Listed below are descendants of Elizabeth Ake and John Trout.  Elizabeth was the oldest daughter of John and Permella (Harrison) Ake.  Trout family data is based on DAR National #722467 (name withheld), Huntingdon County Court records, bible records, census records and the biographies of their grandsons Thomas J. Trout, Maybury G. Trout and Thomas J. Burkholder of Blair County, Pennsylvania.

Additionally a family manuscript titled: "The Trout Family and Related Families from Blair and Bedford Counties, PA., Including the Ake, Harrison and Smith Forebears", compiled by Mary Dannehower Trout and her husband Thomas James Trout, dated October 1975, appears throughout these pages in italics.  Abbreviations from the manuscript are as follows:

"b. born, d. died, bd. buried, cem. cemetery, pb. probably, c. or circa, m. married, bap. baptized, dau. daughter, s. son, Co. County.  Dates given as 1-3-1888 are month-day-year in that order."
I have also added records from copies of the Thomas G. Trout family Bible purchased on 5 January 1856, copies of the Bible record were located at the Blair County Genealogical Society in Hollidaysburg, PA.

John Trout first appears in the 1800 Federal Census of Morris Township, Huntingdon County Pennsylvania, with one male age 16-26 and one female age 16-26.  The 1800 census data suggests that they were married prior to 1800, however, John and Elizabeth had no living children listed in their household.  In the 1810 Federal census of Allegheny Township, Huntingdon County their household listed:

The 1840 Federal Census of Antis Township, Huntingdon County, listed an "E. Trout", (possibly Elizabeth, after John Trout's death).  The household consisted of 1 male of twenty and under thirty years; 1 female of fifteen and under twenty years; 1 female of twenty and under thirty years; and 1 female of 60 and under 70 years.  Living next door was "T. Trout", very likely her son, Thomas, listed below.  The next catch of Trout (sorry, I couldn't resist) also all resided in Antis Township, and were recorded on the same page:  a "G. Trout", probably Gideon Trout; a "J. Trout", probably John, Jr.; and a "W. Trout", whom I cannot account for.

John Trout died intestate.  At the Huntingdon County Courthouse, Will Book 4, page 118, Elizabeth Trout released her rights to the estate of John Trout, to be administered by her sons.  Transcribed from Orphans Court Docket F, page 151:

"1844    No. 144    The administration account of Gideon D. and Edward B. Trout, administrators of the estate of John Trout late of Allegheny township, deceased, was presented to the Court for confirmation.  Whereupon 14 August A.D. 1844, it is considered by the Court and ordered that the same be confirmed nisi: 13 Nov. 1844 on motion of S. Calvin Esq., the Court [unreadable] the act. to next term.  And now 15 January A.D. 1845 the said account is confirmed absolutely.
                                                                               By the Court."

In November 1844 Court session, No. 219, appeared Thomas G. Trout, "the fourth son of said intestate", (the first and second sons not appearing and the third appearing but refuses to accept)".  Thomas J. Trout and G.D. [Gideon] Trout finally did come to some agreement and signed on record number 220 in the same November 1844 session to assume their father's debt to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and support their mother, Elizabeth Trout.

Also from the manuscript:

Huntingdon Co.  Orphans Court Dockets Book F p. 96 Dated Apr. 20, 1844.

"Petition of William Valentine, intermarried with Jane Elizabeth Trout, a daughter of John Trout late of Antes Twp."

Letters granted on Dec. 7, 1838.  where upon 1-17-1844 the court issued an order.

Page 129 Petition of Gideon D. Trout and Edward B. Trout, Adm's. of estate of John Trout, stated that:--

"John Trout on or about Nov. 13, 1838 leaving a widow.  Elizabeth and issue eleven children to wit:

Mary Trout intermarried with James Green; John Trout; Joseph Trout; Gideon D. Trout; Amelia Trout intermarried with Jacob Buttonberger; Edward B. Trout; Thomas Trout; Lydia Trout intermarried with John Burkholder; Elizabeth Ann Trout intermarried with Philip Bartlebaugh; Perry G. Trout; Jane Trout int. m. William Valentine.--seized with lands bounded by Thomas Green, Martin Bell and Elias Baker, containing 225 acres, being the same tract purchased from Richard Neave on 6 Aug. 1832."
Elizabeth Trout was enumerated for the last time in the 1850 Federal Census of Antis Township, Blair County, Pennsylvania, recorded on the 9th of October.  Listed on the same page in 1850 were the families of her daughter, Eliza  (Trout) Bartlebaugh, son Thomas G. Trout  and Lydia (Trout) Burkholder:
#226  223    Elizabeth Trout    68    f    " [Pa]
                    Nancy Wilson      30    f    "
From the biography of the grandson of John and Elizabeth Trout, Maybury G. Trout, published in "Twentieth Century History of Altoona and Blair County, Pennsylvania", by Jessie C. Sell, 1911, page 583:
"...a son of Thomas G. and Mary Ann (Smith) Trout, and a grandson of John Trout.  John Trout, who was of English parentage, was born on the Atlantic Ocean and was reared near Port Royal, Va., where his people settled after landing in the United States. In early manhood he located in Antis Township, Blair County, Pa., on a tract of land which he afterwards bought from Edward Bell, who was agent for the Philadelphia owner. John Trout married a Miss Ake, whose mother was a Harrison, and was a sister of William Henry Harrison, once president of the United States."
So, it would seem that the legend concerning the relationship to the James River Harrisons was not just limited to Permella's half brother Bazel Harrison...

John and Elizabeth (Ake) Trout, Antis Cemetery

The children of Elizabeth Ake and John Trout were:

5.1.1 Mary Trout, was born in 1800 in Pennsylvania (she was not listed in the 1800 household of John and Elizabeth Trout).  Her brother Thomas G. Trout's Family Bible (purchased 5 January 1856) listed his sister as:

"Mary Trout was born on the 17th of April A.D. 1800."

"Mary Trout intermarried with James Green".

The Green family is a tough one to research.  Like any common name i.e. Smith, Jones, Harrison, etc., the Green name presents quite a challenge.  That being said, there is a copy of a Green family manuscript, not dated, author unknown, at the Blair County Genealogical Society in Hollidaysburg.  I will add the Green family data at a later date.

5.1.2 Phillip Trout, was born in 1802 in Pennsylvania.  His brother Thomas G. Trout's Family Bible (purchased 5 January 1856) listed his brother as:

"Philip Trout was born on the 15th of January A.D. 1802."

"prob. b. 1802 in Morris Twp. Huntingdon Co. Pa.  Appears in tax lists of 1823, 1824, 1825 of Antis Twp. "as Philip Trout, single," along with John Trout Sr.  Probably died before 1844 Orphans Court listing of children of John trout, deceased."

5.1.3 John Trout, Jr., was born in 1804 in Pennsylvania.  He was enumerated in Antis Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania from 1830-1850.  In 1860 he was recorded in Logan Township, Blair County and lastly in Altoona, 1st Ward, Blair County in the 1870 Federal Census.  He listed his occupation as a farmer through 1860, in 1870 he stated that he was a teamster, at age 65.  His brother Thomas G. Trout's Family Bible (purchased 5 January 1856) listed his brother as:

"John Trout was born on the 1st of December A.D. 1804."

5.1.4 Joseph P. Trout, was born in 1807 in Pennsylvania and apparently died after the 1860 census was recorded.  He married Sarah (DAR National #722467 states that her name was "maybe Jones"), she was also born in about 1809.  The application stated that they were married in about 1833 (the DAR application continues through his son Darius Trout).  Joseph papered to be the entrepreneur of the family, he listed his occupation as a shoemaker in 1850 and in 1860 as an auctioneer.  In 1850 he was living in Allegheny Township, Bedford County, by 1860 he had relocated his family to East Ward Altoona, Blair County.  "...married to Blanch Stains and to Sarah Jones."  His brother Thomas G. Trout's Family Bible (purchased 5 January 1856) listed his brother as:

"Joseph Trout was born on the 15th of September A.D. 1807."

5.1.5 Gideon D. Trout, mentioned in the administration of his father's estate, was born in 1809 in Pennsylvania.  The earliest record of Gideon Trout is the 1840 Federal Census, where he is likely the "G Trout" listed in Antis Township, Huntingdon County (households of note recorded on the same page were the households of: J Green, W Trout, W Ake, P Bartlebaugh and G Trout).  Gideon later relocated his family to St. Clair Township, Bedford County, where he was listed in 1850-1880.  He consistently listed his occupation as a farmer, and was last recorded in 1880 at age 70.  His brother Thomas G. Trout's Family Bible (purchased 5 January 1856) listed his brother as:

"Gideon D. Trout was born on the 9th of August A.D. 1809."

d. 8-14-98 bd. Horn's Methodist Cem. W. of Spring Meadow, Bed. Co. Pa. Elizabeth R. b. 1814 d. Feb. 7-1871 aged 56 yrs. 6 mo. 30 day bd. beside husband."

The Book "History of Bedford County", by E. Howard Blackburn, Vol. two, dated 1906, page 363:

"Spring Meadow, a hamlet N.E. part of E. St. Clair Twp. Bedford Co.  This was all part of Gideon D. Trout's Big Spring Farm.  Within was a store, post office, grist mill, large brick mansion, and several tenement houses, all belonging to the one great farm of Gideon D. Trout.  The store burned, the great spring and lake have been acquired by the state of Penna. for a trout hatchery.  A new mill was erected, the mansion was refurbished by the Hon. John M. Reynolds."

Jacob and Permelia (Trout) Bottenberg, Antis Cemetery

5.1.6 Permelia Trout, was born in 1811 in Pennsylvania.

"Amelia Trout intermarried with Jacob Buttonberger".

His name was Jacob Bottenberg and much like her grandmother, Permella Harrison (the spelling from Archie Claar's cemetery record), her name alternates between various versions of her name throughout her lifetime.  Jacob Bottenberg died in 1869, Permelia died in 1885, they are both buried in Antis Cemetery, near Pinecroft, Blair County, Pennsylvania.  Her brother Thomas G. Trout's Family Bible (purchased 5 January 1856) listed his sister as:

"Emelia Trout was born on the 21st of August A.D. 1811."

5.1.7 Edward B. Trout, was born in 1813 in Pennsylvania.  Edward was listed in Bedford Township, Bedford County in 1850.  He listed his occupation as a farmer.  In 1860 he was living in Bedford Borough, Bedford County, where the value of his real estate was listed as $7,000 and the value of his personal estate was valued as $1,000.  Edward was not listed in the 1870 census and I have been unable to locate his wife Margaret and his children in 1870.

"By 1850 had left Antis and was farming in Bedford Twp. thence to Bedford Town in 1880 [sic, the author must have meant 1860 not 1880] m. Anna Margaret Crissman b.c. 1820. dau. Elizabeth Crissman b.c. 1778.  Anna is listed by 1850 census as "Annable".  The lady age 60-70 living with Edward's family in 1840 [it makes sense that either Elizabeth, Edward's mother, or Edward himself was the "E Trout" listed in  the 1840 census], is undoubtedly his mother Elizabeth Trout who was widowed in 1838."

His brother Thomas G. Trout's Family Bible (purchased 5 January 1856) listed his brother as:

"Edward B. Trout was born on the 3rd of October A.D. 1813."

Thomas G. and Mary A. Trout, Antis Cemetery

5.1.8 Thomas G. Trout, was born in 1815 in Pennsylvania.  An excerpt from the biography of his son, Thomas J. Trout, in "Biographical and Portrait Cyclopedia of Blair County, Pennsylvania; edited by Samuel T. Wiley, 1892 stated:

"Thomas G. Trout, father of subject, was born on the old place in Antis Township, and with the exception of three or four years spent in Bedford County, lived there all his life. He married Mary Ann Smith, who was a native of Bedford County, Pa., and to them were born eight children: William and Compton, both of whom died in infancy; Maybury Goheen; Martin C., who lives in Toledo; Sophia, who is deceased, was the wife of Prof. J. Souder; Margaret, who lives with our subject; Mary, who is the wife of H. O. Kline, of Pittsburg [sic], and Thomas, who is engaged in the insurance business in Altoona. Thomas G. Trout served as constable, when Antis Township was a part of Huntingdon County."
His family Bible listed the following:

"Thomas G. Trout was born August 26th A.D. 1815."
"Mary Ann Smith was born November 9th A.D. 1818."
"Thomas G. Trout and Mary Ann Smith were joined in holy Matrimony January 1st, 1839 by Rev. P. Mcanelly"

John J. and Lydia (Trout) Burkholder, Antis Cemetery

5.1.9 Lydia Trout, was born in 1817 in Pennsylvania.

"Lydia Trout intermarried with John Burkholder".

Lydia married John J. Burkholder.  John listed his occupation as a millwright in 1850 and listed his occupation as a farmer from 186-1880.  They had a large family of eleven children.  John J. Burkholder died in 1885 at 71 years old, Lydia's marker states that she died in 1907.  They are both buried in Antis Cemetery, near Pinecroft, Blair County, Pennsylvania.  Her brother Thomas G. Trout's Family Bible (purchased 5 January 1856) listed his sister as:

"Lidia Trout was born on the 8th of December A.D. 1817."

Philip and Eliza (Trout) Bartlebaugh, Antis Cemetery

5.1.10 Elizabeth Ann Trout, was in 1819 in Pennsylvania and died in 1875.

"Elizabeth Ann Trout intermarried with Philip Bartlebaugh"

Eliza married Philip Bartlebaugh, he was born in 1814 in Pennsylvania and died in 1872.  They are both buried on the family plot in in Antis Cemetery, near Pinecroft, Pennsylvania.

"Eliza" b. Antis Twp. Blair Co. b. 1819 d. 1875 (bd. Antis Burying Gd.) m. Philip Bartlebaugh, b.c. 1815.  farmer in Antis Twp. Blair, Co.  Formerly Allegheny Twp.  Huntingdon, Co. Pa."

Her brother Thomas G. Trout's Family Bible (purchased 5 January 1856) listed his sister as:

"Lizeann Trout was born on the 18th of November A.D. 1819."

5.1.11 Perry G. Trout, was born in 1822 in Pennsylvania.

"possibly [Perry] Green Trout b. 3-26-1821 Antis Twp. d. 3-27-1901.  bd. Bedford Community Cem. Bedford Co. Pa. a farmer.  m. Sarah Schatzer b. 11-24-1821.  d. 12-4-1913 bd. beside husband."

His brother Thomas G. Trout's Family Bible (purchased 5 January 1856) listed his brother as:

"Perry Trout was born on the 26th of March A.D. 1822."

5.1.12 Charles Trout. "This is unconfirmed.  The only evidence is a "Trout Chart" in the genealogical office of the Penna.  State Library."

The authors further explain that Charles could have been a son, and died before the 1844 Orphans Court proceedings.  He was not listed in the family Bible Record of his supposed brother Thomas G. Trout (purchased on 5 January 1856).

5.1.13 Margaret Trout.  Her brother Thomas G. Trout's Family Bible (purchased 5 January 1856) listed his sister as:

"Margaret Trout was born on the 7th of March A.D. 1824."

There was no further mention of Margaret in the manuscript.

5.1.14 Jane Elizabeth Trout, was born in 1825 in Pennsylvania.

"Jane Trout int. m. William Valentine."

Little is known about William and Jane Valentine.  The manuscript written in1975 only included data from the 1850 and 1860 censuses.  In 1850 William listed his occupation as a miner in Antis Township, he was farming in 1860 in Antis Township and in 1870 he listed his occupation as a laborer.  I did locate them in 1870, but no further...

Her brother Thomas G. Trout's Family Bible (purchased 5 January 1856) listed his sister as:

"Jane Elizabeth Trout was born on the 10th December A.D. 1825."
