ALLTON

Miles Allton was born in New York on August 26, 1824.  Biographical references to his parents, David Allton and Lucy Farwell, report that the family "drove their own teams" from New York to Hancock County, Illinois, in 1836 and settled in the area that would later be named Fountain Green Township.

Miles married Elizabeth Jane Parker on May 7, 1850, in Hancock County.  She was born December 16, 1828, in Ohio, the daughter of Abel Parker and Margaret Gragg.
Marriage License  (66k)

There are a couple of anomolies in census records for Miles and Elizabeth.  In 1850, shortly after their marriage, Miles was enumerated in the home of his sister and brother-in-law, Celona and Conrad Cratsenberg; Elizabeth apparently was missed.  But the 1860 Federal Census made up for that omission when Elizabeth was enumerated twice: once as "Parker" in her own home, and again as "Elizabeth Alton" in her father's home.

Elizabeth died May 10, 1889, probably in or near Fountain Green Township.  She was buried at Fountain Green Cemetery.  Miles followed her in death on August 20, 1901.  As of 1900 he was apparently living with his daughter, Eva, and her husband in Carthage, also in Hancock County.  He, too, was buried at Fountain Green Cemetery.

The children of Miles Allton and Elizabeth Parker were:

i. Eva Allton, born June 12, 1854, probably in Fountain Green Township.  She died October 22, 1927, at her home in Carthage.

ii. Mancel D. Alton, born December 10, 1855, probably in Fountain Green Township.  Like many of the later Allton descendants, Mancel adopted the spelling "Alton" for his surname.  He died November 27, 1927, in Keokuk, Iowa, less than a month after his sister, Eva.  Interment at Fountain Green Cemetery.

iii. Jennie Allton, born about December 1860, probably in Fountain Green Township.  She died in February of 1935 in New York, the last surviving Allton sibling.  Burial location undetermined.
