At the age of 15-16 Robert Michael McBee enlisted into the 21st Georgia Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Company "H" (Dole's Brigade) on July 1, 1861 in Dade County Georgia. According to his military records, while recovering from battlefield injuries, he continued his service as an ambulance driver until his wounds healed and then returned to service. He remained with his regiment throughout the war and on April 9,1865, he surrendered at Appamatox Courthouse in Virgina.
The 21st was one of the first regiments formed in 1861. It lost 76% of the 242 engaged at Second Manassas and about 10% of the 287 at Gettysburg. Only 7 officers and 50 men survived and surrendered in April 1865.
