Descendants of Jeremiah Roe II Listed below are the descendants of of Jeremiah Roe II.  Jeremiah was born on 10 November 1783 and was married five times and fathered 27 children.

He married (1st) Jane Grove, the daughter of "Mannley" Grove ("he was the son of an Indian lady whose name or her mother's name is recorded in family records as "Dancing Sun").  Jane died in about 1825, in Delaware County, Ohio.  He married (2nd) Ann Borum, (3rd) Ursula Jane Selbee, (4th) Polly Whitcomb and (5th) Hannah Rice.  Jeremiah was the son of Jeremiah Roe I.

*1783, Born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

*1809,  Taxed in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania as a "freeman", he did not appear on the tax rolls of 1810.  Their is however, a "J Roe" listed in the 1810 Federal Census of Huntingdon County, PA.

*1813, Fayette County, Ohio.

*1820 Recorded in Wayne Township, Fayette County, Ohio, 1820 Federal Census as "Jeremiah Rowe Jr.", his father was enumerated as "Jeremiah Rowe Sr" in the same township.

*1825, Listed among the settlers of Mill Creek Township, Union County, Ohio.

*1826, Delaware County, Ohio.

*1830, Listed in the 1830 Federal Census in Mill Creek Township, Union County, Ohio.

*1832, Among the first settlers in Adams County, Indiana, he and his brothers held county committee seats.  He had been to that county several times, before arriving there permanently in Spring of 1832 (Note: Columbia Harrison had come in 1830, before he brought his family)  Jeremiah, was a treasurer there and half brother, Joel Roe helped lay out the town of Decatur.

*1840, Possible exploration into Eastern Iowa, ands returns to Indiana.

*1854, Relocates to Kalamazoo County, Michigan, in the Climax Township area.

*1864, Died--Mary "Polly" Whitcomb filed his probate (File # 1081) and appears to have been his last legal wife (however, it is thought that Hannah Rice was his Common Law wife as there are children with the Rice name that appear to be included as "family").  On 27 Mar 1866;  "Mary Roe, the widow, then residing in Allen County, Indiana, filed a petition for the appointment of an administrator for the estate of the said Jeremiah described as being late of the town of Comstock, County of Kalamazoo, who died on or about August 15, 1864. His heirs at law are listed as:

"Catherine Harrison, of Decatur, County of Adams, State of Indiana aged fifty yrs.; George Roe, aged 24 years, Maria Sager aged twenty-six yrs.;  Nancy Gorsline, aged 40 years of Pine Creek, in the County of Calhoun & State of Michigan; Elizabeth Harrison, forty seven yrs.; Martha Roe, age 21; Peggy Selby, forty-five yrs.; Jeremiah Roe, Jr., age 46 years; Simeon Roe, age thirty-five; Frederick Roe age thirty-three years; Noah Roe, age thirty one yrs.; Hiram Roe, age twenty-three years of the County of Kalamazoo in the State of Michigan; and Joseph Roe, aged thirty-seven yrs. of the County of Adams, State of Indiana."

He was still listed in the 1881 Kalamazoo Directory for Comstock, showing 147 acres in sections, 21-22 (see also the remarks at the bottom of the page).


The children of Jeremiah Roe II and (1st) Jane Grove:
(1.3.1) Catherine Mary "Kate" Roe, born on 2 August 1811, in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania and died on 28 October 1878 in St. Marys Township, Adams County, Indiana.  She is buried in Old Mt. Tabor Cemetery, in Adams County, Indiana. She married (15.7) Columbia Ephraim Harrison.


(1.3.2) Elizabeth Jane "Bett"/"Betsey" Roe, born on 14 February 1813, in Wayne Township, Fayette County, Ohio and died on 18 November 1887, in Climax Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan.  She is buried on her farm in Harrison Cemetery, in Climax Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan.  She married (15.8) Alexander Jordan Harrison I on 2 January 1830, in Union County, Ohio.


(1.3.3) Perry Roe, born about 1815, in Wayne Township, Fayette County, Ohio.


This photo of Jeremiah Roe III, better known as "Mize."  He was the son of Jeremiah Roe II and his first wife, the brother of Catherine and Bett (Roe) Harrison, and the father of Mrs. Alexander (Mary Em Roe) Harrison II.  This photo was taken circa 1869.  Mize lived with his sister, Bett and Alex I, due to health problems.

(1.3.4) Jeremiah "Mize" Roe III, born on 7 December 1819, in Wayne Township, Fayette County, Ohio and died on 17 February 1881, in Climax Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan.  He is buried in Harrison Cemetery, in Climax Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan.  He married Mary "Polly" Hill on 27 July 1840, in Kalamazoo County, Michigan.  She was born on 20 May 1823, in Concord Township, Delaware County, Ohio the daughter of Joseph Hill and Catherine Hornand.  "Polly" died on 12 March 1855, in Root Township, Adams County, Indiana.  She is buried in Union Chapel Cemetery, in Root Township, Adams County, Indiana.


(1.3.5) Margaret "Peggy" Roe, was born in 1823, in Wayne Township, Fayette County, Ohio.  She married George W. Selby on 25 July 1840, in Adams County, Indiana.  George was born in 1813, in Botetourt County, Virginia, the son of Charles Selbee.  Charles Selbee (1773-1865) was married three times, (1st) Mary Gano, married (2nd) Mary Brannon and (3rd) Martha Farnum.  The list of children comes from a Bible owned by Charles' grandson, Harrison DeHart "Hart" Selbee.  His descendants in British Columbia own this Bible today.  George Selby died on 20 January 1885 in Salem, Allegan County, Michigan.  His death record states that he was age 73 years, 1 month and 3 days old (Ledger page 19, #584).

George's family took the spelling of Selby.  His brother, Newton Selbee married (15.8.4) Eliffia Harrison, and Newton and Charles' older sister, Ursula Jane Selbee was married to Jeremiah Roe II.  George and Peggy moved with their family from Adams County, Indiana to Kalamazoo County, Michigan in 1853, settling in the Wakeshma Township area.


(1.3.6) Michael Victor Roe, born in about 1825, in Delaware County, Ohio (uncertain of his name).


The children of Jeremiah Roe II and (2nd) Ann Borum:

(1.3.7) Nancy Roe, born on 11 January 1826, in Delaware County, Ohio and died on 27 February 1886, in Calhoun County, Michigan.  She is buried in Gilson Cemetery, in Climax Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan.  She married Charles W. Gorsline on 12 September 1845.  Charles was born in 1819 in Ohio and died in 1893.  He is also buried in Gilson Cemetery.


(1.3.8) Joseph Roe, born in 1829, in Union County, Ohio.  He married Martha Jane "Jane" Whitcomb.  She was born in 1832 in Indiana the daughter of Polly Whitcomb Roe.  Jane was raised by Jeremiah Roe II.


(1.3.9)  Thomas Simeon "Sim" Roe, born in 1831, in Union County, Ohio and died on 9 October 1889, at Valley View farm near Galusville, Texas.  He married Frances Loretta "Lorette" Powers on 16 August 1855, in Climax Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan.  "Lorette" was born on 19 March 1838, in Trumbull, Ohio and died on 2 May 1905, in Kalamazoo County, Michigan.  She is buried in Gilson Cemetery, in Climax Township, Michigan.  This family visited Harrisonville, Iowa, and in 1881, removed to Galusville, Texas, where they settled on a large farm known as "Valley View."  Sim died in 1889, and the family moved back to Scotts, Michigan.  Frances wrote poetry for all the Harrison and Roe family occasions.  She was very active in life until a few years before her death when she went to visit her husband's grave and had a stroke resulting in paralysis from which she never entirely recovered.  Their children were:

(1.3.9.1) Charles Roe, married Eva Wright (the sister of John Andrew Wright who married (15.8.5.2/15.1.13.2) Henrietta Ann Sager.  Charlie and Eva had a large family of 16 children.


(1.3.9.2) Thomas "Ate" Roe.

(1.3.9.4) Jeremiah Roe, died at birth.


(1.3.9.5) Florence N. Roe, died on 3 February 1872, at age 7 years 8 months 6 days.  She is buried in Gilson Cemetery.


(1.3.9.6) (an adopted daughter).


(1.3.10) Frederick Roe, born on 14 September 1832, in Adams County, Indiana and died on 28 November 1909, in Climax Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan.  He is buried in Gilson Cemetery.  He married Alice Gilson on 2 July 1854.  Alice was born in July 1840, in Michigan and died in 1917.  She is also buried in Gilson Cemetery.


(1.3.11) Mariah Roe, was born on 5 September 1834, in Adams County, Indiana and died on 1 June 1897, in Kalamazoo County, Michigan.  She married (15.1.15) Bazel Harrison Sager.


(1.3.12) Noah Roe, was born on 25 June 1835, in Adams County, Indiana (his tombstone reads 1838; in the 1900 Federal Census of Climax Township, Kalamazoo, Michigan, ED# 106, sheet 3A, he listed his birth as June 1838) and died on 12 November 1903.  He is buried in Gilson Cemetery, in Climax Township, Michigan.  He married Adeline "Addie" Rosanna Powers.  She was born in May 1840, in Kalamazoo County, Michigan and died in 1919.  She is also buried in Gilson Cemetery.  Addie and Frances Powers Roe were relatives and closely related to the Powers who married into the Sager family.  Their children were:

(1.3.12.1) Lewis Roe, was born in about 1860, in Kalamazoo County, Michigan (spelled "Louis" in 1880).


(1.3.12.2) Tom Roe, was born in about 1862, in Kalamazoo County, Michigan (not listed in the 1880 household).


(1.3.12.3) Nelson A. Roe, was born in 1865, in Kalamazoo County, Michigan and died in 1891.  He is buried in Gilson Cemetery (he is not listed in the 1870 household, but is listed in the 1880 household at age 15).


(1.3.12.4) Noah Deo Roe, born in 1867, in Kalamazoo County, Michigan and died in 1899.  He is buried in Gilson Cemetery.  He married Minnie Beard.  She was born in 1871 and died in 1961.  She is also buried in Gilson Cemetery.


(1.3.12.5) Sumner G. Roe, born in 1869, in Kalamazoo County, Michigan and died in 1940.  He is buried in Gilson Cemetery.  He married  (1st) Ellen E., in 1892.  Ellen was born in 1866 and died in 1937.  She is also buried in Gilson Cemetery.  He married (2nd) Ida M.  Ida was born in 1875 and died in 1947 and is buried in Gilson Cemetery.  Sumner had spent some time in Harrisonville, Iowa and Gordon, Nebraska.  He did not have any children.  His farm was located in Scotts, Michigan and his death was attributed to over exertion from herding calves on his farm.


(1.3.12.6) Donna Roe, born in October 1874, in Kalamazoo County, Michigan.  She married Martin Harrison in 1899.  Martin was the son of Garrett Harrison and Eleanor Jones, the grandson of Joseph Harrison II and Lydia Ann Roe.  Martin and Donna lived and farmed near Scotts, Michigan. They had one daughter.  Martin and family also lived in Harrisonville, Iowa and Gordon, Nebraska.  Their daughter was:

(1.3.12.6.1) Dortha Harrison Shurlow.

Jeremiah Roe II married (3rd) Ursula Jane Selbee on 25 July 1840, in Adams County, Indiana.  Ursula was the daughter of Charles Selbee.

The children of Jeremiah Roe II and (3rd) Ursula Jane Selbee:

(1.3.13) George Roe, born in 1842, in Adams County, Indiana.  He married Sarah Davis in about 1864.  Sarah was born in 1846, in Michigan.  They farmed in Wakeshma Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan.  Their known children were:

(1.3.13.1) Ursula Roe, born in 1865, in Kalamazoo County, Michigan.


(1.3.13.2) Frank Roe, born in 1869, in Kalamazoo County, Michigan and died in 1943.  He is buried in North Fulton Cemetery.


(1.3.14)  Hiram Roe, born in July 1842, in Adams County, Indiana  and died on 10 December 1918, in Wakeshma Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan.  He is buried in North Fulton Cemetery, in Wakeshma Township, Michigan.  He married Susan Jane Hunt on 15 May 1872.  Susan was born on 17 November 1851, in Delaware County, Ohio and died in 1914, in Wakeshma Township, Michigan.  She is also buried in North Fulton Cemetery.  Susan was the daughter of Joseph and Catherine Hunt.  Hiram farmed in Wakeshma Township, Kalamazoo County.  He visited Iowa, Nebraska, and Texas, however always returned to his farm in Michigan.  They were very active in the United Brethren Church.  Their children were:

(1.3.14.1) Melvin Roe, born in January 1875, in Kalamazoo County, Michigan.  He married Lizzie in 1898.  Lizzie was born in February 1876, in Michigan.


(1.3.14.2) Wilbur N. Roe, born in November in 1876, in Kalamazoo County, Michigan and died in 1918.  He is buried in North Fulton Cemetery.  Wilbur married  Lottie in 1896.  Lottie was born in 1879, in Michigan.  In 1920 she was widowed and living in Athens Township, Calhoun County, ED# 35, sheet 8A.  Also listed in the 1920 household was her son, Ovid F., age 7, and an "uncle", Frank Hunt.  Frank and Lottie were later married (see below under Ovid).  She is also buried in North Fulton Cemetery.  Their children were:

(1.3.14.2.1) Victor L. Roe, was born in August 1897 in Michigan and died in 1961.  He is buried in North Fulton Cemetery.  Victor was married in the 1930 Federal Census of Battle Creek, Calhoun County, Michigan, ED# 31, sheet 8B.  He and his wife, Cleo M., age 32, birthplace Indiana, had 1 daughter, Eleanor M., age 5 years.  Victor's occupation was listed as the owner of a gas station.


(1.3.14.2.2) Donald Roe, was born in about 1899 in Michigan.


(1.3.14.2.3) Ovid Franklin Roe, was born in about 1912 in Michigan.  His name was recorded as Ovid F. Roe, in 1930, listed as a step-son of Frank and Lottie P. Hunt in Athens Township, Calhoun County, Michigan, ED# 9, sheet 3A.  Ovid is listed in the Michigan Death Index 1971-1996, date of birth listed as 28 March 1912, date of death 17 October 1996, place of death and residence listed as Athens Township, Calhoun County, Michigan.


(1.3.14.3) Everett Roe, died on 23 September 1881, he is buried in North Fulton Cemetery.


(1.3.14.4) Howard Roe, born on 8 January 1887, in Kalamazoo County, Michigan and died on 22 June 1965.  He is buried in North Fulton Cemetery. He married Mary R. "Matie" Martin in about 1906.  "Matie" was born on 9 February 1889 and died on 8 February 1972.  She is also buried in North Fulton Cemetery.  Howard and Mary had one son in 1910, Harold, age 2 years (1910 Federal Census, Wakeshma Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, ED# 166, sheet 4B).


(1.3.15) Martha Roe, born on 23 January 1845, in Adams County, Indiana and died on 22 February 1871.  She is buried in Gilson Cemetery.  She married Nat R. Hakes.  They had no children.


Jeremiah Roe II married (4th) Polly Whitcomb.  They had no children together, and appear on the 1850 Federal Census in Root Township, Adams County, Indiana.  Polly's return gives her birth in about 1798 in New York, and three additional children are listed besides the last 7 listed above in birth order, namely: Martha age 11, and Edward Whitcomb age 8, both were born in Indiana; and Jane Titus, age 16, born in Ohio (she later married (15.8.2) Jeremiah "Wig" Harrison).  Mrs. Whitcomb and Jeremiah may have later divorced.

Jeremiah Roe II married (5th) Hannah  Rice (this was probably a "Common Law" marriage).  In the 1860 Federal Census of Climax Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, Jeremiah returns age 77, and his fifth wife, Hannah, returns age 53, born in about 1807 in Pennsylvania.  The children were shown as: George age 19, Hiram age 17, Martha age 16, and two others--unknown how they fit in to the family: Will R. age 12 and Hiram E. age 10.   Jeremiah III  is also listed, age 44, and two of his children, Mary age 13 and Jerry R. age 8.  Hannah was said to have remained with Jeremiah until he died.  Interestingly, Mary Roe, is listed as his widow and was residing in Allen County, Indiana on March 27th, 1866.
