regiment.  This photo is on file at the Minnesota Historical Society, in the searchable Photograph Collection.  Baker Harrison is buried in Lakewood Cemetery in Lake City, Wabasha County, Minnesota.  Gerald Marose contributed this photo of his grave.  Mary is also buried in Lakewood Cemetery.  Baker and Mary's children were:
(15.1.1.5.1)(13.7.5.1) Laura Harrison, born on 9 June 1872 and died on 13 February 1873.

(15.1.1.5.2)(13.7.5.2) Charles B. Harrison, was born on 7 October 1875.  He married Minnie M. Burg, on 23 December 1899, the daughter of Louis and Sabra Burg.  Minnie was born on 12 May 1875 and died in 1959.  His biography also appears in the "History of Wabasha County", 1920 Version, on page 513, transcribed by Barbara Timm.  They are both also buried in Lakewood Cemetery.  Their two children were:

(15.1.1.5.2.1)(13.7.5.2.1) Claude H. Harrison was born on 17 December 1902 and died in April 1970.  He married Esther S. (unknown), she was born on 26 July 1905 and died in August 1977.  They are also buried in Lakewood Cemetery.  They had at least one daughter:
(15.1.1.5.2.1.1)(13.7.5.2.1.1) Joan R. Harrison born in 1934 and died in 1935.  She is also buried in Lakewood Cemetery.
(15.1.1.5.2.2)(13.7.5.2.2) Ruth Harrison born on 31 May 1906.

(15.1.1.6)(13.7.6) John Harrison, was born about 1842, in Kalamazoo County, Michigan.  John married Margaret (unknown).  From the 1870 and 1880 census data it is unclear whether his middle initial is an "H" or an "S".  In the 1870 Federal Census of Florence, Goodhue County, Minnesota, Post Office Red Wing, enumerated on 2 September, page 14 his household listed:

#100 101    Harrison, John H.    28    m    Laborer           Michigan
Margaret     21    f     Keeps house    England
Henry          4    m    at home          Minnesota

                            Lovina E.      1    f     at home          Minnesota

In the 1880 Federal Census of Altona, Pipestone County, Minnesota, ED# 221, page 267C, enumerated on the 1st and 2nd of June, the John S. Harrison household listed:

#3437  Harrison, John S.    m    38                   Farmer                      Mich
Maggie     f     28    Wife        Keeps House              London, Eng.

(15.1.1.7)(13.7.7) George Melchoir Harrison, was born in about 1843, in Kalamazoo County, Michigan (note--Melchoir is a Sager family name with German origins).

After Mary Elizabeth (Sager) Harrison's death in 1845, Elias Stillwell Harrison married (2nd) Maria or Mariah Gardner.  Maria's mother was supposedly related to the Butler family, who became extremely intermingled with the Sager's and the Harrison's.  Elias's brother-in-law, (15.1.10) Abraham Merle Sager I married Mehitable Powers, the daughter of Israel Powers and Altana Butler (it has been suggested that Maria Gardner's mother was either a niece or a sister to Altana, however, further documentation is needed).  All those mentioned were from the same community in New York.  Supposedly, Frederick Sager Harrison's wife, Celestine Butler, is of this same tribe, and their is mention that Laura America Harrison, also married into this clan.  (**Note Keg Harrison stated their was a portrait of Elias & Mary Elizabeth submitted to Prairie Ronde Library, this note was written in about 1911-1912).  Mariah or Maria as her name appears on Bounty Land Claims, married Charles Doane after the death of Elias Stillwell Harrison.  She is listed as Maria Doane the guardian of James and Martha below.  Maria Gardner was born in about 1828.  Her brother, John Gardner, is also buried in Lakewood Cemetery.

The children of Elias Stillwell Harrison and his (2nd) wife Maria Gardner:

(13.7.8) James M. Harrison  was born on 2 April 1848 and died on 3 February 1917 (obituary).   From "History of Wabasha County", Minnesota published in 1884:

"James M. Harrison, farmer, Mazeppa, is a son of Elias S. and Maria (Gardner) Harrison, of Pennsylvania, and was born in Schoolcraft, Michigan, April 2, 1848. The father (now deceased) settled with his family at Center Point, near Lake City, in July, 1852. He erected the first hotel building there, where he died in July, 1863. The subject of this sketch attended the common school there till the death of his father. He then came to Mazeppa, and attended one term here. Farming has always been his vocation. July 27, 1867, he married Phoebe Ann Youngs, daughter of John Youngs, elsewhere mentioned. Mr. Harrison is tilling rented land. He is a member of Mazeppa Lodge, I.O.O.F., and is a republican."
Phoebe Youngs was born in May 1848 in New York and died in July 1927.  According to his marker in Mazeppa Cemetery, in Mazeppa, Minnesota, James served in Co. A, 6th Minnesota Infantry Regiment.  In the 1870 Federal Census of Mazeppa, Wabasha County, Minnesota, page 16 their household listed:

#131 133    Harrison, James    21    m    Farmer               Michigan
Phebe    22     f     Keeping House    New York
Elias        2    m    At Home             Minnesota

In the 1900 census Phoebe stated that she had given birth to 2 children, both of whom were not living.  From the 1870 and 1900 census data, they had two children:

(13.7.8) Elias Harrison, born in about 1868, probably died before 1880.
(13.7.8) Unknown.

(13.7.9) Martha E. Harrison, was born in November 1846 (according to the 1900 census below; her birth is listed as both 1848 and 1845 on the Bounty Land Claims; however the dates are difficult to read; the 1848 date would match her age in the 1850 Federal Census, 1851 would match the 1860 Census) in Wisconsin.  She died on 4 April 1920 in St. Paul, Minnesota.  Martha is buried in in Riverview Cemetery in West St. Paul, Minnesota under the name of "Mrs. H.T. Cadoo".  Her son, Harrison Vining, is buried next to her.  Martha married (1st) Daniel W. Chapman, they had two children:
(13.7.9.1) Augusta Chapman, was born in September 1868.  In the 1870 Federal Census of Florence, Post Office Red Wing, Goodhue County, Minnesota, page 13, Augusta was age 1 year, living in household #86 of 87 with her grandparents, Charles Doane, age 39, born in New York, and Maria Doane, age 41 born in New York.  Also in the household was Hettie Gardner, age 88, born in Massachusetts.  I could not locate Augusta in the 1880 census.  In the 1900 Federal Census of Osakis Township, Douglas County, Minnesota, ED# 47, sheet 15A, she was living with her unmarried brother (Augusta stated that she had been married for 15 years--her husband was not listed; she also stated that she had given birth to 3 living children--only James was listed in the household):
#267 295 Chapman, Adelbert Head Sept 1872 27 Minn York State Indiana Stone Mason
Cadoo, Augusta   Sister Sept 1868 31 Minn  New York Minnesota House Keeper
James    Son   March 1885 15 Wisconsin Minn Minn at School
Also listed in the 1900 Federal Census of Osakis Township, Douglas County, Minnesota, ED# 47, sheet 7B was (Horace stated that he had been married for 16 years--his wife was not listed):
#143 164  Cadoo, Horace Head Sept 1861 38 Minnesota Minnesota Illinois Day Laborer
Ada M.  Daughter May 1886 14 Minnesota Minnesota  Minnesota   at school
George F.    Son      Feb 1892   8 Minnesota Minnesota  Minnesota   at school
Cornish, Hilinia Boarder March1861 39 Minnesota New York  New York House Keeper
Horace W. Cadoo, was listed in the household of his parents, Thomas and Irena June Cadoo in the 1880 Federal Census of Maxville, Buffalo County, Minnesota.  The Cadoo family was living next door to Charles and Maria Doane in 1880 (although I haven't proven it yet, I believe that Horace W. and Herman T. Caddo were brothers).

I did not locate Augusta in the 1910 census, however an Augusta Cadoo did file a land patent in North Dakota, issued on 19 December 1914.  The patent can be viewed at The Bureau of Land Management.  Additionally her sons, James H. Cadoo, George F. Caddo and a Mable R. Cadoo and Augusta's husband, Horace W. Cadoo also all filed land patents in North Dakota.  In the 1910 Federal Census of the city of Williston, Williston Township, Williams County, North Dakota, ED# 221, sheets 10B and 11A, listed the following household (address listed as 419 Third Avenue West; James and Agnes both stated that they had been married for 5 years; Agnes stated that she had given birth to 2 living children):

#22 23  Cadoo, James A. Head 25  Wisconsin  Wisconsin  Wisconsin Clerk General Store

George F.  Brother   18  Minnesota Minnesota Minnesota Engineer Williston Mills
(13.7.9.2) Adelbert Chapman, was born in September 1872 in Minnesota.
Martha and Daniel Chapman later divorced.  Daniel W. Chapman then married Laura Dickson who was a half Native American.  Laura’s father was referred to as Grandpa Dickson, he is buried in Pine Island, Minnesota.  Daniel W. Chapman and Laura Dickson had at least three sons, one of whom was Winifred E. Chapman (more family data is linked from Martha Harrison's name above--Winifred later married Jessie Adell Vining, the daughter of Martha Harrison and her second husband Horace Vining).  Martha married (2nd) Horace "Oscar" Vining, he was born on 27 February 1847 and died on 19 November 1885, he was gored by a bull on the family farm.  Horace was the son of David H. and Rocksy S. (Edwards) Vining; they are both buried in the Vining Family Cemetery south of Frontenac, Goodhue County, Minnesota.  Oscar is also buried in the Vining Family Cemetery (there is also an online transcription of the cemetery).  Martha was said to have smoked a corncob pipe, but always hid it in her apron when company came.  Martha always claimed that she was related to the President’s Harrison.  In the 1880 Federal Census of Florence, Goodhue, Minnesota, ED# 161, page 311A, (a few households away from their Whipple cousins and two households away from the Edward and Delia Vining family) their household listed:

#8  8    Vinning, Oscar H.   m   31                   Farmer             Pennsylvania

In the 1900 Federal Census of St. Paul, 8th Ward, Ramsey County, Minnesota, ED# 131, sheet 6A, their household listed (Martha and Herman both stated that they had been for 13 years; Martha also stated that she had given birth to 10 children, 9 of whom were still living):

#97 111 Cadoo, Herman  Head May1855  45 Pennsylvania  Ireland Pennsylvania  teamster

Martha Harrison was married a (3rd) time to Herman Twichel Cadoo, he was born on 26 May 1854 and died after 1900 (see the 1880 Census Doane family household data at the top of the page).  Herman was a hired hand on the Oscar Vining farm when Oscar was killed by a bull.  Herman Cadoo was sort of a self-proclaimed minister and he married his stepdaughter, Jessie Adell Vining to Harry H. Aurandt.

Martha Harrison family data contributed by Gerry Marose and Robert Aurandt.

(13.7.10) Mehitable Mariah Harrison, born about 1855.
