Descendants of Henry Seybert
Our earliest known ancestor is Henry Seybert, who came to the new world at age 15, with German mercenaries employed by King George III of England to fight against the American Colonists in the Revolutionary War.  At the end of the war, Henry refused to be "redeemed" by the British government, and decided to stay in America.  He was jailed at Lancaster, Pennsylvania and later freed when a man by the name of Schaffner who paid 100 dollars for Henry to work as a tailor's apprentice.  After three years he earned his freedom and attained citizenship.  He was married to Susan Kruetzer on 5 July 1790, the ceremony was performed by the Reverend Muehlenburg, a minister of the Lutheran Church.  Henry Seybert died young in 1806, he and his wife had by that time purchased and owned a farm.  Susan Seybert abandoned her two young sons and joined the Harmonists, led by George Rapp.

Henry and Susan had four sons: John Seybert, born on 7 July 1791, who would later become the first Bishop of the Evangelical Church, he died at age 68 on 4 January 1860 and is buried at Flat Rock Cemetery in Seneca County, Ohio; Christian Seybert who died in infancy; Henry Seybert, who also died in infancy; and our ancestor David Seybert, who was born on the 29th of April 1799 and died on the 29th of December 1882.  David Seybert is buried in Sidener Cemetery in Van Buren Township, Lagrange County, Indiana.

Taken from the first chapter of the Life and Labors of John Seybert, the First Bishop of the Evangelical Association, by Rev. S.P. Spreng, dated 1888.

John Seybert, and his father, David Seybert, were both living in Erie County in 1850.  David was enumerated in Mill Creek Township and his son John was living in McKean Township (see below).  David Seybert's 1850 household consisted of himself, age 41, he listed his occupation as a cooper, his birthplace was listed as Pennsylvania; also listed was Elizabeth, age 56, born in Pennsylvania and Aaron Seybert, age 14, also born in Pennsylvania.

In 1860, at age 61, David "Sibert", a cooper by occupation, was living with his daughter Maria and her husband, Noah Hershey in Summit Township, Post Office Erie, Erie County, Pennsylvania (see below).

In 1870 David Seybert was living in the household of what is presumably his daughter, Magdelena and his son-in-law, Nathaniel Davidson, in Van Buren Township, Post Office Scott, Lagrange County, Indiana (see below).

David Seybert was recorded for the last time in the household of his son, Aaron David Seybert in 1880, in Van Buren Township, Lagrange County, Indiana (see below).  He died on 2 December 1882

The biography of his son-in-law Noah Hershey gives David's wife's name as Elizabeth Hesler and also stated that David and Elizabeth had 8 children, 4 of whom were still living in 1884 at the time of publication.

David Seybert's son-in-law, Noah Hershey, gave David's wife's name as Elizabeth Hesler and also stated that David and Elizabeth had 8 children, 4 of whom were still living in his 1884 biography.  I have listed only the names of those four children named in the 1884 biography.
The known children of David Seybert were:

John and Christianna Seybert, Riverside Cemetery in Howe, Indiana.

1.1 John Seybert, was born on 18 August 1818 in Pennsylvania and died on 8 January 1894 in Lagrange County, Indiana.  John and his wife, Christianna, who was born on 28 January 1819 and died on 8 July 1890 are both buried in Riverside Cemetery, just outside of Howe, in Lagrange County, Indiana.

There is a marriage record for John Seybert and Christiana Merrils in Cuyahoga County, Ohio dated 22 June 1843 (actual image).  I can't imagine how/why they were married there and then were recorded living in Erie County in 1850.

They were first recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of McKean Township, Erie County, Pennsylvania, enumerated on the 19th of November:

Ten years later, in 1860, the John and Christianna Seybert family was enumerated in Lima Village, Post Office Lima, Lagrange County, Indiana, recorded on the 23rd of June:

#518  529    John         Seybert    42    m    Blacksmith        Pennsylvania

In the 1880 Federal Census of Lima Township, Lagrange County, Indiana, ED# 14, page 316C, on the 14th of June, John and his wife "Christian" Seybert both listed their ages as 61 years.  John listed his occupation as a farmer.  Still living in the 1880 household were Amelia, single at age 26, Chas., single and age 24, and an adopted daughter, Henrietta Haus, age 12.

John Seybert's death record listed his date of death as 8 January 1894, place of death Lima, age 76 years, parents names not recorded (Lagrange County Indiana Deaths, Book A, page 137, #16).

1.2 Maria S. Seybert, was born in about 1825 in Pennsylvania.  Maria married Noah Hershey, his biography appeared in the History of Erie County, Pennsylvania, Part VI, Township Biographies, Mill Creek Township, page 124 (Warner, Beers & Company, Chicago, 1884, by Samuel P. Bates):

1.2.2 Charles N. Hershey, was born in 1856 in Pennsylvania and died in 1924.  I have not yet located him in the 1900 Federal Census.  In the 1910 Federal Census of 5th Ward, Erie City, Erie County, Pennsylvania, ED# 97, sheet 2A, his household listed (both Charles and Josephine stated that they had been married for 14 years and that this was their first marriage; Josephine stated that she had given birth to 3 living children; address 2217 Peach St.):

In the 1920 Federal Census Charles listed his occupation as retired at age 63.  Josephine listed her age as 52, she also stated that she immigrated to the US in 1883 (or 1893, difficult to make out) and was naturalized as a citizen in 1897.  Sons, Charles H., age 19 and George C., age 17 were still living at 2217 peach St. with their parents (5th Ward, Erie City, Erie County, Pennsylvania, ED# 100, sheet 10B).

In 1930 Josephine stated that she was married, however, she was widowed and was recorded living in the household adjacent to her son Charles (see below, she stated in 1930 that she immigrated in 1884).  Josephine died in 1935 and is buried on the Hershey family plot in Erie Cemetery.

Charles and Josephine had three sons:
1.2.2.1 Edward Hershey, was born in about 1898 in Pennsylvania.

1.3 Magdelena or Martha Seybert, according to her husband's biography was born on the 24th of April 1832 in Erie County, Pennsylvania.  I believe that her marriage to Nathaniel Davidson was her second, her name is listed as "Gerst" in his biography, which appeared in the "History LaGrange County, Indiana" 1882, by F.A. Battey & Co (Van Buren Township--there is a Emma Gerst, age 17, birthplace Pennsylvania, listed in their 1870 household that may have been her daughter by her first husband):
"NATHANIEL DAVIDSON is a native of Lancaster County, Penn., where he was born June 17, 1831. His parents were natives of the same county; his father, Michael Davidson, was born March 1, 1794, and his mother, Rebecca Davidson, May 12, 1794. In 1840, they removed to Erie County, Penn., where Michael Davidson died in February, 1869, and she is yet living. Their family was composed of four children - Sarah, Catharine, Nathaniel and Michael. The subject went to Erie County, Penn., with his parents, and remained nine years; he then went to Erie City to learn the shoemaker's trade. After serving an apprenticeship of three years he returned home, then again resumed his trade in Erie City, and was employed by various parties. In 1854, he came to Goshen, Ind., made a limited sojourn, and went back to Pennsylvania. In 1855, he went to Iowa, and after spending two years there returned again to his native State, and was married, October 8, 1857, to Mrs. Martha Gerst, who was born in Erie County, Penn., April 24, 1832. In 1861, they came to La Grange County, and located in this township. They lived four years with his parents, then Mr. Davidson went to the village of Van Buren, where he was engaged in working at this trade about three years. The following nine years he was employed in working on the home farm, removing then to his present farm, of 198 acres, in Section 27. Mr. and Mrs. Davidson belong to the Methodist Church, and have had five children - Charlotte V., David P., William E., Sarah C., and Earl, deceased."
Nathaniel and Magdelena first appeared in the 1860 Federal Census of McKean Township, Erie County, Pennsylvania enumerated on the 2nd of July their household listed (Emma and Sarah had attended school that year):
