Zephaniah Harrison, son of Josias Harrison From the will of Zephaniah Harrison, his brother Josias or Josiah Harrison fathered at least one son, Zephaniah Harrison.  Listed below are the descendants of Josias by his son Zephaniah.

Records below were contributed by Marie Mackey and complied by George Russell from "Frederick City Courthouse Records, Pg. 375, Lib J P P # 1, 14 March 1882".  Zephaniah Harrison was the son of Josias Harrison, he was mentioned in the will of his uncle and namesake Zephaniah Harrison, the son of William Harrison.

Descendants of Josias Harrison

4.1 Zephaniah Harrison  was born on 15 November 1795 and died on 26 May 1867 aged 71 years, 6 months and 13 days (according to his cemetery marker).  Zephaniah married Mary Haller on 12 April 1818, and was a veteran of the War of 1812 (according to his son Edward's biography linked below).  Mary was born  on 14 July 1798 and died on 2 January 1882 aged 83 years, 5 months and 19 days (according to her cemetery marker).  They are both buried in section A in Mount Olivet Cemetery, in Frederick, Maryland .  His occupation was listed as a tanner in 1850 and a merchant in 1860.

In the 1830 Federal Census of Frederick County, Maryland his household consisted of:

In the 1850 Federal Census of Frederick town, Frederick County, Maryland, recorded on the 13th of June, his household listed (his son Josiah was listed a few households away):

From the will of Zephaniah Harrison, their children were:

4.1.1 William H. Harrison, was born on 12 January 1819 and died on 3 November 1866 (he was deceased prior to the settlement of his father's will in 1882).  His widow was listed as Sarah A. Harrison.  I did finally locate William and Sarah in the 1860 Federal Census of Cincinnati, 8th Ward, Hamilton County, Ohio, recorded on the 21st of June:

#838 1749 William H. Harrison 41  m  E.L. Minerals 3000  300 Maryland

William probably died before 1870, from the 1870 Federal Census of Cincinnati, Hamilton County, recorded on the 19th of July:

#522  631 Harrison, Sarah A. 40   f  Keeping House 7000 200    Maryland

In the 1880 Federal Census of Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, Sarah A. Harrison headed a household consisting of herself, age 52, born in Maryland (she stated that her father was born in England and her mother was born in Maryland); Charles L. Harrison, age 23, born in Ohio, occupation clerk; and daughter, Hattie L., age 21.

Their children listed in Zephaniah Harrison's will were: Benjamin Harrison, Zephaniah Harrison, William H. Harrison, Jr. (note--Mr. Russell wrote that William Harrison, Jr. fathered a son George W. Harrison--this may be an error, George W., was their son, or their may have been two George W. Harrison's), Charles Harrison, Edward Harrison and Hattie Harrison.  From census data and the will of his father, Zephaniah Harrison, their children were:

4.1.1.1 George W. Harrison, was born in about 1848 in Ohio.

4.1.1.2 Benjamin Harrison, was born in about 1849 in Ohio.  There is one Benjamin Harrison in the 1880 Federal Census of Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio.  His birth year and birthplace match exactly.  The only discrepancy is the place of birth that he listed for his mother, he listed her place of birth as Maine, not Maryland.  His occupation also matches the 1870 census, in 1880 he listed his occupation as a civil engineer.  The census may have been enumerated by himself, it was recorded by B.W. Harrison, on page 245C:

Harrison, Benj. W. m  31        Civil Engineer Ohio Maryland  Maine
Emily J.  f  30  Wife Keeping House Ohio  Ohio Ohio
Herbert  m   5  Son                        Ohio  Ohio  Ohio
Ruth  f    2 1/2  Daughter            Ohio  Ohio   Ohio
Kate f    1       Daughter            Ohio  Ohio   Ohio

By 1900 Benjamin had forgotten that his parents started out in Maryland.  From the 1900 Federal Census of Millcreek Township, Bond Hill Precinct, Hamilton County, Ohio, ED# 301, sheet 5B, their household listed (Benjamin and Emily both stated that they had been married for 27 years; Emily stated that she had given birth to 3 living children; all birthplaces were recorded as Ohio):

#94  95 Harrison, Benjamin W. Head Mar 1850 50   Civil Engineer
                                 Emily J. Wife Sep 1849 50
                              Herbert T. Son  Dec 1874 25    Dr. [?]
                        Ruth [?]  Daughter  Sep  1877  22
                         Kate S.  Daughter   Feb  1879  21

It was the 1910 Federal Census that confirmed that Benjamin was indeed the Benjamin Harrison whose parents both were born in Maryland.  However, it was not without a twist.  Emily, was age 60 and was enumerated as the head of household in Cincinnati, 13th Ward, Hamilton County, Ohio, ED# 377, sheet 7B, with her 2 daughters, Ruth, single, age 28, occupation listed as a wholesale milliner and Catherine, age 26, single, working in a department store.  Emily listed her marital status as married, she stated that she had been so for 37 years and also stated that all three children were still living.  Somehow Benjamin was skipped--however, he did go to the census office and recorded the following information on a supplemental form (Cincinnati, 6th Ward, Hamilton County, Ohio, ED# 75, sheet 10A):

Harrison, Benj. W. Head 61 M137 Ohio Maryland Maryland Civil Engineer

Benjamin and Emily were both still living in 1920--in separate households, which may be why he wasn't included in the 1900 census information.  He was age 70 and listed his marital status as married, Emily was age 67 and also listed her marital status as married.  Both of their daughters, Ruth, now age 36, occupation stenographer, and Catherine, now age 34, occupation bookkeeper, were still single and living with their mother.

Ruth and Catherine were both still unmarried in 1930.  They were living together in Cincinnati, Ruth listed her age as 50 and Catherine stated that she was 48.

Benjamin W. Harrison's photograph and his name appears on the Hamilton County, Ohio website he is shown as the County Surveyor from 1893-1902.  Their three children were:

4.1.1.2.1 Herbert Harrison, was born in December 1874 in Maryland.

4.1.1.2.2 Ruth Harrison, was born in September 1877 in Ohio.

4.1.1.2.3 Catherine S. Harrison, was born in February 1879 in Ohio.

4.1.1.3 Zephaniah Harrison, was born in about 1851 in Ohio.  In the 1880 Federal Census, "Zeph Harrison" and his brother Edward P. Harrison, both railroad engineers, were living in Carbondale, Jackson County, Illinois (they were both single).  Zeph Harrison, must have become ill in what was described in the news article as the "scourge", from the Newark Daily Advocate, dated 15 October 1888:

"Disappearing.
The Southern Scourge Passing Away Gradually.

Yellow Jack's Vestiges at Various Points---Decreases in the Number of New Cases and Deaths---The Stricken People have a New Hope---And a Cold Snap Anxiously Awaited to Stamp Out the Terrible Plague.

JACKSONVILLE, FLA., October 15.--Quite a number of new cases yesterday and some of the sick faring rather badly; notably T. T. Stockton, Business Manager of The Times Union, and Undertaker Clarke, who are very low.  Zeph Harrison, Civil Engineer, has been compelled to surrender to the scourge.  He is at Sand Hills, where many patients go now from choice."

Zeph Harrison is listed in city directories for Jacksonville Florida 1888-1893 and in the 1900 Federal Census of Precinct 25, Gilmore, Duval County, Florida.  Zeph was single, age 49, birth in August 1850 in Maryland, father's place of birth listed as Maryland, mother's place of birth listed as Ohio.  He listed his occupation as a civil engineer.  I did not find him in 1910.

4.1.1.4 William H. Harrison, Jr., was born in about 1853 in Ohio.  William did marry and was enumerated in his father-in-law's household in the 1880 Federal Census of Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, District 130, page 69A:

#146  296 Constant, H.  m  52  retired liquor m. France France France

I did not locate them in the 1900 census.

4.1.1.5 Charles L. Harrison, was born in about 1857 in Ohio.

4.1.1.6 Hattie or Harriet Harrison, was born in about 1859 in Ohio.

4.1.1.7 Edward Harrison, was born in about 1861 in Ohio.  He was in Illinois with his brother "Zeph" Harrison in 1900 (see above) working for the railroad.

4.1.1.8 Sally Harrison, was born in about 1866 in Ohio.  She appeared in the 1870 census at age 4 years old, she was not listed in the 1880 household.

4.1.2 Josiah Harrison, born on 23 January 1821 in Maryland and died on 6 August 1874 (he was deceased prior to the of the settlement of his father's will in 1882).  His widow was listed as Rebecca Harrison (in the 1850 and 1870 censuses her name was recorded as Ann R.).  They are both buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, in Frederick, Maryland (his name is spelled "Joshue" on his marker, which may or may not be the original marker, his date of birth on his cemetery marker gives his date of birth as 1815--which doesn't match any of the census data).  Josiah died in 1880 and Ann Rebecca died in September 1891 (her date of burial is listed as 16 September 1891, the cemetery record listed her maiden name as "Ludwig").

There is a marriage listed in Frederick County which looks to be about right:

JOSIAH R. HARRISON
Spouse:    LUDWICK, ANN R.
Marriage Date:    8 May 1844
In the 1850 Federal Census of Frederick town, Frederick County, Maryland, his occupation was listed as a currier.  The children listed in the 1850 household were: Mary E., age 5; Georgette, age 4; and William H., age 1 year.
In the 1860 Federal Census of Frederick City, Frederick County, Maryland, he was living next door to his parents, Zephaniah and Mary Harrison, his household consisted of:

#608  598 Josiah Harrison  40  m  d. [teacher of ___ school]  1000  " [Maryland]

In 1870 he was enumerated in 3rd Ward Frederick City, Frederick County, Maryland recorded on the 12th of July (all birthplaces were listed as Maryland):

#121  126  Harrison, Josiah    49    m    Skin Dresser     1,500  200

In the 1880 Federal Census, Rebecca, age 54, was widowed and enumerated as the head of household in Frederick City, Frederick County, Maryland.  Her son, Luther F. Harrison, was age 22 and working as a postal clerk, her daughters Amelia, age 28 and Katie A., age 13, were both still living with their mother.

Their children were:

4.1.2.1 Mary Elizabeth Harrison, was born on 11 February 1845 in Maryland (the 1900 census shows her birth in 1846).  She married John Gomber on 6 February 1868 in Evangelical Lutheran or Lutheran Congregation of  Zion Church, Middletown, Frederick, Maryland (from church records).  John Gomber died in October 1916, Mary Elizabeth (Harrison) Gomber died in August 1906, they are both buried on the Gomber family plot in Mount Olivet Cemetery, In Frederick, Maryland.

In the 1900 Federal Census, John and Mary Gomber were enumerated at 44 South Market Street, Frederick City, Frederick County, Maryland, ED# 9, sheets 4B and 5A (John and Mary both stated that they had been married for 31 years; Mary stated that she had given birth to 2 living children; their daughter, May V., was widowed, she stated that she had given birth to 1 living child; all birthplaces were recorded as Maryland):

#81 86 Gomber, John Head Jan 1841  58 Machinist

 Nusz, Mary V.     daughter June  1870 29
Nusz, Emery G. Gr. Son     Apr    1896  6
 Gomber, Margaret M. daughter June 1873 26

In the 1910 Federal Census of Frederick City, Frederick County, Maryland, ED# 51, sheet 2A, John Gomber, age 69, was widowed (however--he did state that he had been married for 39 years).  Also listed in the 1910 household were his daughter "Margarett', age 35, single; daughter, Mary V. Nusz, age 37 (she stated that she had been married once--16 years ago, which would be in about 1894) and her son, Emory G. Nusz, age 15.  The street address was recorded as 36 South Market Street.  Their two known daughters were:

4.1.2.1.1 Mary Virginia Gomber, was born in June 1870 in Maryland.  She married Emory M. Nusz in about 1893, he died shortly thereafter (probably before the birth of his son) and is buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery.  She apparently never remarried (I have not yet located her in 1920) and was enumerated in the 1930 Federal Census in the household of her son, Emory (see below).  She is also buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery.  Her son was:
4.1.2.1.1.1 Emory Gomber Nusz, was born in April 1896 (1900 census) in Maryland and died on 27 January 1960 (his cemetery marker reads birth on 19 April 1894.  He is buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, next to his wife, Margaret Y. Nusz, she was born on 16 September 1895 and died on 18 August 1991.

They were married by 1920 and recorded in Frederick City, Frederick County, Maryland, ED# 60, sheet 2A (street address listed as 34 South Market Street; an additional note--his cousin, Robert Harrison, son of Luther Harrison was living next door):

#29  35  Muse, Emory  Head  25  Maryland  proprietor store
                  Margaret  Wife   24  Virginia
                  Margaret  Aunt   48  Maryland
                Virginia  Daughter  4  Virginia

In 1930 they were all living together in Frederick, Frederick County, Maryland, ED# 7, sheet 6A, on the 7th of April (the street address was again listed as South Market Street):

#106 125 Nusz, Emory A. Head 35 Maryland Machinist General

                Margaret  Daughter  14  Virginia    None
                Mary         Mother    60  Maryland  None

Emory and Margaret had at least one daughter:

4.1.2.1.1.1.1 Margaret Virginia Nusz, was born in about 1916 in Virginia.

4.1.2.1.1.2 Margaret F. Gomber, was born in June 1873 in Maryland (she never married) and is also buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

4.1.2.2 Georgette Harrison, was born in November 1846 in Maryland.  She was listed as Georgette Carson in the probate of her grandfather's will.  She is buried just behind her grandparents Zephaniah and Mary Harrison in Mount Olivet Cemetery.  She married Alonzo Carson, his obituary and funeral notice dated 15 July 1890:

Georgette's obituary dated 9 March 1922:

Georgette and Alonzo had 1 daughter:
4.1.2.2.1 Mora Carson, was born in May 1871 in Maryland.  She married August Frerie in about 1896, he was born in March 1867 in Maryland (1900 Federal Census of Baltimore City, 9th Ward, ED# 111).  They had one son:
4.1.2.2.1.1 Charles William Franklin Frerie, was born in about March 1898 in Maryland.

4.1.2.3 William Henry Harrison, was born in November 1848 in Maryland and died in 1924.  He and his wife, Caroline are both buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery next to his parents.

He was married and enumerated in Frederick, Frederick County, Maryland in the 1880 Federal Census.  His occupation was listed as a "tanner currier", which matches his occupation from the 1870 census (see above).  His 1880 household consisted of his wife, Caroline M., age 21 born in Maryland; and two daughters: Florence age 3 and Lulie May age 2 years, both born in Maryland.

He was a widower by 1900 (however he did list his marital status as married in the 1900 census, but did not state for how many years he had been married, his wife Caroline died in 1896).  From the 1900 Federal Census of Frederick, Frederick County, Maryland, ED# 6, sheet 14B, address listed as 90 East Third Street (all birthplaces were listed as Maryland):

William was living with his son, William, Jr. in the 1910 census, I did also find several of his children (see below).  His known children were:

4.1.2.3.1 Lula May Harrison, was born in January 1876 in Maryland (Lula and Florence's ages may have been reversed/transposed by the enumerator in the 1880 census).

4.1.2.3.2 Florence Gertrude Harrison, was born in January 1877 in Maryland and died in 1947 (burial on 8 October).  Florence married Frank S. Ridgely, he was born in December 1875 and died in 1945.  They are both buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Florence and Frank were living in Frederick City, Frederick County, Maryland in the 1900 and 1910 censuses.  Their 1900 household in ED# 5, sheet 11B, listed (they both stated that they had been married for 4 years; Florence also stated that she had given birth to 3 children, 2 of whom were still living--an additional note, Charles and Ellen Ridgely were living next door, ages 55 and 45 respectively; all birthplaces were listed as Maryland):

                     Franklin H.     Son   Nov  1899 6/12
       Kimmel, Lottie A.   Servant  Apr  1882   18

From the 1910 Federal Census, ED# 54, sheet 6B (Frank and Florence both stated that they had been married for 14 years; nothing was recorded in the column for number of children she had given birth to; all birthplaces were recorded as Maryland):

#142  145  Ridgely, Frank S.      Head         33    City linesman  Electric Light Co.
                        Florence G.      Wife          32

                         Charles H.       Son            1 6/12
            Harrison, Alice V.      Sister-in-law   20

By 1920 they were living in Washington, D.C (ED# 243, sheets 16A and 16B), where Frank was employed as an electrician in a Navy Yard.  The children still listed in the 1920 household were: Howard F., age 19; Marguerite, age 18; Mildred, age 16 (whose birthplace was now listed as Pennsylvania); Charles H., age 11; and Mary E., age 8.  They stayed in Washington, D.C. at least through the 1930 census.  Their children were:

4.1.2.3.2.1 Eleanor Ridgely, was born in December 1897 in Maryland.

4.1.2.3.2.2 Howard Franklin Ridgely, was born in November 1899 in Maryland.

4.1.2.3.2.3 Margaret or Marguerite Ridgely, was born in about 1902 in Maryland.

4.1.2.3.2.4 Mildred Ridgely, was born in about 1904 in Maryland or Pennsylvania.

4.1.2.3.2.5 Charles H. Ridgely, was born in about 1919 in Maryland.

4.1.2.3.2.6 Mary Ridgely, was born in about 1922 in Maryland.

4.1.2.3.3 William Henry Harrison, was born in March 1878 according to the 1900 census, however, he was not listed in the 1880 household and may have embellished his birthdate by a couple of years.  In the 1910 Federal Census of Frederick City, Frederick County, Maryland, ED# 51, sheet 9A, his household listed (William and Elsie both stated that they had been married for 4 years; Elsie stated that she had given birth to 1 living child; William, Sr. stated that he wa a widower; all birthplaces were recorded as Maryland):

#175 182 Harrison, William Head 30   Cooper
                               Elsie  Wife 23   Housekeeper
                              Ralph  Son    2
William Sr.  Father  62   Tanner Retired

By 1920 (ED# 60, sheet 8A of Frederick County, Maryland), William and Elsie had added several children to their rapidly growing family.  William now stated that he was 36, was employed as a tanner in a tannery and headed a household consisting of Elsie, age 33 and children: Ralph, age 11; Elvin, age 9; Virginia, age 6; Douglas G. age 2 and "Cleverland", age 1 year.

In 1930 William listed his age as 48 in 1930 and had changed his occupation--he now stated that he owned/operated a shoe repair business.  Elsie was now 42 and working as a "washerwoman", their children in 1930 were: Irvin, age 19; Virginia, age 17; Garwood, age 13; Leroy, age 11, and Adelene, age 5.  Their children through the 1930 census were:

4.1.2.3.3.1 Ralph Harrison, was born in about 1908 in Maryland.  Ralph was married by 1930, he and his wife Catherine, had 1 son, Ralph W. Harrison, Jr., born in about 1929 in Maryland.  Catherine's sister, Pauline Foland, was also listed in the 1930 household.

4.1.2.3.3.2 Irving Harrison, was born in about 1911 in Maryland.
