John Ake and Permilla Harrison
The Ake family data is based on information from Our Ake History, a family manuscript written by Carol Mock and Iona Corle, copied from the Pioneer Library in Bedford County, Pennsylvania.  A copy of the Ake Family cemetery record was included in the manuscript (see image below).  The first generation listed by Carol and Iona is in agreement with the will of John Ake.  An addtional note for descendants, this line is accepted by the Daughters of the American Revolution.

The Trout family data is based on information from The Trout Family and Related Families from Blair and Bedford Counties, PA., Including the Ake, Harrison and Smith Forebears", compiled by Mary Dannehower Trout and her husband Thomas James Trout, dated October 1975.

I have verified subsequent generations with census records.  I renumbered the children, using Justin Herbst's numbering system (see the Table of Contents for an explanation).  Permella "Emealy" Harrison is also mentioned in the will of her brother Zephaniah Harrison and as "Ameila" Ake in the Archives of Maryland; volume 71, from State Council records dated 1785.

At the Berks County Historical Society in Reading, Pennsylvania, Helen Arkey's book, "A Compilation of Eck Families Primarily Listing Descendants of Jacob Egg/Eck and Anna Marie Kilcher"; published in 1992 and revised in 1998; lists the John and Pamela (Harrison) Ake family on page 70.  Arkey shows Josiah Harrison and Elizabeth Holland as the parents of Pamela Harrison.  None of the references listed in Helen Arkey's work prove that her parents were Josiah and Elizabeth (Holland) Harrison.  Permella's marriage is actually listed twice in Arkey's work; the same marriage is shown on page 404 for Johannes Eck and "Mealry" Harrison, married on 7 January 1783 in Frederick County, Maryland.  This Johannes Eck is shown as the son of Matthias Eck, an immigrant, who arrived in America on 23 September 1752 on the ship St. Andrews, in the city of Philadelphia.  This marriage, in Frederick County, Maryland, is listed in "Frederick Maryland, Lutheran Marriages and Burials 1743-1811", translated and edited by Frederick Sheeley Weiser, published by the National Genealogical Society, fourth printing 1993, page 33.  It is also the same marriage Arkey listed for John Ake/Eck and Pamela Harrison on page 70.

The fact that "Emealy" is mentioned in her brother, Zephaniah's will, confirms that Josiah Harrison was her brother, but does not prove her parentage.  Several Ake researchers have listed Permella's parents as Josiah and Elizabeth (Holland) Harrison, along with some of her siblings.  Most have listed Helen Arkey as a reference, however, in Helen's defense, she never listed any siblings or additional information on the Harrison family.  The addition of any other Harrison family data was never based on fact or referenced from a primary source.  Admittedly, I also do not have a primary source that shows Permella's father was William Harrison, however, "Amelia" is listed in the biography of her half brother Judge Bazel Harrison, along with her siblings, the primary references listed above link her to this family.  Bazel's half brothers and sisters according to Bazel Harrison's biography in 1874 were:

"The names of his brothers and sisters who grew up were as follows: William, Josiah, Kinzie, Grovier, Samuel, James, Zepheniah, Sarah, Phœbe and Amelia, half brothers and sisters, children of his father by his first wife..."
Additionally Mary Dannehower Trout and her husband Thomas James Trout, in their compilation listed the following primary sources:
"At the request of John Ake, the following indenture was recorded 12-4-1819.  Zephaniah Harrison, son of Josias Harrison of Frederick Co. gives his bond to convey to John Ake of Bedford Co. Pa. 100 acres of land devised to Zephaniah Harrison son of Josias Harrison by Zephaniah Harrison in his will.  John Ake passes his bond to convey to Zephaniah son of Josias, 100 acres of land in Huntingdon Co. Penna. now in possession of John Cadwallader, to be consummated whenever Zephaniah shall come to Penna."

(Above) Fred. Co. Deed Book JS10 P 126

"Zephaniah Harrison of Fred. Co. purchased this tract in said county from Andrew Biddle, 11-24-1797.  This was called "Hazzard and Never Fear", named in will.  Later in 1801 he sold part of this tract to William Webb."

"Family tradition states that Pamilia Harrison [Pamilia is the version of her name from the Trout manuscript] had a brother "Kins".  From the records of the Veterans Bureau...." (the manuscript continues and lists Kinsey Harrison's pension record)."  "Further records of Anne Arundel Co. Maryland show-:
"Know ye by these presents that I Kinsey Harrison of Ann Arundel Co. and Zephaniah Harrison of same for the sum of 150 pounds current money paid by said Zephaniah Harrison, have sold unto him all goods household furniture etc. in the schedule following: livestock, wheat and corn------all being now in possession of said Zephaniah Harrison".

          Kinsey (his X mark) Harrison"

Ann Arundel Co. Md. Deed Book H.S. No. X11 P 444.

"The foregoing disclosed Kinsey had no realty."

I have made additional annotations in Carol Mock and Iona Corle's "First Generation" if dates/names/places differ from  Helen Arkey's book and the same for the Trout manuscript.  John Ake was first identified in Pennsylvania in the 1800 Federal Census of Woodberry Township, Huntingdon County:

Two names of interest also appear in the 1800 Federal Census of Woodberry Township, Denton Moberly and Andrew Biddle.  Denton Moberly is also mentioned in the will of Zephaniah Harrison, and Andrew Biddle (father of Sarah Biddle, wife of Zephaniah Harrison).  A John Trout also appears as early as 1800, in Morris Township, Huntingdon County, 1 male 16-26 and 1 female 16-26.  This would indicate that Elizabeth Ake, John and Permella's oldest daughter was already married when the 1800 census was taken.  The earliest deed located at the Huntingdon County Courthouse was granted from Jacob Ake and his wife Catherina to John Ake, in Deed Book I-1, page 300, date of deed 14 April 1800, date of record 22 August 1903.  It does not mention his wife Permella (note--Helen Arkey lists this Jacob Ake as John Ake's older brother).

It is almost impossible to sort out the families in the 1810 Federal Census, names were all recorded with first initials, i.e. "Ake, J."

In the 1820 Federal Census, John Ake, Joseph B. Ake, John Ake, Jr., and a Thomas Green were all living in St. Clair Township, in Bedford County (there was also a Thomas Green listed Dublin Township).  John Trout, along with Peter Green and Britton Pierce, were all living literally side by side, in Antis Township, Huntingdon County.  Their households for the 1820 census are shown on their linked pages (--except for Thomas Green, I could not determine which Thomas Green married Margaret Ake; John Ake and Peter Green's 1820 households are shown below).  John and Permella's 1820 household, St. Clair Township, Bedford County, listed:

Although John and Permella were living in Bedford County in the 1820 census, he did sell property in Huntingdon County after he had relocated his household in Bedford.  In Deed Book R-1, pages 257 and 258, John and Permella Ake, of St.Clair Township, Bedford County, sold land to Nathan Green, date of deed 28 December 1821, date of record 8 January 1822:

Permella signed with her mark, her name is recorded as "Amely Ake".  In Deed Book U-1, pages 31 and 32, John and Permella of St. Clair Township, Bedford County, sold land to "Joseph Ake son of Jacob Ake", of Morris Township, Huntingdon County, date of deed 21 March 1825, date of record 11 April 1826:

On the 1826 deed Permella again signed with her mark, in this instance her name was name was recorded as "Permele Ake."

In the 1830 Federal Census of St. Clair Township, Bedford County, John was recorded as "Ake, John Sen.", his son, Joseph B. was living in the next household.  Both John and Permella's ages were recorded as "Of sixty and under seventy", there was also a female between ten and fifteen years old living in their home.

John Ake and Permella Harrison

"First Generation"
"John Ake  was born in 1760 and died April 5, 1850 age 90 years.  He was a drummer in the Maryland Militia during the Revolutionary War.  John Ake was married on January 7, 1783 in Frederick, Maryland to Permilla Harrison who was born in 1760 and died May 2, 1850 age 90 years and 3 months.  John and Permilla were buried at the Claycomb farm in Weyant.  This information was obtained from cemetery records we have found.  This cemetery no longer exists [see the cemetery record below].  The person who once lived on the farm showed us where he thought it once was.  This is in a field on a small hill on the farm at the wye across from the mill in Weyant which at one time belonged to John Ake.  They had the following children:"

5.1    "Elizabeth Ake married John Trout", there is an Elizabeth Trout, age 68, born in "Pa", is living in Antis Township, Blair County, Pennsylvania, in the 1850 Federal Census, with Nancy Wilson, age 30, also born in "Pa".  Helen Arkey gives Elizabeth's date of birth as 31 March 1784 in Maryland and her date of death as 1 July 1854 in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania.  John and his wife are both buried in Antis Cemetery, near Pinecroft, Blair County, Pennsylvania.  The family Bible of their son, Thomas G. Trout, purchased in 1856, listed the following dates of birth for his parents:
"John Trout cenier wife and Children.  John Trout was born On 2nd of March. A.D. 1781.
Elizabeth Trout was born on the 31st of March. A.D. 1783."

5.2    "Sarah Ake married Britton Pierce", Britton Pierce, age 75, born in "Pa", is living in Union Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, in the 1850 Federal Census, with wife Sarah, age 66, also born in "Pa".  This appears to be a second marriage for Sarah Ake.  In the biography of John Pierce McKnight, it states that his father, Robert McKnight, married Mary McIlwain, who was the daughter of an Ake who later married Britton Pierce.  There is an entry in Will Book 2, page 174, concerning the estate of Moses McIlvain, deceased, administered by John Ake, Jr., dated 22 June 1815.  However, there was no mention of the wife of Moses, or his heirs.

5.3    "Mary Ake married _____ Green", Helen Arkey gives his name as Peter Green.  The 1820 household of Peter Green, Antis Township, Huntingdon County listed:

5.4    "Margaret Ake married _____ Green", Helen Arkey gives his name as Thomas Green.

5.5    "John Ake married Jemima Tipton", Helen Arkey gives John Ake Jr.'s date of death as 4 April 1866, in Union Township, Bedford County.

5.6    "Joseph Ake married Margaret Garn", Helen Arkey gives Joseph's date of birth as 1797 in Huntingdon County and his wife as Margaret Rebecca Garn; died 4 October 1849.
