Chambers returned home.  On February 20, 1867, he married Sarah C. Riley, daughter of William Riley, then deceased, and Mary Ann Myres, from Pennsylvania and Maryland, respectively.  Sarah was born in Maryland about 1850.

Chambers and Sarah became the parents of two daughters in quick succession and soon thereafter relocated to Canville Township, Neosho County, Kansas.  A third daughter was born in Kansas. Like his elder brother, Chambers was a teacher.

After fortunately surviving over three years service during the bitter war, Chambers was not to enjoy a long life of health and happiness.

Sarah died on September 14, 1877; we have not determined where she died.  Not quite two years later Chambers was gone, a victim of consumption.  He died in his father's home in January of 1879 according to the Mortality Schedule prepared in conjunction with the 1880 Federal Census.  We do not know where Sarah and Chambers were buried.
