MARY JANE KELLY
 JOHN CHARLES WELLS

Mary Jane Kelly, daughter of John Kelly and Margaret Boyd, was born about 1845 in Hancock County, Illinois, probably on the Kelly home farm in a township then known only by it's coordinates: Five North of the Beardstown Baseline, Five West of the 4th Principal Meridian.  Five years hence it would be named Hancock Township.

An image of John Wells' pension application card.John Charles Wells was born in Pennsylvania about 1848.  During the Civil War he served in Company K of the 17th Pennsylvania Infantry.

In 1870 John was in Fountain Green Township, Hancock County; his occupation was miller.  He applied for a Hancock County marriage license for himself and Mary J. Kelly on April 8, 1872.  They were married on April 9th by Thomas F. Mangan, a Roman Catholic priest.  Marriage Documents  (63k, 94k)

They lost their first two children, little boys who were buried at St. Simon Cemetery.  It appears they soon thereafter moved to Appanoose County, Iowa, where John continued to work in his chosen trade.

In 1891 John filed for and was granted a pension based on his military service.

Census records suggest that Mary Jane and Mary Etta, if not John, moved to Florida between 1910 and 1914.  In 1917 Mary applied for a widow's pension.  In 1920 she was living with her younger brother, Patrick, in San Antonio, Pasco County, Florida.

It appears Mary passed away between 1920 and 1930.  In 1930 Patrick was living with John's and Mary Jane's daughter and son-in-law, Mary Etta and Peter Cour, in St. Leo, Pasco County.

The children of Mary Jane Kelly and John Charles Wells were:

i. John W. Wells, born February 23, 1873*, probably in Hancock County, Illinois.  He died on May 2, 1873, and was buried in St. Simon Cemetery, Hancock County, Illinois. Tombstone

ii. Charles S. Wells, born about June 1874, probably in Hancock County, Illinois.  He died June 29, 1875; burial at St. Simon Cemetery, Hancock County, Illinois. Tombstone

iii. Mary Etta Wells, born about December 1875 in Iowa.  About 1914 Mary Etta married Peter Cour, son of Alexander and Melanie Cour, natives of France and Switzerland, respectively. Peter was born in Indiana about 1870.  The Cours were living in Allen County, Indiana, in 1880, and had relocated to San Antonio, Florida, by 1900.

Both Mary Etta and Peter died after April 1, 1930.
