In 1850 William and Mary Ann Riley were living in Washington County, Maryland, with two young children.  William was born in Pennsylvania about 1825.  Living in proximity were John and Mary Riley, natives of Pennsylvania, whom we believe were William's parents.  The obituary of Louisa Riley Long Curry (John's and Mary's daughter), stated that John and Mary came to Hancock County in 1855.  We suspect that William and Mary Ann accompanied them, but regardless, the younger couple had arrived by the summer of 1860.  At that time John was farming in Fountain Green Township; William and Mary Ann were in adjacent Hancock Township.

Mary Ann Riley was born in Maryland on October 23, 1825; her maiden name was Myres, according to the 1878 marriage documents of a son.  She and William became parents of at least four children before William's early death in 1866.

i. John H. Riley, born about 1849 in Maryland.

ii. Sarah C. Riley, born about 1850 in Maryland.  She died September 14, 1877, probably in Hancock County.  Burial location undetermined.

iii. William Luther Riley, born about 1851 in Maryland.

iv. Mary E. Riley, born about 1854 in Maryland.

On September 6, 1868, Mary Ann married Richard W. Dale, son of James B. and Polly Dale.  A biography of Richard's brother, Andrew Jackson Dale, has been quoted as reporting Polly's maiden name was Dawson; other researchers show her name as Damson.

Mary and Richard would not have many years together.  She died August 13, 1877, and was buried at Fountain Green Cemetery.  The above mentioned biography of Andrew, published in 1894, stated that of eight Dale siblings, only Andrew and brother George were still living.
