Kate L. Bear was born about September 1874, perhaps in St. Mary's Township, Hancock County, Illinois.
Jennie R. Bear was born in Ohio about August 1880, probably in German Township, Montgomery County.
They were the daughters of
 Albert S. and Lydia Rees Bear.
Albert and Lydia came to Illinois from Ohio soon after they were married in 1866, began their family, went back to Ohio, then returned to Illinois in the early 1880's. According to documentation on Lawrence Bear, their son, Albert and Lydia and family located in Hancock Township, Hancock County, about 1882. They remained in Hancock Township, near Joetta, for a number of years.

Both Kate and Jennie began careers as teachers early in life, and followed that work in several states.
