Washington County Tax Lists Harrison/Stillwell This transcription of Harrison and Stillwell (and variations) names comes from a combination of sources.  Some of the data came from published works at Citizens Library in Washington, Pennsylvania, however the majority of information was found at the Allen County Library in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, by viewing microfilm from the actual tax enumeration's.  Unfortunately, the lists were alphabetical, which gave little information as to neighbors of the taxed households.  I concentrated my efforts only on the records for Somerset and Fallowfield Townships.

Of particular interest is the household of Moses Harrison, listed as a household on the same page as Bazel and Martha Harrison.  The relationship of Moses Harrison to Bazel is unknown.  Moses' return was shown as:

This relationship deserves further investigation.  Joseph and Bathsheba Harrison, Bazel's brother had a son, Moses Isaiah Harrison, who was born about 15 October 1801 in either Virginia or Pennsylvania, this is the first known occurance of the name Moses in the family.  Was the Moses Harrison shown above a cousin, or ?  Additionally, Moses Harrison left Washington County about the same time as Bazel Harrison (see below).  It appears that this Moses Harrison possibly moved to Brooke County, West Virginia (then Virginia), and later into Belmont County, Ohio.  An Ephraim Harrison also appears in the 1810 Federal Census of Brooke County.

The most puzzling or interesting question in the 1800 Federal Census-Where are William and Worlenda (Davis) Harrison? In 1800, Bazel and Joseph's younger brother's Ephraim and Shadrach were probably still living in the household of William and Worlenda.  The tax lists from Washington County below offer an explanation.  In 1800 a William Harris was taxed in Fallowfield Township on a farm consisting of 300 acres, 2 cows and 2 horses.  The 1800 Federal Census of  Washington County also listed a William Harris:

The household of William Harris above, matches the expected household of of William, Worlenda, Ephraim, and Shadrach Harrison.  Also enumertaed in Fallowfield Township were the families of Elias and Jeremiah Stillwell:

Elias Stillwell and his wife were clearly old enough to be the parents of Martha Stillwell.  From the tax lists below Elias Stillwell is also absent from Fallowfield Township in the years 1791-1794 (there were no tax lists for the period of 1795-1799), and he appears again in 1800, when Bazel and Martha Harrison arrive.  Elias Stillwell leaves Washington County after being taxed in 1803.

The following passage from the “History of Washington County, Pennsylvania”, published in 1982, gives some insight to early Fallowfield Township:

“Not much Information is to be gained concerning the primitive business interests of Fallowfield township, save that of the farming and general improvement done by the early settlers.  However, considerable whiskey must have been manufactured in the township and its immediate vicinity, as Mr. Edward West says “that at one period of his life he could stand on the hill where his father’s farm lay and see the smoke from nineteen distilleries in active operation.”  As early as 1783 Fallowfield township paid a State tax which amounted to L50, and it was the only township in Washington County that paid such a tax in that year, the county commissioners in the report of their session held that year stating that “they did exonerate and discharge the inhabitants of each township from the payment of the State tax, for reasons known to them, which amounts to L50.”  Benjamin White was the assessor of Fallowfield township for 1783, Nathan Ellis collector, and the amount of the county tax L94 10s.”
