Very quietly and unexpectedly, the death angel entered the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Callihan during the early morning hours of Friday, April 10, 1959, summoning Mrs. Callihan to her Heavenly home, as she slept. Although in frail health for more than year, due to heart disease, she had been reasonably well during the past few weeks, and able to be up and about her home, attending to her household tasks to the very last. As a matter of fact, just the night before her passing, she and Mr. Callihan had enjoyed a pleasant visit with friends who came in to spend the evening. Ethel Cecelia Conn, daughter of Lorenzo and Margaret (Dye) Conn, was born November 2, 1887, at the family home a few miles southeast of Fountain Green, her entire life having been spent in the Fountain Green and Webster communities. Seh [sic] received her education in the rural schools of the neighborhood, and was married on May 5, 1907 to Chester R. Callihan, the wedding taking place in the home of the officiating clergyman, Rev. W. H. Love, at Fountain Green. The newlyweds established their home in Webster, where they have resided continuously throughout the fifty-two years of their marriage. Just two years ago they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with open house at their home, at which time more than 150 guests called to offer felicitations. This was a very happy ocasion for Mrs. Callihan, and one which she has since re-lived many times in memory. For many years they made their home with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Callihan, both Chester and Ethel giving them thoughtful and devoted care during their declining years. A member of the Fountain Green Presbyterian church for many years, Mrs. Callihan was currently serving on the Board of Deacons. She was also a member of the Sunshine Sunday School and the Royal Neighbor lodge. Being gifted musically, both vocally and as a pianist, she gave generously of this talent through the years, helping out at many church and community gatherings as well as lending her assistance along this line at many funerals. For quite a number of years Ethel ably assisted her husband in the operation of a thriving produce business, making daily trip with him on his truck routes which covered a wide territory. Being quite skillful as a seamstress, she also followed the dressmaking business to some extent for may years. In addition to the faithful and devoted husband, her passing is mourned by one daughter, Mrs. Laverne Parsons, her husband, Ross, two grandchildren, Ross Byron and Sandra Parsons, all of Webster, two brothers, George Conn of Blandinsville, Perry Conn of Springfield, one sister, Mrs. Rubie Johnson, of Cairo, Missouri, her husbands sister, Mrs. Harry E. Spangler, of Carthage, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Her parents, five brothers and one sister preceded her in death. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, a kind and helpful neighbor and friend who was always willing to lend a helping hand whenever she could be of assistance, Mrs. Callihan will be missed in her home, the church and the community where she had lived so long. Relatives and friends filled the Fountain Green Presbyterian church to overflowing on Sunday to pay final respects at funeral services. Rev. William Tammen officiated, and the interment, in charge of the Banks funeral home, was in the McConnell cemetery.
