Mary Jane Sammons, daughter of James Sammons and Sarah Ellen Way, was born April 15, 1858, near Joetta, Hancock County, Illinois.  She died March 17, 1923, and was buried at Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Colchester, McDonough County, Illinois. Tombstone  (106k)

Mary Jane married, first, John Edwin Shields on December 19, 1876, at Carthage, Hancock County.  Marriage License  (63k)

John Edwin Shields, son of James Madison Shields and Electa Brown, was born December 9, 1854, in Henry County, Iowa. He died December 7 or 8, 1919, Colchester, McDonough County, and was buried at Mt. Auburn Cemetery. Tombstone  (106k)

The children of Mary Jane Sammons and John Edwin Shields were:

i. Florence Ellen Shields, born March 15, 1878 in or near Joetta, Hancock Township.  She died October 17, 1948, in Redondo Beach, California.  Burial at Mt. Auburn Cemetery.
 
ii. Lizzie Lea Shields, born April 18, 1881.  She died in January of 1971, in or near Strandquist, Marshall County, Minnesota.
 
iii. Iona May Shields, born January 13, 1885.  She died February 13, 1886, and was buried at the Willis Cemetery in Hancock Township.  Her tombstone was not located during a visit to the cemetery in 2000.
 
iv. James Clifton Shields, born in 1890, died in 1943.  Burial at Mt. Auburn Cemetery. Tombstone  (106k)
 
v. Abner Wilson Shields, born April 8, 1893, in Colchester, McDonough County.  He died August 14, 1973, in Roseburg, Oregon.  Interment at Mt. Auburn Cemetery.

vi. Unknown child, born and died before June 1, 1900.
 
vii. Unknown child, born and died between June 1, 1900, and April 15, 1910.

Mary Jane married, second, John Sticklen on September 27, 1922.  He survived her.
