MARIA RINEHART (nee SHORE) ca. 1847 - ca. 1910

THE LAST DEFENDER
_____________

John Rinehart Last G.A.R. of Hancock Township
Dies on September 24th.

John Rinehart laid down his arms in the battle of life Sept. 24th, 1924, having lived in Hancock township for fifty-two years on or near the farm where he died.  He was born Sept. 13th, 1841, in York county, Pennsylvania and was 83 years and 11 days of age.

He was of a family of eight children who came into the home of Charles and Barbara (Grisinger) Rinehart and there is but one left, Daniel, who lives near their boyhood home.  There were also one half-brother and two half-sisters, of whom only David is living.

He grew to manhood in his native state and on June 18th, 1863, enlisted in Company G, 143rd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, giving 10 months of service to his country and was honorably discharged because of physical disability.

On Feb. 19th, 1871, he was married to Maria Shore, who for more than fourteen years has been waiting for him on the other side of the river.  There were born to them five children: Scott, who died when but one year old; Lyman H., of Colchester; Bruce B.; Mrs. Olive B. Siepel, and Ella M., who reside in the vicinity of Hills Grove.  There are also two grandchildren, Lucy Rinehart and John Siepel and two nephews, Clayton L. Short [Shore], of the same neighborhood and Dr. H. M. Rinehart, of Knoxville, besides other relatives who live in the east.

He gave his heart into his Master's keeping when a boy and has never wearied of following in God's pathway; he talked of the last journey with pleasure and of the tender mercies which he had always enjoyed.  He and his wife joined the M. E. Church of Hills Grove by letter fifty-one years ago.  He kept abreast with the progress of the world, enjoyed reading and was congenial company to the young as well as to those of his own age.

The funeral services were held on Friday afternoon in the Hills Grove Church, conducted by his paster, Rev. John R. Hubbs.  The pall bearers were J. T. Goodridge, Wesley Wilson, W. E. Yetter, Logan Booz, Chas. McDonough and C. E. Wallace.  Appropriate music was rendered by a quartette, Mark Walker, Mrs. Agnes Cuba, Mrs. Mabel Webb and George W. Foley, with Mrs. Ida J. Waddill as organist.  The honorary pall bearers were his comrades, A. D. Williams, J. D. Tabler, J. R. McCullough, Marion Hocker and Nelson Johnson, and the service at the grave was in part military.  The interment was in the Hills Grove cemetery.

The Rinehart children were probably all born in Hancock Township:

i. Andrew Scott Rinehart, born April 10, 1873, died August 21, 1874, burial at Willis Cemetery in Hancock Township.

ii. Brincely Bruce Rinehart, born April 12, 1875, died January 4, 1943 in Hancock Township, burial at Hills Grove Cemetery.  His given and middle names are often found in reverse order.

iii. Lyman Hayes Rinehart, born May 14, 1876.  He died September 23, 1941, at Colchester, McDonough County, Illinois.

iv. Olive Blanche Rinehart, born February 10, 1879, died April 16, 1928, burial at Hills Grove Cemetery.

v. Ellen M. Rinehart, born about 1881, died February 23, 1943, in Hancock Township, burial at Hills Grove.  Family records indicate her given name was Ellen.  Her death certificate was issued in the name of Ella M.  She did not marry until after both of her parents were deceased. Between 1924 and 1928 she married James D. Badger, the son of David Badger and Sarah Ann Gregory.  James was born about 1867, probably in Tennessee Township, McDonough County.

Judging by their near neighbors in the 1930 Census, Ella and James continued to operate the original Rinehart farm in Hancock Township.
