| George W. Ellis was born February 22, 1847, in Illinois, probably Schuyler County, to William B. and Elizabeth Ellis, both natives of Virginia. The Ellises had established themselves in Schuyler County by 1840 and remained there through the time of the 1850 Federal Census. In 1860 they were living in St. Marys Township, Hancock County.
In 1865 George was one of the many local young men who joined the Union Army and served in the 118th Illinois Infantry. The following details are from the Muster and Descriptive Rolls compiled by the Illinois Adjutant General's Office:

He returned home and resumed farming with his father. Nine years later he married Nancy Ann Mosley. Nancy Ann was born in Hancock Township, Hancock County, in 1855. She was the daughter of early Hancock County settlers Armstead Mosley and the former Nancy Ryan Driskell.
On December 24, 1874, the Hancock County Clerk issued marriage license #4916 to George Ellis, 26, and Miss Anna Mosley, 19, both of Hancock Township. They were married on the 30th by William Booz, Minister of the Gospel, at the Booz residence (also located in Hancock Township).
The marriage produced four children, all of whom were probably born in Hancock Township:
George and Nancy divorced. She married Moses Printy about 1891 and they subsequently had two children together. The Printys lived in Carthage Township, Hancock County, and later in the village of Hamilton, Montebello Township, Hancock County. Nancy died prior to August of 1926 (perhaps prior to September 1918). In the meantime, George remained in Hancock Township. He and the three younger children were there in 1900. Myrtle died in 1903. By 1910 George had moved in with his sister and brother-in-law, |
