Hello Cousins,

My name is Mary Martha Hartrick Mazza, Marcy to those who know me well. I was born in Trenton, Wayne County, Michigan and raised for most of my life in Michigan.

My Momma’s family, the Wallaces, Wheelers, Smiths and Balls lived in Kentucky. My Great Grandpas, Great Uncles, my Grandpa and some of my second cousins were all coal miners at one time or another in Harlan County.

My Daddy’s family, the Hartricks and Dobberstines all lived in Michigan. They were of German descent. They were carpenters, firemen, fishermen and hunters. They enjoyed the out of doors and all the great things that Michigan had to offer.

I live in Michigan with my husband Michael and my sons Anthony and Aaron. Oh, I can’t forget my other three babies, Robbie (my Pomeranian), Baby Girl (my Toy Manchester) and Rocky (our cockatiel).

Kentucky holds a very special place in my heart. I lived in Kentucky for almost two years with my grandparents before my grandmother passed away. While living there, I became very attached to many of my great uncles, great aunts and cousins, not to mention my great-grandmother Narcissus Smith Ball. I was truly spoiled by all of them. I lived in Kentucky just long enough to get a taste of that good old southern living and that is something that once you get a taste of, you can never forget.

After I moved back to Michigan to live with my parents in 1969, I became very interested in genealogy. I love to go back to Kentucky and climb the mountains and hills and walk through the old cemeteries, visit places the family lived and worked and reminisce with my Momma about her life in those hills.

I can get lost in my “Family Tree” program for hours and hours at a time and seem to feel those ancestors are hovering around me as I discover facts about their life and times.

Even though I may live in the “Great State of Michigan”, my heart is still in the “Land of Dixie” and in the “Mountains of Kentucky”. Like they say “you can take the girl out of the country but you can’t take the country out of the girl”!
