James Oscar Ebert was born March 24, 1875 in Illinois, probably in Hancock Township, Hancock County. He was the son of Abraham Ebert and Margaret E. Callihan.

Oscar married Nellie May Cochran on May 17, 1905.  She was the daughter of James G. Cochran and Lucinda Ames.

Oscar and Nellie had one son:

i. Melvin M. Ebert, born about 1911 in Illinois, probably Hancock County.
 

In 1918 Oscar signed up for the draft.  The following details are excerpted from his registration form.

Nellie May died December 9, 1927, in Hamilton, Montebello Township, Hancock County.  Burial location undetermined.

Before April 1, 1930, Oscar married Minnie Cowdry, daughter of Spencer Cowdry and Jane King.

Oscar died September 8, 1941, at his home in Prairie Township, Hancock County, Illinois.  Burial location undetermined.  Minnie survived him.  She may have died May 15, 1944, in Sonora Township, Hancock County, but this is unconfirmed.

James Oscar Ebert, formerly a resident of Hamilton and for several years Superintendent of the City Waterworks here, passed away at his home northwest of Carthage on September 8th.  The son of Abraham and Margaret Callihan Ebert, he was born 24 March 1875.  On 17 May 1905 he was united in marriage with Miss Nellie Cochran.  One son, Melvin was born to this union.  His wife passed away 09 December 1927.  Later he married Minnie Cowdry, who with the son survives.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Hanerhoff funeral home in Hamilton where a large concourse of relatives and friends were in attendance.  He was a member of Bethel Presbyterian church in Hamilton and attended the Methodist church in Ferris after moving near there and the Pastor, Rev. Oliver Hood officated at the service.
