JOETTA

Malinda Harding was born near Adair, McDonough county, Illinois, Jan. 9, 1869, and died at St. Francis hospital at Macomb, Oct. 20, 1908, aged 39 years, 9 months and 11 days.  Deceased came with her parents from White Flock to this vicinity in the year 1887, where she resided with her parents until her marriage.  She was united in marriage to W. E. Callihan November 6, 1890, who survives her.  Besides her husband, her father, George Harding, of Ft. Green and one brother, W. C. Harding [sic], of Burlington, Ia., survive her, and a host of friends in this vicinity who sympathize with these sorrowing relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Callihan lived in this vicinity a short time after their marriage and then moved to Tennessee where they lived in a nice home of their own until a year ago last January when they went to Galesburg where they were proprietors of a lunch room at the switch yards in the new yards there. Deceased was taken to the hospital some time ago where she was operated on for tumor. The shock resulting from the operation was too great for her to withstand and death came as a result. She was taken to her home in Tennessee on Tuesday evening.  Funeral was held at the M. E. Church at that place on Wednesday morning at 10 o’clock, conducted by Rev. Payne, pastor at that place, after which the body was brought to the Majorville cemetery for interment.  The floral offerings were very beautiful.  An especially lovely piece was sent from the switchmen where she had served such excellent meals to them during her short stay there.  She died assuring her friends that all was well with her.  May He who heals every sorrow be a comfort to the sorrowing relatives.

This obituary probably came from the Carthage Republican.  It was published in the Joetta column written by Hetty.  This transcription is from a copy, hand-dated 1908, in the files of the Hancock County Historical Society, Book N.

Malinda Harding married William E. Callihan on November 6, 1889 (not 1890 as reported in her obituary).  On that day they were joined by James H. Yetter and Clara E. White.  Perhaps the foursome traveled together to Colchester in McDonough County, where the James and Clara were married with William and Malinda as their witnesses.  Then William and Malinda were married by the same minister, with James and Clara as witnesses.  Marriage Documents (68k, 55k)

On the Board of Health form accompanying the license, Malinda reported that her parents were George W. Harding and Eliza E. Ellis, and that she had been born in Fulton County, Illinois.

Eliza and George were parted, by death or other circumstance, prior to January 10, 1878, when George married Sarah Hickson in Fulton County.  As we've seen so many times, Malinda and her younger brother, William, apparently were sent to live elsewhere, because they were not counted in their father's home in 1880.  We believe Malinda was living with her paternal grandparents in Lamoine Township, McDonough County.

William E. Callihan, also known as Ed, was born July 24, 1870, probably in Hancock Township, Hancock County.  He died February 8, 1929, at Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois, burial at Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Colchester, McDonough County.
