ANNIE E. CHATTERTON
Dau. of
C.W. & R. PARKER
BORN
June 6, 1855
DIED
Feb. 22, 1879

Dearest Annie, thou hast left us
Here thy loss we deeply feel
But 'tis God that hath bereft us
He can all our sorrows heal.

Perhaps time had dimmed memory, perhaps it was nothing more than human error in a news item, or perhaps an incorrect date of death was inscribed on Annie's tombstone.  Let us presume the inscription is accurate.

Ann E. Parker, daughter of Charles Washington Parker and Rebecca Oakes Trowell, was born in Hancock Township, Hancock County, Illinois.  She was married at Carthage on January 30, 1879, to Charles W. Chatterton, son of Henry D. and Mary Ann Easson Chatterton.
Marriage Documents  (83k, 82k)

Three weeks later Annie died from measles and was buried at Majorville Cemetery, less than a mile from where she was born.

When Rebecca Parker died in 1907, there were at least two obituaries published for her.  The Republican reported that Annie had died in April of 1879.  About a week later, The LaHarper reported that Annie had died six weeks after her marriage.  That misstatement was repeated in the obituaries of Annie's sister, Ada, and brother, Lemuel.
