Descendants of William Hawkins
Generation No. 1
1. William2 Hawkins (John1) was born Bef. 1490 in prob. Plymouth, Devonshire, England, and died 1554. He married Joan Towne Trelawney, daughter of Roger Trelawney. She was born Abt. 1500 in Launceton, Cornwall, England, and died in England.
Notes for William Hawkins:
A branch of the Hawkinses of Nash Court probably settled in Plymouth during the fifteenth century. John Hawkins held lands in the town under the Corporation before 1480, and was dead by or before 1490, when his heirs held them. This was before the Hawkinses were at Tavistock. William Hawkins, son of John Hawkins (who had lived at Tavistock), and Joan, daughter of William Amadas, of Launceton, was born probably at Plymouth towards the end of the fifteenth century. He was an officer in the navy of King Henry VIII. Being one of the principal sea captains in the West of England, he obtained a high and just reputation for his skill and experience, and was held in great esteem and favour by the King. He is thought to be the same Hawkins who in 1513 was master of the "Great Galley," one of the few Royal ships of that time.

Mayor of Plymouth, 1567-8, 1578-9, 1587-8, commanded the "Griffin" in the fight against the Spanish Armada.
Sir John Hawkins erected a monument to the memory of his brother in St. Nicholas Church, Deptford, which was in existence in Thorpe's time (it is now removed), with this inscription: "Sacr~ perpetuaeque memoriae Gulielmi Hawkyns de Plimouth arm igeri; qui verae religionis verus cultor, pauperibus praecipue navicularus inunifleus, rerum nauticarum studiosissimus, longinquas instituit saepe navigationes: arbiter in causis difficilissimis aequissimus, fide, probitate, et prudentia siugulari. Duos duzit uxores, e quarum una 4 ex altera 7 suscepit liberos. Johannes Hawkyns eques auratus, classis regiae quaestor, frater maestissimus posuit. Objit spe certa resurgendi 7 die mensis Octobris anno domini 1589."
The following is a translation:
"To the ever living memory of William Hawkyns of Plymouth esquire; who was a worshipper of the true religion; a munificent benefactor to poor mariners; skilled in navigation; oftentimes undertaking long voyages; a just arbiter in difficult cases; and a man of singular faith, probity, and prudence. He had two wives, four children by one, and seven by the other. John Hawkins, Knight, Treasurer of the Queen's Navy, his brother, most sorrowfully erected this. He died in the sure and certain hope of resurrection, on the 7th day of October, in the year of our Lord 1589."
Did this William Hawkins have a son named Thomas Hawkins that went to York Co., VA and died c 1640?

Notes for Sir John Hawkins:
Kinsman, probably cousin of Sir Francis Drake. Leader of ships against Armada. Many good articles and web sites on this man and his son, Sir Richard Hawkins. Also spelled Hawkyns.
A Trelawney ancestor of Sir John Hawkins had the name Matilda Mynwenyke and was described in the Visitation of Cornwall. The mother of Sir Francis Drake was probably named Mylwaye. Could this be the common name? If so they may be fourth cousins, or more distant.
"Hawkins also spelled HAWKYNS English naval administrator and commander, one of the foremost seamen of 16th-century England and the chief architect of the Elizabethan navy.
"A kinsman of Sir Francis Drake, Hawkins began his career as a merchant in the African trade and soon became the first English slave trader. By carrying slaves from Guinea, in West Africa, to the Spanish West Indies, he provoked conflict with the Spaniards, who did not allow unauthorized foreigners to trade with their colonies. Hawkins' first slave-trading voyage, in 1562-63, on behalf of a syndicate of London merchants, was so profitable that a more prestigious group, including Queen Elizabeth I, provided the money for a second expedition (1564-65). His third voyage, with Drake in 1567-69, however, ended in disaster. After selling the slaves in the Caribbean, Hawkins was forced by needed repairs and lack of water to take refuge at San Juan de Ulua, near Veracruz, Mex. A Spanish fleet attacked him in the harbour, and, of the six ships, only the two commanded by Hawkins and Drake were able to escape. This episode marked the beginning of the long quarrel between England and Spain that eventually led to open war in 1585.
"Hawkins soon avenged himself; by gaining the confidence of Spain's ambassador to England, he learned the details of a conspiracy (the so-called Ridolfi plot of 1571) in which English Roman Catholics, with Spanish assistance, were to depose Queen Elizabeth and install Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots, on the English throne. Hawkins notified his government, and the English plotters involved were arrested.
"In 1577 Hawkins succeeded his father-in-law, Benjamin Gonson, as treasurer of the navy; later (1589) he was to assume the additional duties of controller. His high naval post enabled him to direct the rebuilding of the older galleons and to contribute to the design of faster, more heavily armed ships. It was this new, swift-sailing navy that withstood the Spanish Armada in 1588. Hawkins was third in command during the Armada crisis (during which he was knighted), and afterward he devised the strategy--quite original for that period--of setting up a naval blockade at the Azores to intercept Spanish treasure ships returning from the New World.
"In 1595 Hawkins and Drake sailed with 27 ships to raid the Spanish West Indies. Hawkins died the night before an unsuccessful attack on Puerto Rico."

4. William4 Hawkins (William3, William2, John1) was born Bet. 1565 - 1585 in of Tavistock, and died 1613 in aboard "Thomas", buried Ireland. He married (1) Agnes Edgcombe 01 Sep 1590 in St. Stephens, daughter of Richard Edgcombe and Agnes Durant. He married (2) Mariam Khan Bef. 1594, daughter of Mubarik Khan.
Notes for William Hawkins:
A captain who travelled to India and was married there. He cannot be confused with a William Hawkins who emigrated to Virginia. He had a brother, Charles, who outlived him and who collected a loan from his estate.
Notes for Mariam Khan:
The journey of William Hawkins to Agra, and his residence at the court of Jehanghir, may be looked upon as the opening scene of the history of British India. The Emperor induced the English captain to marry the daughter of Mubarik Khan, a Christian Armenian ; and when Hawkins was dismissed from Agra in November 1611, he took his native wife with him. They got safely on board Sir Henry Middleton's ship in the following January, and proceeded to Bantam, whence they sailed for England in the Thomas, arriving at Saldanha Bay on April 21st, 1613 and here the letter (or report) of Hawkins to the company terminates abruptly. He died on the passage from the Cape, and was buried in Ireland.
Mrs. Hawkins, alone amongst strangers, was left in a very forlorn condition. But she had one diamond worth £2000, and smaller ones worth £4000, so that she had no difficulty in finding another husband. In 1614 she married Gabriel Towerson, who had been in the voyage of Captain Saris and brought home the Hector. In 1617 Captain and Mrs. Towerson went out to India again, and visited Agra; where the lady remained with her relations. Towerson went home, and in 1620 he was appointed Principal Factor at the Moluccas, where he was judicially murdered, after suffering inhuman treatment from the Dutch, on February 27th, 1623. He was the chief victim of the Massacre of Amboyna.

In 1609 February, the English merchant Hawkins, travelling from Surat to Burhanpur, even with an escort of about sixty Pathan horse, was attacked by a troop of out-laws. [ The province of Baglan still maintained its independence. The chief's head quarters were at Jaitapur, near Mulher and he levied tolls on all travellers from Surat to Burhanpur, the road passing through his territory. William Hawkins (1608—1613) reached Burhanpur on 8th February, 1609 and next day saw "Chan Channa (Khan Khanan), the Lord general and Viceroy of Deccan". Hawkins stayed in BurhanDur till 2nd of March 1609 and arrived in Agra on 16th April 1609—Foster, Early Travels in India, 80, 129

Notes for Adm. Sir Richard (Sir) Hawkins:
Sir Richard Hawkins of Slapton
"Hawkins also spelled HAWKYNS, English seaman and adventurer whose Observations in His Voyage Into the South Sea (1622) gives the best extant idea of Elizabethan life at sea and was used by Charles Kingsley for Westward Ho!.
"The only son of the famed seaman Sir John Hawkins by his first marriage, Richard Hawkins in 1582 sailed with his uncle William to the West Indies; in 1585 he commanded a ship on Sir Francis Drake's raid on the Spanish Main and was a ship captain during the Armada campaign (1588).
"In June 1593 he sailed from Plymouth in the "Dainty" with two smaller vessels, which parted company before reaching the Pacific. In February 1594 he sighted what he called Hawkins Maidenland, probably the Falkland Islands, which had been discovered two years previously by John Davis. After burning four ships at Valparaíso, Hawkins continued up the coast until he met six Spanish warships off Callao. He overcame them; but on June 22, when north of Paita, he was wounded and forced to surrender after a fight lasting three days with two more Spanish ships. He was imprisoned at Lima and then from 1597 till 1602 in Spain, at which date his ransom of £3,000 was paid. On his return he was knighted and elected mayor and MP for Plymouth. In 1608, after five years as vice-admiral of Devon, he was arrested and fined for condoning piracy. In 1620 he sailed as second in command of an ineffective expedition against
the Algerine corsairs.
"His Observations in His Voyage Into the South Sea was printed in 1622, having been composed about 1603."

He married Hester Richards 27 Oct 1636 in England, daughter of Edward Richards and Jane Martin. She was born Abt. 1610 in of Dartmouth, England, and died 23 Jul 1660 in Slapton, England.
Notes for John Sidney Hawkins:
He is known to have been at sea in 1629. He lived at Poole in Slapton, which he probably inherited from his mother, Lady Judith, in 1629. He sold the estate at some stage.
He sold the Plymouth estates in 1637-8. John and Hester produced 10 children. John died at Stoke Fleming and was buried in nearby Slapton in 1678.
A number of researchers assert that this John Hawkins, sometimes called John Sidney Hawkins, cannot be the ancestor of the American Hawkins families which include Philemon Hawkins. Some of the church records from Devon indicating why are included with the presumed family of a later family member.

Page 6 of John Henry Hawkins and His Kin by Duane Gage - at DAR Library in Wash. DC
"John Hawkyns (1643-????), son of John and Hester Hawkyns, was the only male in his family who lived long enough to produce a family. court records and church records from this era are scarce and, in many cases, illegible.
We can determine that this particular descendant married Mary Dewe, d/o Edward Dewe of Islip, Oxfordshire, and they had fourteen children born between 1671 and 1698. In 1682 John and Mary Dewe Hawkyns settled at Great Milton, Oxfordshire. The date of death for this John Hawkyns is not known. "It is not likely that the family could afford to provide all fourteen children a higher education. Consequently, some of the younger sons were destined to seek their fortunes on their own. John Hawkyns, a younger son of John and Mary Dewe Hawkyns, born about 1680, emigrated to the colony of Virginia about 1705 and settled in St. Anne's Parish..... In 1715 another Hawkins brother, Philemon (1690-1725) emigrated to America and settled near his kinsman. Philemon was the first of our direct ancestors to reach America. *In her book, Mary Hawkins mentions probate of John’s will, and a listing of his property, which was in his room, in his father’s house. John would only have been 27 years old, and given that he lived in a room in his father’s house, and his sister was the executer of his will, it seems likely that he never married. Question: was the John who married Mary Dewe born 21 Sep 1643? Or is the marriage record all that has been found?
Note: Thomas Edward Hawkins, of England, found where John Hawkins married Agnes Phillips in 1663 at Margate. This would seem more likely than Oxfordshire. It’s closer to Slapton, and there are many Heale names in the parrish register. The problem is, this John had children born after 1670, when John, the son of John esq. Died. It’s the same problem as the John that married Mary Dewe.

"We have definitely traced the Hawkins line back 5 generations ... to a John Hawkins who we think is ... John was born April 12 1687; ours married Anna someone and their first child was born in 1711 so it could well be the same John. We haven't been able to prove it because the records at Stoke Fleming were destroyed." geoff.ledden@virgin.net Geoff Ledden August 2001. The wife and descendants attached here are speculative.

Notes for <Unknown> Hawkins:
A John Hawkins that married Mary Lieux is often shown as the father of Philemon Hawkins. One report lists a brother as Lieu Dolphus Hawkins, and the similarity is striking.
There is no evidence to show that all of these presumed siblings were, in fact, siblings. They are presented here due to a number of descendants sharing the claim of descent from Sir John Hawkins, the proximity of the Spotsylvania families, and the common name "Philemon" which appears in the line of the Chickahominy / Bute / Warren branch of the compiler.
William Hawkins is not listed as a brother of the other immigrant siblings in some accounts, but descendants have similar naming patterns and we in the same vicinity and may be closely related.

p. 36 - Hawkins of Virginia, The Carolinas, and Kentucky - published by Dorothy Ford Wulfeck. "Queries from Genealogy and History Magazine" #7585 15 June 1943. An answer to #7377 which had been sent in by EPO. Hawkins, Howard, Smith, Craig, Taliaferro, Hayden, Long, Long, Simpson, Prichett, McDonald, Randle, Ellis, Casel; England, Va., No. Car., Ga.
"Philemon Hawkins (b. 1695, England) emigrated to America with wife, Eleanor (Howard); to Virginia in the neighborhood of Todd's Bridge, near relatives who had preceded him. (Such is the record of tradition familiar to descendants.) The Reg. Land Office, Richmond, Va., shows Philemon had land granted him in King William Co.: 2 patents in 1719 and 2 in 1725 in that part which is now King and Queen Co. Todd's Bridge was in King and Queen over the Matapony River. The probabilities are that John Hawkins of King William was the relative who had preceded the immigrant in 1714. Philemon d. 1725, and ca 1735, his widow and their children, Philemon, John and Anna, moved to No. Car. where many of their desc. now live."
"Philemon Hawkins emigrated to the colonies along with five brothers...Nicholas, Joseph, John, Lieu Dolphus and another whose name is unknown"

Notes for Anne Eleanor Howard:
Anne Eleanor Howard was the daughter of Capt. Howard of Plymouth, England. The family of Howard in England is a prominent one, including Sir Thomas Howard, who commanded the Armada and who recommended that Philemon Hawkins' ancestor, Sir John Hawkins, get knighted after that victory. His descendants included two of the wives of Henry VIII of England, and his family is in my file, though no link has been established to Anne Eleanor. I am related to him as a cousin on another line. The possible naval family connection has me interested in pursuing this, though!
She moved from Virginia to North Carolina after the death of her husband, and married an (unknown) Irishman. Anyone who can identify him, please let me know!!!

He is mentioned as recently deceased, in Deed Book D, p. 17, Spotsylvania County, November 16th, 1742, where it appears that his wife's name was Mary.

Deposition of Nathan Hawkins, Madison Co., KY Deed Book A, p. 82.
Deposition of Nathan Hawkins, aged 74, taken before George Adams and Joseph Kennedy, Justices of the Peace; was present about thirty-one or thirty-two years ago in Spotsylvania County, Virginia when John Hawkins married Elizabeth Ellis, daughter of William Ellis, of Spotsylvania. William told John that for his marrying his daughter, he would buy and give him (John) two good negroes and he should have equal share with his other children at his death ; after they were married two negro girls came to the door and Mr. Ellis informed John he might have his choice. Mrs. Ellis answered No, she would not part with either of the girls; she intended one for a milkmaid and the other for a washmaid, but that he might have Millie, a young gir. John, after some conversation, said it was very little odd which of the girls he had; although she was the smallest she might soon grow up. Upon which Mr. Ellis gave John Hawkins the girl, and about four days after Millie was moved to John Hawkins' and there remained until after the decease of said Hawkins. In the administration of his estate Millie was appraised in said estate and the relict had her thirds allotted to her; that her father, Mr. Ellis, wished Millie not to be included in the appraisal but the widow excepted against it and said Millie was John Hawkins' and should be in the appraisal and his children should not be wronged, and her father agreed to it.
Mr. Ellis was appointed Guardian and hired Millie with the other negroes for the benefit of the orphans. Some time after the widow married Robert Collins who brought suit against heirs of said Hawkins for siad Millie but how it came out of the Court this deponent knoweth not. The matter was submitted to arbitration of Joseph Brook, Edward Hardin and Thomas Colson, Justices of the Peace for Spotsylvania County, and the award was in favor of the orphans; but depondent further sayeth, Robert Collins said in his hearing he would give his bond to stand to the award, and further sayeth not. Notes for John Hawkins:
John Hawkins may have been the son of Joseph Hawkins b c 1695 Spotsylvania Co., VA, will dated 30 Mar 1769 and his wife Jane.
One story says "John Hawkins was born in England about 1680. In 1743 he emigrated to America with his sisters, Jane, Mildred, Agnes and Elizabeth, and Thomas Langford and family. They settled on Little River in Hanover County, about 40 miles northwest of Richmond." It seems unlikely he was born as early as 1680, but if an immigration record exists, he is likely linked to the wrong parents.

Notes for Delia Hawkins:
Delia has a sister, Frances, who more likely is called "Fanny." The book "Southern Kith and Kin" indicates that Leonard married Fannie Hawkins, daughter of Philemon Hawkins. As that Frances married in 1772, and this one probably died before the marriage to Susannah Martin Goodloe (who MAY be descended from Zachariah Martin) in 1766, the book may be wrong.
Delia died without any children.
17 Nov 1760 was listed as a wedding date - I do not recall where I found it, but based on Delia's probable birth date, this is not possible.
Notes for Leonard Henley Bullock:
Leonard Bullock later married Susannah (Martin) Goodloe.
He was involved in, and mentioned in, the Treaty of Sycamore Shoals which created the (short-lived) colony of Transylvania.
