JACOB CALLIHAN Sept. 25, 1820 Jan. 26, 1906 MARY
|
| The dates shown above for Jacob are from the 1965 Van Dine reading of Webster Cemetery, and also appear in Jacob Callihan's obituary, below. There's an outstanding question regarding the actual birth year of either Jacob or his brother, William. The date of birth carved into William's tombstone at Fountain Green Cemetery is February 18, 1821. Obviously one of the birth dates is in error. In the 1900 Federal Census, Jacob was reported as having been born in September of 1819, but those dates are notoriously unreliable - further evidenced by the entry for William that year: February 1832.
Van Dine also deciphered the year of Mary Callihan's death as 1889. Foote's Fountain Green Almanac of 1940, a usually reliable source, reported that she died in 1888. That year is supported by Jacob's obituary and Mary's obituary, not in our possession. Jacob's obituary stated that he was one of six children. We know that Jacob's father, Thomas Callihan, fathered at least ten children and we believe he was married three times. The statement about six children may be a clue as to which of Thomas' wives was the mother of which children. January 31, 1906 Jacob Callihan was born in Lancaster county, Pa., Sept. 25, 1820, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Maggie Ebert, near Elvaston, Ill., Jan 26, 1906, aged 85 years, four months and one day. He was the second son of Thos. and Eve Callihan. May 15, 1845, he was married to Mary Kath [sic], of Lebanon county, Pa. He was the father of nine children, six of whom are yet living, as follows: Martin and Thomas, now in California; Mrs. Sarah McClure, of Denver, Ill.; Mrs. Maggie Ebert, of Elvaston, Ill.; Mrs. Mary McElvane, Prairie City, Ill.; A. L. Callihan, of Webster. ¶ In 1850 Mr. Callihan with his wife and two children emigrated to the west, landing in Hancock county and settled at Ft. Green. Four years later he bought property and moved to this village, where he remained until the death of his wife, which occurred Dec. 16, 1888, after which he rented his home and took up his abode with his children. He soon became tired of the change, so he decided to sell his property, and make his home with his daughter, Mrs. Ebert, of Elvaston, where he has been tenderly cared for the past seven years. ¶ His father's family was composed of six children, all of whom have preceded him to the better land, but one brother, William, of Webster, who is near 84 years old and in feeble health. Mr. Callihan united with the Congregational church in his youth, but after coming to this village he was a regular attendant at the U. B. church for many years. ¶ "Uncle Jake," as he was familiarly known, had been suffering for some weeks with a complication of diseases which assumed a dropsical nature and caused his death. He was as well as usual and said he would lie down to take a nap, and in about a half hour his daughter went to him, to find he had taken that long sleep which knows no awakening on earth. ¶ The remains were brought here Sunday morning, where the funeral services were held, conducted by Rev. Love, of Ft. Green. Deceased had made preparations for his departure, selecting some favorite hymns to be sung. His requests were granted by his children, who gratified his every wish during his illness, all except the two sons in California having been with him more or less, during that time. His body now sleeps by the side of his loved companion in our cemetery. A good man has gone, another vacant place by the fireside, and yet there stands one more on the golden shore of eternity awaiting the arrival of the remaining loved ones to make the family circle complete around the "Great White Throne." ¶ A number of relatives and friends were in attendance from a distance and all were entertained at the home of A. L. Callihan during their brief stay. Mr. and Mrs. Chas. McElvane, of Prairie City, also Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Ebert, of Elvaston, remained until Monday morning. Chester Callihan accompanied his aunt, Mrs. Maggie Ebert, to her home for a visit, Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Chas Belknap and Mr. and Mrs. Bert Howd, all of Burnside, spent Sunday at the home of Wm. Kleckner. [Copy ends.] Paragraph breaks added for readability, indicated by ¶.
